thinking of taking adn to become rn

Published

i am still in high school (senior). always wanted to be in the medical field and thought of becoming an RN by getting the ADN first..at san jac community college south. do i get to take the nursing program when i start college or what? im confused of what to do after high school, i mean by getting adn to be a rn.

anything helps! thanks..

Start by taking pre-reqs. Generally: Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, Psychology and some programs now require Chemistry. Combined anatomy/physiology courses usually won't transfer to a BSN requirement. To get an ASN, you'll also need to take general graduation courses like English, Sociology, Speech, Composition etc. Take the general courses before the sciences because the sciences expire after 5 years and have to be re-taken. Though I did not do it, I recommend straight to BSN.

If you call 281-998-6150, I'm sure San Jac's advising team will be glad to talk to you and get you started. I didn't go there so I can't tell you much in the way of specifics, but I have a good friend who went to South for ADN and she is an awesome nurse working in an ICU now. She even hangs out here at Allnurses sometimes.

do i start the nursing program right when i get out of high school and go to college or do i have to take prereqs/basics.

about how many years is it to get your ADN with taking your prereqs/basics

You have to take prereqs first. Then you apply to the nursing program. I would highly suggest not messing with an ADN and go straight for the BSN.

Go to the website the school you are interested in attending and look at the nursing programs requirements. You must take pre-nursing courses and then apply to the program, which means you have to take an entrance test which varies from school to school. Depending on the required pre-req's and how many hours you take each semester it can take 1-2 years to finish them, then nursing school is usually 2 years long. I'd suggest talking to a counselor at the college so they can advise you what order to take your classes in. Good Luck, admittance to nursing school is very competitive!

It usually takes about 1.5+ to finish your prereq. You then apply to a nursing program and pray that they accept you. I agree with the above posting go straight through and get your BSN (bachelors of Science in Nursing), New York has either passed or going to pass a law that requires all ADN nursing to get a BSN by a certain year, even thought we r in tx, you never know... what to expect..

Keep in mind that ADN nurses and BSN nurses take the same state boards to become RNs, in case you didn't know beforehand.
