  1. Hello! I just received my Washington Temporary license!! It was issued on May 6th. I applied about 3-4 weeks ago. Received my finger print cards around April 30th. Then they sent off my temporary license on May 6th. I would say about 3 weeks to get your temp license. Good luck!!!
  2. I had a phone interview for an L&D job. Hoping to hear if I get the next interview. Fingers crossed!! Just received all my info to start the CA license process but from reading the other posts, it seems rather daunting....
  3. Hello, I'm from Houston too! I have an initial phone interview this week. Then I guess I will see what the next step will be. I have been contacted by recruiters for travel and permanent positions. The one I will be interviewing for is permanent. Never been to Seattle but been to Vancouver, BC. So beautiful out there!! Love it!! Have you applied for any positions? What is your specialty?

I can relate! Before going to nursing school, I always worked with moms/babies. I was a doula, midwifery apprentice, taught childbirth classes and was a clinical assistant on an ante/pp floor. I always thought I would do L&D. I got my 1st Job right out of school in L&D. I did it for 2 yrs. the first few months were really tough. I cried many times. My 1st 2 preceptors were awful. My last one was great. I learned a lot and began to feel more comfortable. I still felt like it wasn't quite the right fit for me. I transferred to a much bigger hospital where the acuity level was much higher. That also raised my anxiety. After 2 yrs, I decided that the Antepartum unit was a better fit for me. I have been doing only Ante for the last 3 yrs. We also get a lot of higher acuity PP on our unit. Sometimes if the census is lower, they try to float us to L&D. Almost all the antepartum nurse I worked with have L&D experience. That being said, none of us ever want to float over to L&D. Some of the nurses I have worked with have a few years in L&D, some only a few weeks and they knew it was not the right fit. I wish you luck with your decision. You might want to stick it out a little longer, however if you truly know in your heart it's not the right fit, then it might be time to talk to your preceptor and find an area of nursing that you enjoy! I understand that feeling of being stressed going to work and not truly enjoying your job! You worked so hard to become a nurse, you want to be on an unit that you love and feel good about the job you are doing!
  5. Hello!! I was just wondering if there any Antepartum travelers out there? I see a bunch of L&D jobs out there but not a lot when it comes to Antepartum. I have 5 yrs experience. 2 yrs L&D, however we floated to Antepartum, did our own recoveries if our patients had a C/S, sometimes floated to Postpartum or Nursery to transition babies if the census was low. The last 3 yrs I have done strictly Antepartum, we do get a lot of higher acuity postpartum patients as well. Patients on Magnesium for PIH or pp patients that experience a PPH also stay on our unit. I'm interested in doing travel nurses and talked to a few different companies. I let them know that my most recent has been Ante/Post and not L&D. Could I still do Labor? Yes. That being said I would feel somewhat out of my comfort zone. All the stuff I have read about traveling is that you have to hit the ground running. After reading that I would definitely not have a problem as an Antepartum or Postpartum nurse, L&D not so much. I would love to hear from others that have accepted travel assignment as an Antepartum nurse. Thanks!!
  6. Ok. Thanks! Since my OPT is good for a year when should I apply for the Visa Screen Certificate?
  7. Thanks for posting this sample letter! This very helpful. I am confused about this Visa Screen Certificate. I'm a Canadian Citizen and I currently live in Texas and just graduated w/ my nursing degree here in the US and getting ready to take NCLEX. I have OPT for now but will need to switch to a TN after OPT expires. Will I still need the Visa Screen certificate? Thanks :)
  8. Hello :) I just had my graduation ceremony from Nursing school yesterday :) Yay! I currently live in Texas and have for the last 9 years. Born and lived in Canada for 27 years! Moved to Texas 2001. I did all my schooling here and getting ready to take NCLEX soon :) I have OPT work authorization which is good for a year. Have a job offer and I am scheduled to start in July. I was wondering if anyone else here did their schooling in the US and became licensed here and how they went about the Visa situation? I have work authorization for a year but then will have to switch to a TN visa. Has anybody had that experience of already living in the US and applying for a TN. I know I will have to leave and reenter the US. What is the process like? Do I wait for my authorization to expire and then leave to obtain my TN? I know another Canadian nurse where I did my clinicals and she said she crosses over to Mexico to apply for TN and comes right back over. She said she just shows a letter from her employer, passport and nursing license and pays $50 and that's about it. She has done this every year for about 15-16 years. The way she described it seems rather easy. I wonder if is has become more complicated? I would love to hear from other Canadians that work in the US on TN visas. If I have already been in the US and did my schooling here, will I still need a Visa Screening certificate? I remember when I was on F-1 status, my school had to submit some type of certificate, I wonder if it is the same thing? Thanks :)
