To those nurses planning to work in US without agency

Published

Hi there!

Is there anyone in this forum like me who is planning to work in US without any employment agency?

I don't have any employment agency taking care of my application in US right now. I am just lucky to have a distant relative who referred me to work in NJ as a direct hire.

It has been very difficult for me because I have to shell out a good sum of money from my own savings. I paid the attorney general for the visa processing and all the necessary exams and requirements needed.

Sometimes, I just feel that I am left alone in the dark specially the previous months because of the retrogression issue. I just hope my application is still on the process.

Its a good thing that through this forum, I can say all that I want and express how I feel as a struggling nurse here in the Philippines . All I want is a good future for my husband and 1 year old baby boy.

I just discovered last week that my aunt is one of those nurses who do direct hospital hiring.... But the problem is getting a visa.... gee! I really hope all of us could pass the NLE so that we can move on with our plans...

i plan to go through direct hire too but i haven't passed my NCLEX yet.

would it be okay to look for an employer once i have passed my NCLEX or do i have to receive my VSC first? is it one of the requirements when looking for an employer?

hit potskipottie.... i too am on the same boat. im working on my BON application to NM and intend to take IELTS after then apply for VS. from what i heard, the VS is not a requirement before you can look for prospective employers. some say that the VS is the last in the process, but i think getting the VS after passing the NCLEX and IELTS is better.

believe me joining an agency doesnt protect you from shelling out money, nor does it make you feel that you are not alone, ask some of the agency signed nurses on here that have had hidden charges and no information from their agency for weeks!!!

hi! i just received my formal offering letter from a nursing home based in NY.

it's a direct hire...

since it's just a letter, it just mentioned the salary and benefits i will be receiving.a 3 yr contract

with direct hire, who ususally pays for the lawyer and visa's fee?i'm done with CG, IELTS,NCLEX, and visa screen. i paid for all the expenses with the help of a relative.

do you we add the basic salary from the additional shift differential? i really don't know what to do whether to sign the letter or not.

Direct hire is better than agency. However, due to the retrogression, facilities or hospitals are shying away from hiring foreign nurses because it is a long wait for them. My personal experience was that I was interviewed by the hospital and was able to pass it. After learning that if they petition me, it will take years, they backed-out.

Most HRs think that using agency will speed up the process and that's why some will refer you to their recruiters. However, be careful, the recruiters will let you sign a contract that is one-sided in favor of them.

Using Agencies (Registries) is another tricky matter. Some will really exploit nurses. They have hidden charges that you don't know and can't escape once you start working for them. I have friend who received a paycheck ( - 200$). Yes, it's negative. Negative two hundred dollars. The next month she received 35$ paycheck. Not enough to survive another month.

hi. i'm hoping to get hired directly by employer, too. i also applied through NM BON, took IELTS last month and passed.

Just to clear up some confusion

Visa screen certificate (vsc) is not a requirement for hospitals/employers it is a requirement for immigration. Therefore not essential to have when looking for an employer. It is valid for 5 years once issued so makes sense to get it sorted once you have completed NCLEX/CGFNS exam, english exam and meet other requirements and then everything is sorted ready for when things move forward with visa application.

I'm assuming if you are going the direct-hire route that it is best to wait until you have passed NCLEX before applying?

yes. that is what employers look for when you're applying.

Employers would like to see the license as well, not only passing NCLEX. If you do not have SSN and you've taken exam for Ca., then you would have difficulty getting a direct hire employer.

correct me if i'm wrong but a license from CA can only be acquired if i'm already in the States, right? i don't think they give SSNs to RNs who are still here in PI.

so once we have found an employer, the NCLEX, IELTS, and other immigration requirements should be enough to start the petition process. is this correct?

You are correct. However, because there are too many nurses now who already passed NCLEX, by law of supply and demand, Ca. Hospitals and Facilities are now demanding to see the license. Don't get me wrong. I was in that situation two months ago. You are lucky if you talk to the Director of Nursing who also has knowledge of immigration.

During the interview, most DON will ask if you have a license. Most of them has no knowledge of the immigration process and didn't know that it's like chicken and egg question if they require you to get a license before they petition you. I was explaining that I need to be petitioned first (to get SSN) before I get the license.

The best answer would be if they ask you if you have a license is to say "I just passed NCLEX-RN and once I submitted SSN, it will be on its way".

By the way, I was talking about direct hire employer. For agencies, they know everything.
