Insert GIANT eye roll

So I am manually entering all of our Kindergarten students into Power School and I catch a student who still needs DTaP #5, MMR/Varivax #2, IPV #4 and ALL Hep B. She has had all the other vaccines up until the 15 month shots. So I just called the mother to ask if perhaps the records she gave me were incomplete (child had a full physical in March and many times the clinics will not note the vaccines the child was given that same day). She says "Oh, we no longer vaccinate for religious reasons" :banghead: So she has had every other vaccine up until the boosters and suddenly their religious beliefs prevent them from completing the series. Give me an everloving break.

I often wonder...if a child in this situation gets measles or polio or some other disease the vaccine program was designed to prevent...is this parent going to take them to a doctor or take them to their place of worship for treatment?

I have found, on several occasions, that mom (or dad) is in a new relationship or marriage, and suddenly their views change to match their partners.

I had this and I explained to the parent that they need to go get it notarized in order for me to accept this, especially if it's religious based.

I never thought of it from this point-of-view, thanks for that.

We also have to have a notarized form completed in order for parents to claim religious exemption, something new in place this year.

I won't get on my soapbox about vaccinations, but I just can't imagine my child getting one of these disease. What are parents teaching their kids? That autism (I KNOW vaccines don't cause autism, but that is why a lot that I've spoke to don't vaccinate, the fear of delays) is worse than polio, mumps, measles? I tell you what, if my child that was too young for MMR was exposed because of your ... I'll be nice..., or my immunocompromised child on chemo was exposed, there would be hell to pay.

I see this all the time in my middle school. Lots of vaccines given then all of a sudden they stop and claim religious objection. Ugh!

I often wonder if their religious views on vaccinating change if they step on a rusty nail or get bit by a wild animal...

The mother who yelled at me for the immunizations and made me cry, literally said this when she went on her whole spiel. "You know! I'm going to get the immunizations notarized instead so i don't have to deal with this crap and get all the other kids sick, is that what you want? Endanger the whole school?"

Then that day she got the shots done, after making a big deal about it.

Yea, good one! Rabies has virtually been eliminated from the stray dog/coyote/wild animal population in south Texas. Many years ago the state started a program to, periodically, drop zillions of rabies vaccine laced food over the multitudes of open range land and, over time, the rabies infected animals died and could not pass the virus along. Do you think these same people have a religious objection to this project?

I would've said "No, that is exactly what I am trying to prevent by making sure all students are up to date and compliant..."
