Those Who Know Everything!

Isn't there a know-it-all in every class? In mine, it's a chicky-boo who failed last year. She acts like the instructors are looking to her for validation for everything they say. My thinking is hey - you obviously don't know it all or you would have advanced, shut the hello up! ...ok vent over...

I wonder how many of us who participate in class are considered "know it alls". My daughter is in her prereqs in LPN school. She's terribly conscious about appearing smart and won't raise her hand or participate. Neither will anyone else in the class. The result is a class that has no give and take or critical thinking discussions. I think it's a shame. I don't advocate strutting like a peacock. But dumbing down and cheating yourself out of a good experience doesn't make sense either, especially if you're the type of learner that processes through discussion. I like validation that what I'm thinking is right... or wrong, so I'm pretty vocal. I really don't care what everyone else thinks because I'm learning which, if I understand correctly, is the objective. I only wish others would get over themselves and participate too, but each to his own way.

Sometimes things aren't what they appear to be.

I've got no problem with people who know the answer or have a good analogy to add sharing with the class. I am usually at the top of my classes as well also; sometimes the teacher will look at me when no one else answers. What's chappin' my hide is this gal who obviously flunked out first semester last year (hence her repetition) acting like we're somehow beneath her.

Just ask my wife, she will tell you exactly how much I know. :rotfl:

Have fun...dave

I'm not sure why you would be afraid of someone who is a CNA & a CMA.

.

I think you may have read too quickly through the post and didn't catch it.

The poster that thinks the "instructor needs to watch out for the CNA/CMA", was referring to a previous post about the CNA/CMA who thinks that "a CMA can do everything an RN can do. (except hang blood)."

How about the person that asks the instructor what's going to be on the exam? I mean...exactly what's going to be on the exam?

Yeah, like she's gonna tell you.

I don't think anyone's worried about "appearing smart" smart in class...we just realize that we're paying the lady at the front of the room to teach us. You're not dumbing it down when you don't interrupt her lesson, you're letting her do her job. If everyone talked like the ONE person, the prof wouldn't get to lecture.

Discussion is for study group and validation should be done by the parking attendant.

oh my I have one in my class, she's a Lpn who is going for her RN. I am sure she does know a lot since she is an Lpn but, she even talks over the teachers. Everyone rolls their eyes when she starts. Everyone else knows the answers too but she acts like she's the only one. Thank God she'll be with the senior student now because I couldn't take it for 2 years.

Yeah, so last night was night #1 of A & P 1, and the know-it-all-that-hapened-to-me-too-my-daughter's-brain-injured-and-I-know-more-than-her-docs just about drove the instructor crazy. Let me just say that I'm so very thankful the nursing program requires drug testing, and my suspicions were confirmed during the break as she shared with 5 students she didn't know about her two felonies for possession of cocaine. Good luck getting in, princess.

wow. youd think someone that smart would know what cocaine does to your brain...and to your record for that matter!! lol.

good point! ..Those who particpate are definetly different than those who try to run the class themselves. I always like hearing my classmates thoughts, the ones that bother me are those who choose to express themsevles in a way that it seems demeaning to the rest of the class...those who talk over the teacher, interrupt, think they know everything...in fact i'm afraid of those who think they know everything...those are the students who think they have nothing more to learn...i pray i dont have one of them for my nurse any time soon.

One of my profs in my leadership class made such a great point the other day and I keep thinking about it...she said, "the more you know the more you realize you dont know" its sooo true...so for all those who think they know it all...well they prob. in all actuality know very little.

RNKittyKat-Tell you daughter that her fellow students will appreciate her thoughts! Your educational experience is what you make it....:) wish her luck for me!

Who ever said that there are no dumb questions obviously never went to nursing school... :)

:twocents:

Students should be active participants in their education, but should not be disruptive to the learning environment of the class.

Controlling the class and staying focused on the topics at hand is the job of an experienced professor.

I LOVE this person! I would never, ever, ever do such a thing myself, but I always have my pencil ready when they open their mouth and start irritating the instructor... you just wouldn't believe how many times they manage to get some useful gem out of him/her! :chuckle
