To Filipino Nurses in NEW ZEALAND? Have questions please..

Good day!

I am considering trying my luck as a nurse in New Zealand.

Can anyone here help me and tell me what to expect in the 2-3months competency assessment? Is it really like attending formal school where you have lectures, exams, reports? Anyone ever failed that??

How long does it take to get a working visa after registering with NCNZ, provided of course one passed the assessment? How long does it take to get permanent residency?

How do I find a good consulting agency that can help me with the processing? Or dont I need one anymore?

I also would appreciate it if Filipino Nurses can share their experiences in NZ. Was the transition hard? How do you like the weather?

Any practical tips about starting my application to work as a nurse there besides looking at the NCNZ website?

Try to inquire in Timaru Hospital. I had my 6 wks CAP in that hospital. I only paid NZD750 for the whole course and they offer the CAP for free if you will sign an employment contract for 6 months. That price was 2 yrs ago. I think they are still the cheapest:up: and I had a good clinical exposure.:bow:

This is a very useful information. Does Timaru Hospital require you to have a hospital experience here in PI before you could have your CAP with them? Is there any other qualification that we need to know. thanks much.

Hi everyone!

I just finished all 32 pages of this thread! whew!! But i still have a few questions though which i think was not asked in the previous post.

But first here's my story:

-- i'm a 2007 graduate and board passer

-- i also passed the NCLEX and IELTS (sadly, my IELTS is past its expiration date and i think i need a retake. :p)

-- i have a one year hospital experience July 2007 - 2008.

-- i haven't started applying for NZ yet but i will once i get equip with the need-to-knows. :yeah:

And here's my questions:

-- NCNZ and CAP schools - i understand that both NCNZ and CAP schools require different length of experience but nobody really expounded on whether it's a must to have a CURRENT experience. The last time i was employed as a nurse was july 2008 - thats a 2 yr working gap already. Can somebody please expound specifically on CAP schools ( since i could just ask NCNZ directly... heheh)

-- Is there a website that lists all CAP schools in NZ? I already jot down some that were already mentioned in the previous post but im afraid i need more options on this.

-- It was mentioned that it may take around 2-3 mos to process the whole thing at 6 mos max but that was posted at 2007. Do you guys have the current info regarding the processing time?

I do agree that several agencies are most likely after your money so it is better to be aware of whats happening. Although i have nothing against recruitment agencies i think it is better to be fully equip ( knowing the steps, requirements, etc) so you could bombard them with questions in case your not satisfied with what they are doing with your money. :yeah: You're giving them YOUR MONEY so its good to know what are they doing with it. Taking time for research is a very good investment. To everyone who encourage everybody else to apply on their own: KUDOS!

hey i have known an a consultancy firm who give me an estimated 420k inclusive of everything. from the program, the medical exams, the housing, foods and airfare. well, the housing and food though are good for at least the length of time of the program.

the problem is they don;t provide you with the employer right after the training program.

Is the payment okay? they are also quite vocal on the assistance fee which is 55k from the 420k.

is it easy to apply as a nurse in NZ if you are a free lancer?

i am not really sure on this one, maybe they will consider past experience or maybe they won't. it's a case to case basis so you better contact the NCNZ on this one.

AFAIK, the processing time for NCNZ registration varies. some get approved as early as 1 month, most usually are at 4 months, and there are also some who max it out with a 9-month long wait.

Agencies just get you there in nz by acting as mediums in the transaction between you and the Nursing Council of New Zealand (they receive the letters from NCNZ and relay them to you, you provide them with your documents and they send them out, they follow-up your application status via email... things which you can do all BY YOURSELF).

Also, agencies don't provide you with employers unless they have institutions in nz wherein they are affiliated with, which are mostly rest homes that offer sponsorship for CAP in exchange for working with them for a certain number of years. But that is IF you need sponsorship. If not, then the agency will give you free reign over which hospitals you wish to work at. But still, is this worth the 55k?

When you process the application by yourself, you get to have full control of your communication between the NCNZ, you get to know when and what time and who received your docs, who is assessing them, how far they have gone in doing so, what docs you lack if applicable, you communicate with your case manager and he/she with you.. which is what should be. So save your 55k for your flight to nz or for extra pocket money or whatever. It's a complete waste to hand over that much to people who do things for you that you yourself are completely capable of. As what you called it, I'm a "freelancer" too. I should know how easy it is.

Just my two cents...that maybe able to save your 55 thou. ;)

Any new applications for registration from overseas applicants that are received fall into this category. It is anticipated that any amendments to the qualifications will come into force at the end of September 2010 at which time the Council will resume accepting new applications.:confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:

I'm also confuse about this info. so for now, the council is not accepting overseas application but when will they be accepting again? Is it at the end of SEPT that they will be open for overseas application again?

Yeah, by the end of September (or hopefully earlier than that) they will be accepting applicants again. But of course they will then be following the amendments on their requirements for international nurse applicants.

The million-dollar question here is: what changes have they made? But whatever that may be, let us hope it can be readily achieved or a lot of eager and waiting applicants will be set back and delayed. tsk tsk. :down:
