Told to go home..

Company I work for here in Phoenix has decided we will wear Scrub tops/bottoms in colors they have chosen. No uniform allowance, not paid for by them.

I showed up today with their color tops, but wore my black pants ..they stretch when I bend or have to kneel down, unlike scrubs, which I have torn doing the same ..yes .. right across the back of my butt no less .. I swore then I'd never wear that cheap fabric for pants again.. LOL.

Anyway, Nurse Supervisor met me in hallway, told me to go home.

Had just gotten report and counted for shift change .. I was in the process of taking my badge off and handing it to her when I stopped myself.

Wow.

Just wouldn't do to quit right on the spot.

Went home, sent a resume out, .. LOL

My wife found a pair of scrub pants I had that were the correct color that I havent worn since way back then.

I am still debating whether I should go back in tomorrow or just call 'em and tell them where to send my check.

Comes down to the last straw .. no raise, not even a cost of living bump for the year and a half I have been there.. high patient load with more and more patients that need a lockdown Alzheimer's unit, not just me and one aid.. and now they want me to lay out a few hundred dollars for an arbitrary decision on their part that just doesn't make sense for me at all.

-shrug-

Sorry .. had to vent.

Not like I have to do a single thing they want, I will go work somewhere else for more pay that is closer. Throw me into that briar patch!

Petty, yes, but sometimes things are symbolic of bigger issues. . .

I wouldn't quit now. I'd line up another job then quit about 2 weeks before Thanksgiving holidays start.

Now THAT is evil!hehe!

You know, I'm thinking back to every job I ever quit, and it usually seemed to be over something petty, but it was always a petty something that was the final straw in a long line of petty somethings. After a while, a lot of petty becomes something big!

I think you should sleep on it. Quitting your job is a big decision. Is it really worth it? I wish it were so easy to just quit whenever we felt wronged, just to make a point but sometimes you don't have that option. A job is a job. Sometimes you gotta put up with the BS, to a certain extent anyway.

The hospital I worked at made us do that, shell out money for scrubs in a color I didn't like. I figured it was all part of the annoyance of working at a hospital and I'd just have to put up with it.

Grin....I don't work there any more.

BUT!!! I never ever ever recommend quitting without another job lined up. The economy isn't the hottest ever right now. You probably can find another job quickly, but if you don't....those bills just keep coming in anyway.

To quit a job because of the uniform they wanted you to wear. There must be a million people out there wearing uniforms for thier job. I will let you make your own list, and you should be able to think of a hundred or more......I can. Unless it is too revealing or too uncomfortable to wear? Scrubs...... they are so close to P.J's that they can never be uncomfortable, and can be found in any size.

Most of the time when we complain about something like that in a job..it as usually about something more. So...just leave the job and find one more suited to you!

i agree with the posts about giving it some thought and looking over the job market, your distance from home to job, what scrubs you will have to wear at a new place, what shifts you will be required to work as new employee

if your decison is to leave, do give notice and request an exit interview

show class even if they don't

You know what? Look at the bright side....

1. You have a job

2. You can deduct the cost of the new uniforms on your tax returns

Try to be positive!

Also, I'm curious about the scrubs you mentioned that split and tore...were they purchased or hand made? Maybe you should try a larger size that will allow for bending and kneeling without so much tension in the fabric?

Good luck!!

I'm not going to say what I originally thought...

But, they do make scrub pants in all types of fabrics. I have never seen any that have torn, especially if they are the appropriate size.

Did they give you any notice about this change in policy? Where I work we were given about 3 or 4 months notice before the change went into effect.

So long as he look professional, who care's! I know a nurse who ALWAYS wears dockers with a scrub top, he looks fine.

I worked with another nurse who wore dockers, a button up shirt and a tie, in the ER no less, always looked presentable, and when people called him "doctor" he would politely remind them he was an RN.

Management needs to stop sweating the small stuff. They really don't HAVE to control "everything". Sad.

Let me guess. . . the manager who sent the OP home over the silly uniform issue didn't volunteer to work the floor when she became short-staffed by 1 nurse that day.

I don't know of one facillity that hasn't done similar at one time or another. The one I worked at required me to get a doctor's order for me to wear a certain type of shoe due to the dress code at the time. I am assuming the scrubs are not the main concern but an accumulation of a lot of small things that was just the last straw. I wish you luck and agree with the rest...don't burn your bridges yet give notice if you feel you can do better at another place.

But its also a petty reason to quite a job, imo.

I don't think so. Any workplace that treats its staff like that over the color of one's scrub pants is a place that won't hesitate to throw you to the wolves if something seriouis happens.

Besides, all too many facilities treat nursing staff like recalcitrant children. That kind of treatment needs to STOP.

And sometimes, when enough BS has been shovelled on you, you have to decide whether you're going to keep laying down and take it. I'd wager that this gentleman has manfully swallowed a great number of other unpleasant encounters with the leadership team at his facility.
