There is a thread I subscribed to in general nursing that is "things you'd love to tell a coworker" (or similarly titled) and I've loved following it! I think we nursing students need one!
I'll start.....
1. Student: No, I do not think it is appropriate that we all agree up front to give each other perfect scores on a group project. I probably would have given you one, though, if you hadn't plagiarized most of your part.
2. Faculty: When you give us a question that does not imply "pick the best answer", and I am able to prove to you why two answers listed are, in fact, equally correct according to our textbook, it fills me with rage when you tell me I still got it wrong.
3. Faculty: It was so unbelievably inappropriate that you shared with us in clinical post conference that babies are a gift from god, we shouldn't interfere with the process of natural conception, and people should "just" adopt. You have every right to your opinion, whether I agree or not, but this is an academic setting and you don't know the first thing about any of us, including our reproductive health status or how we were conceived.
4. Faculty: Your judgment about why I'm going into nursing and whether my physical limitations will slow me down was not appreciated. It was also not appreciated when you advised me to give up.
5. Students in my cohort in general: Not to go all sappy on you or anything, but you have renewed my faith in your generation and you have uplifted my spirit on so many occasions. It has been such a joy knowing you and going through all of this with you. I hope with all my heart we stay in touch after graduation.
6. Faculty: You may not realize this, but you made the smallest side comment to me one day that touched my heart in such a way that has kept me committed and passionate in my goals. Sometimes it's the smallest gestures that go the longest ways, and my appreciation for you is endless. Thank you!
Anyone else have anything they've been holding back???
Please do not read the powerpoint that you did not even make and call it a lecture. Students have homework and so do YOU. Every lecture should be organized and like essays should have a introduction, body and conclusion. When we ask you a question please answer it or say, "I am not sure of that answer, let me look that up and get back to you."
Amen!
Is there a pathology that doesn't exist in your family? Your stories don't contribute anything to the lecture our instructor is giving. "My 2nd uncle twice removed had PAD."
This! But I partially blame the prof for letting this person dominate the class time.
Student: When the teacher is talking or demonstrating, SHUT UP. Seriously. Shut your mouth. No, that doesn't mean whisper. Your input isn't important, especially when you're trying to figure out something you were supposed to read up on beforehand and chose not to. And yes, when the teacher has to repeat themselves because you weren't paying attention, the rest of your classmates notice. You disturb others with your incessant talking, you are disrespectful and you are so self centered that when asked politely to stop, you refuse. So let me put it bluntly: shut it or leave.
Student: we all know you cheat. I know it, your classmates know it. And when I get really good resources or make great notes and don't share them, it's because I don't want to help you. You, yes you. You hurt your classmates with your actions, you're dishonest, and I feel bad for your future patients.
Fellow student: Yes, I know you've been an LPN longer than dinosaurs roamed. You still get to wipe butt, brush teeth, and make beds like the rest of us, despite you having gone for your RN "so I can get my desk job" and not need to anymore. Suck it up, buttercup.
Fellow student: You know so much more than you think you do, because if I pop a question out there, you'll know the answer. Stop shortchanging yourself! Have confidence in yourself and your grades will improve. :)
Teacher: Please, stop acting like we are a burden if we ask a question you don't know the answer to. Stop acting like its such a hassle to find the answer. Do not say "Look it up" when we ask a question. Chances are very high we already did and couldn't understand it/didn't find it.
Director: For the amount of tuition I pay and the amount of "flexibility" you demand, it'd be nice if you put your money where your mouth is and meet students half-way at times.
Faculty: if you dont know the answer, please dont BS yourself and talk in circles repeating the same phrase in a different way pretending like you offered any kind of explanation at all.
Students: i know you take your education serious, but dont undermine me because im not as stressed out as you are. just because i'm not freaking out in labs or hiding under a desk during exam day doesn't mean i dont take what i do seriously as well. i dont think any less of you because youre nervous, we were all there once. dont think less of me because ive found a way to deal with it without a panic attack.
I can't think of a better reason for use of modern, evidence-based practice than to counter a student who espouses the beliefs of Aristotle, Galen, and Hippocrates. I get frustrated when people still give dorsogluteal injections!
We all sat there in silence for a minute trying to figure out if she was serious.........she was......
Students: Common sense not so common these days, eh?Faculty: Prep students for "real world" nursing instead of just "NCLEX hospital" nursing. It helps the shell shock when they actually step on a unit. Rainbows and stardust and happy people don't always exist.
i have mixed feelings on this. but most of the time id rather prep for nclex than hearing "real world" stories, mostly because, unless i pass the nclex, ill never be able to experience these "real world" situations i hear so much about. granted i dont think the coursework should be all one-sided.
besides, the shellshock should be long gone in the end when youre through with clinicals
Teacher: Please, stop acting like we are a burden if we ask a question you don't know the answer to. Stop acting like its such a hassle to find the answer. Do not say "Look it up" when we ask a question. Chances are very high we already did and couldn't understand it/didn't find it.
This! ^^^
I'm asking because I didn't understand what I looked up or couldn't find a satisfactory answer. I feel like students should get a $25 rebate on tuition for every time you ask a teacher a good question and they refuse to help you.
Faculty: I understand you are stretched thin with resources. but is it necessary to give us "self-study modules" several times a week? I hope I'm not paying thousands in tuition each semester so you can give us an old laminated copy of questions and send us to sit in a corner with a 500 page textbook. I might understand IF you would at least go over the answers with us when it's completed! We are not learning.
Students: Thanks to those of you who support your fellow students rather than treating it like a competition. Everyone gets discouraged at times. Let's have each others back and cross the stage to get our diplomas together!
One specific student: Shut. Up. You're one of those insufferable know-it-alls who doesn't actually know anything. Stop asking questions that in no way relate to the current lecture. Stop commenting on everything. I swear, our instructor is going to strangle you if you open your mouth one more time. She's probably looking for any reason at all to get rid of you.
Faculty: You give us tutoring in the lab but at times most people can't make and then threaten to stop offering tutoring because no one's using it? We get that there's classes and schedules to work around but come on. Most of us go to work right after class and can't hang around for several hours to get an hour of tutoring.
Faculty: Please try to get organized before you lecture, and please make sure you are prepared to answer questions on the subject you are teaching
Student: Please stop interrupting the instructor every two minutes to ask questions she has JUST answered 5 seconds ago. Asking questions is fine to a point, but you are taking up so much of our class time asking the instructor to repeat herself.
Students: I am so happy that I have such an amazing and talented group of people to battle through nursing school with. I love that we are all able to support one another and help each other. You are all awesome, even you Question Asker.
Clinical instructors: Thank you so much for all you have taught me so far, and all you will teach me in the months ahead. I truly appreciate all of your efforts to help me become the nurse I want to be.

Student: I have not taken biology in over 20 years. Faculty: You should be able to understand anatomy and Psychology 2121,an advance class. They are teaching this stuff to kids in middle school. This truly came out of a professors mouth. He could had said something positive but no.
