Tom Cruise on Postpartum depression

Can you believe the comments Tom Cruise made on the Today show about Brooke Sheilds and her PPD, and her use of medication to treat it?!:angryfire What the heck does he know about it? I say if a woman is suicidal and visualizing her infant hitting a wall, she needs medication and counseling. I think it was very irresponsible for him to go on national television and criticize women who use medication to help them out in such a difficult time in their lives. I've never experienced PPD, only the regular "Baby Blues" and I must say during that time I wasn't able to control my emotions (esp the tears:crying2: ) and i've never been that way before. Shame on Tom...... and Kudos to Brooke for getting help.

what really sucks the most about all this, is I wanted to go see "War of the Worlds".

but now I can't because he's such a dangerous and offensive lunatic, and I promised myself to never give him another dollar.

:o

Funny beacuse I said the same thing to myself a few days ago when I wanted to go see "War of the Worlds".

I know some scientologists & think the "religion" is nuts. That aside, Tom Cruise revealed himself to be a fool. I didn't think he was a very interesting actor in the first place, but now I have even more of a reason to avoid his movies.

TOTALLY agree! By the way, would anyone agree that Tom's latest behavior is awfully reminiscent of the manic phase of Bipolar disorder?

YES! I thought the same thing.

I also agree that Tom seems manic, poor Katie I hope she figures out what a weirdo he truly is before it is to late!! The thing that pi*#ed me off the most is that he kept saying that antidepressants where antipsychotics. Well i am on a antidepressant and have never been psychotic and those who have to be around me on a regular basis are glad that I take my 50 of zoloft everyday!! I guess when tom has to start his lithium for his bipolar disorder he will be more versed it what meds are for what!!!.

They say "Ignorance is Bliss" and Tom is definately ignorant! Its almost humerous that a man who will never experience PPD is speaking out on it. Should he and Katie actually have a child, I hope she doesn't suffer from PPD as he would probably forbid proper treatment. On the bright side maybe that would open his eyes to the reality of the situation and how treatment is a must. I wonder if Tom remembers Andrea Yates? She is a prime example of untreated PPD. If only she had seeked treatment those six precious children would still be alive.

I say shame on Tom as well and agree that he is only a mediocre actor and should stick to his profession. I will not contribute to his career by seeing any of his movies. Katie beware, Nicole never saw a divorce coming and apparently that was related to his scientology religion as well. He's a weird, weird man.

well, thats a great attitude, but really should only be applied to legitimate religions like Xianity, Buddhism, Islam, Wicca, various indigenous tribal religions, etc.

I'm sorry, but you dont have to give respect to cults.

scientology is truly a cult. actually, it's Organized Crime Masquerading as Religion. it's not just a ridiculous scam, but it's destructive and dangerous.

since their Mad Messiah (the paranoid-schizophrenic sci-fi hack L. Ron Hubbard) had a pathological aversion to psychiatry, the hatred of all psychiatric medicine is a key component of their beliefs.

people have become seriously ill and even died following their advice. for instance, they run a bunch of drug/alcohol treatment centers under the banner "Narconon".

these Narconon centers are really just fronts to (a) recruit new cult members and (b) launder money to keep scientology a non-profit IRS 501(b) status.

of course they adhere to all of scientology's principles. which mean people detoxing from chronic addictions to alcohol, barbituates, heroin, etc... are not given any medication, but are instead pumped full of Niacin and other vitamins. and when they go into shock and start having seizures, the Narconon-Scientologists then dump their victims off at the front door of the local ER.

of course, no insurance provider will ever cover treatment at a Narconon facility... and they arent cheap either.

define "cult". Be really careful. Cause you could very easily define many "mainstream" religions like Christianity of many denominations as cults. It's all about perspective and what people do and don't accept as religion in their lives.

I have no desire to go to sites that paint religions as "crackpots.com" thank you. Try this one instead to truly challenge yourself, open your mind, and possibly learn something: http://www.religioustolerance.org

It gives us a more indepth look at the varying religions of the world. No---- it's not a perfectly definitive site, but it does give you a more objective view point of many of the world's religious systems and places to go for ACCURATE research.

Be careful what you call a "cult". To some, Catholicism could be considered such, based on THEIR viewpoints.

Example: Jehovahs Witnesses who allow no blood products. How "crazy" is it to disallow a lifesaving blood or platelet transfusion, even auto-transfusion. Why they "must" be a "cult" right?

Like I said, be careful what you are saying here.

Andrea Yates is a perfect example of how "clueless" men are to all of this in general. Her husband had to know that she was having (and had had) troubles with depression. Yet he apparently ignored this.

Tom Cruise is a jerk in my opinion anyway. I'm sure his latest tyrade here on PPD hasn't helped him much. Good thing, too.

Tom is ignorent.

What kind of dim-wit comes out with opions that are so blatantly judgmental of someone elses personal life?

not to mention that he has just painted a very negative picture of scientologests for the whole country.

And the worst part of it is that he comes out agianst a women experancing a terrible condition that so many women have. One of the biggest problems with PP depression is that it is so offten ignored or treated as not as not that big a deal becuase of people like Mr. Cruse.

And who are Tom Cruses biggest fans? I don't hear many locker room converstaions about Tom Cruse but I do hear women talking about him all the time. Tom has really screwed up here and it's going to hurt his career.

.

we all would do well to ask ourselves this one question, I think.

I find it interesting that the only time you hear of a celebrity giving an interview is when they are promoting their movies. It will be a tragedy if a woman does not seek treatment because of Mr. Cruise's opinion. I hate to say it but there are people who take what these celebrities say as gospel.

Somehow I think that Mr. Tom is going thru some sort of crisis of his own. His behavior in the past months have clearly said it. Mania does come to mind, that and perhaps the need to boost his name both in the entertanment field and in his personal life. He has achieved what he has set out to do, I think. He is now a common topic of conversation, his pictures with his new (and misillusioned)fiance are everywhere, and scientology is back on the map. Not too bad for a few months work and a bounce on Oprah's couch.

I personally did not see his hijinks on Oprah or his interview with Matt Lauer. I am glad I didn't really. I have lived with depression for years now, and without the help of a phenomenal therapist AND medication, I truly don't know where I would be. Along with this help, I trusted the Lord to bring me thru and point me to where I needed to be. Chemical imbalances anywhere in the body can be devastating. I just hope that women do not fall for the toothy grin of this guy, and his proclaimations, and decide not to seek help if needed. It is already an issue that is difficult to bring forward....

Heavy sigh. This is all the time I am going to give to THE TOM. He doesn't need anymore hype.

I think the whole subject comes down to everyone has to take care of themselves how they see fit. No matter how many medical books, or case studies we have, no doctor is going to tell you that *every* person can be fit into a model. Meaning, everyone is different. Maybe *if* Tom was a woman, he would not need Paxil to overcome PPD... *BUT* maybe if he was a woman experiencing PPD, he would need more than that.

No one person can tell another that they do or do not need something. I mean, this is preached to us all the way through our careers about pain medicine. We are not the ones to judge if someone is in pain, we must take the patient's perception for the truth and administer pain med as Dr ordered.

I think the entire world would be a lot better off if everyone would just MTOB (Mind Their Own Business) and take care of themselves...Then everyone would be taken care of...

:p
