TN help/advice for canadian

I've passed the NCLEX, have the Visascreen, NY license was issued in January (after completing the CVS) and now have an offer of a wonderful job in NY. Start date is April 15th and I plan to leave Canada on April 11th. Am meeting with an immigration lawyer on Friday for assistance with the letter of employment. For any of you who have been through this process, any advice? I live in BC and have found crossing the border an intimidating and potentially lengthy process. I'm thinking of flying from Vancouver as they have been better than at land crossings. Just trying to arm myself with as much info as possible !

Thanks for your help

I'm not sure what your question is exactly.

Do you have a job offer in the States?

Yes, I start work in NY city on April 15th. I'm looking for any advice in preparing for the border interview questions, issuing of the TN status, tips regarding the employment letter.

Thanks.

All that is required for a TN visa is employer letter, visa screen certificate as well as appropriate NAFTA forms. You do not need a license and one can easily be issued once you are in the US with a valid work/immigrant visa and have a SSN (that can be applied for once in the US with your TN visa)

I was issued my TN status yesterday. It seems like there was nothing easy about this process. If you are not educated in the US some states require further credential verification by CGFNS. In NY, where I will be working, they required CVS before they issued a NY nursing license. I did not need a SSN. I found out when applying for work that prospective employers would not look at me until I had a current license to work in that state. Once I did I found employment quite quickly. I also spent over 4 hours at the border, numerous questions and waiting. They thoroughly checked my documents, employer's website and had me write out a list of job duties with percentages of time spent on each. At the end I was told they could see I had done all the right things but there are many people that don't come prepared. I was also told that you need to come to the border ready to work the next day so, to me, that means having your US license in place as well as your other documents. Feel free to ask me other questions, I have been working on this for a long time !

I'd like to share my experience here. I was trained in Asia, and passed NCLEX(California) and IELTS. Being a Canadian citizen, I was able to CA last year to find an employer and got the offer letter. I went to border by land to appy for TN but was refused due to it's too early. The office would give the TN as soon as you enter US. I flew from YVR and got the TN right away. I was sitting outside, and waited for the officers checked all documents for a while. Finally, I got it without any questions and paid off the $$(forgot). While I entered US, I provided this proof to my hospital as well as applied for SSN in the meantime. When everything came in handy( license....), my employer was able to do paperwork and physical exam. It took 1 month to go through everything. My offer was 1 year contract but I could just work 11 months. I think I was lucky to got hired and earned this experience. The airport's officers are nice too. I hope my experience would be helpful.

THIS IS A SAMPLE OF THE ONE I GET FROM THE HCA FACILITY IN USA. IT IS FROM THE USA EMBASSY IN MEXICO , BUT IT STILL APPLY TO CANADIANS

GOOD LUCK.

I HAVE BEEN ON THIS VISA FOR MANY YEARS NOW WITH NO PROBLEMS GOING BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN MEXICO AND CANADA AT LEAST EVERY OTHER MONTH.

AND YOU ACTUALLY DO NOT NEED A LAWYER TO WRITE THE LETTER IT IS HUMAN RESOURCES WHO DOES IT. !

Thanks for posting this sample letter! This very helpful. I am confused about this Visa Screen Certificate. I'm a Canadian Citizen and I currently live in Texas and just graduated w/ my nursing degree here in the US and getting ready to take NCLEX. I have OPT for now but will need to switch to a TN after OPT expires. Will I still need the Visa Screen certificate?

Thanks :)
