Insert GIANT eye roll
So I am manually entering all of our Kindergarten students into Power School and I catch a student who still needs DTaP #5, MMR/Varivax #2, IPV #4 and ALL Hep B. She has had all the other vaccines up until the 15 month shots. So I just called the mother to ask if perhaps the records she gave me were incomplete (child had a full physical in March and many times the clinics will not note the vaccines the child was given that same day). She says "Oh, we no longer vaccinate for religious reasons" So she has had every other vaccine up until the boosters and suddenly their religious beliefs prevent them from completing the series. Give me an everloving break.
I have to agree with OD 100%. I was a hospital based nurse, in OB/PEDS for 19 years before becoming a school nurse. NEVER in a million years would I have thought it would be as hard ( or as rewarding) as it is. While these posts may sound biased or judgmental, there is a lot of "gray area" for people outside of the specialty. I think what isnt explained, is the frustration when one week a parent is claiming religious exemption, the next gets their shots, or on Tuesday has a MD sign that little Johhny is gluten allergic, but on Wednesday he hates what the school is feeding him so Mom wants us to "cancel" the allergy. Its the flip flop frustration , Im guessing, that makes us sound judgmental. I will say that it does frustrate me when a parent believes that their child is somehow more important than others. I am a parent of 3 children, they are my world. I get we love our kids and sometimes cant think beyond that. I have concerns for my immune-compromised kids, I have concerns for the kids that aren't vaccinated. I have 700+ kids I am responsible for on a daily basis. I believe people have the right to say "No" Just dont flip-flop, stand on your convictions.
I can agree with this. I think that what often sullies a thread is the commentor doesn't understand the environment and context; in this case, school nursing. For example, I couldn't possibly understand the context of Ob/Gyn postings so I would be reluctant to offer an opinion of something I would be ignorant of or not have experience with.
Not meaning to sully with my fairly off-topic post. . . sorry for the interjection.
HATE the post making rounds stating that there is no Autism in the Amish community because they don't vaccinate. UUUUGGGGGHHH! I will, however, pass on Gardasil for now. A 30% coverage does not warrant the risk in my mind.
30% coverage rate? And risk? This is not information that I have heard. Can you cite some sources, because I would like to research this. My understanding is that because this is a recombinant vaccine, there is minimal risk, and the main side effect is near syncope in adolescents.

They JUST found religion! Seriously, I know what you mean, I've seen it several times also! Ridiculous, I think it's more like lazy parenting.
