This is why I love my job...

Published

There are quite a few reasons to love being a school nurse, but -

My 15 year old comes down to my office every day during his study hall to grab a snack from "his" cupboard. He sits and visits for awhile....he's a teenager - I'll take any visiting time I can get!

My 12 year old daughter also stops in when she doesn't like lunch, and grabs a snack. She also emails me throughout the day for things she needs, things she is working on , etc.

And, my 10 year old is out for recess right now. He just came and knocked on my window. I slid it open and had a quick visit through the screen.

I'm not a helicopter parent - but being here when my kids want to talk....I couldn't ask for anything better!!

Specializes in kids.

Ya mine had his own ATM

Ask The Mom!!!!

Specializes in Telemetry, Gastroenterology, School Nrs.

It's the BEST part about the job!

I see my 12 year old everyday at lunch, and she will wave, have a conversation, or ask for money :)

I see my 9 year old everyday during his lunch and when they line up out side the clinic for their bathroom break (their bathroom is across the hall)

Makes my day so much brighter to see their sweet faces.

This is my 1st year, it's also my oldest daughter's senior year. *gulp* She was thrilled when I was chosen for her school. I love seeing her and her classmates, that I've watched grow up, everyday. OMGosh, I'm depressing myself... Hopefully I'll still be here when my 7th grader and my 3 yr old get here! haha

My youngest son is a senior this year. He comes over to my office a couple times a week, usually when he wants me to go get him a better breakfast. Sometimes he comes over just to visit :) I have really enjoyed being able to be near him everyday for his last 2 years of high school. I am going to miss him next year! But in just 5 short years, my new grandbaby will be here with me! YAY! THIS JOB ROCKS!

When The Big Kid graduated I was fine. Not a tear. His last day of school I was a hot mess.

One of his teachers came in and said, Far? He's not doing well with this at all. He's been tearful all day...

So. When I home I made fun, erm, asked him about it and he said, without embarrassment, Mom...It's true. I walked through the doors this morning and I just could not stop crying.

Awwww.

Aww! I was the opposite, I could not wait to get out of high school. I never did do well with the drama that existed in middle and high school. Still very sweet :)

I was sappy when I graduated. I was a heavy metal chick. A little outcasty (but in a totally cool way.) I had a decent experience, but I'm also embarrassingly sappy.

My guy friends? The heavy metal guys? They got beat up every day.

I hated the football players. They loved us-the heavy metal girls.

Now my kids are football players. And lacrosse. Ad track. AND band.

Maybe times have changed but outward bullying is very much decreased. It's all cyber stuff, or most of it. Which is kind of worse, but not when you are getting your head slammed in to a locker for being in Band.

The HS here is small. The kids have known each other since they were 4, or earlier. Both my kids are having a great experience.

Of course, when HE cried, I cried, because; Mom Heart. I like it.

Specializes in School Nursing, Hospice,Med-Surg.

I'm SUPER sappy. I cry at every graduation service I've been to since I became a mom because all I can do is picture MY kid up there. If I see an adopted kid graduating I really lose it because I'm an adoptive mom. I just identify with those moms for some reason and really fall apart.

I'm already mentally preparing myself for 8th grade grad in 2 years but HS grad will kill me. I know I'll go through some type of deep depression when the kiddo leaves my nest. I may just go live in the dorm with her and work on my MSN.

Then she'll be the one crying.

I love reading the school nurses forum! I want to be one, one day. When I'm over bedside nursing.
