Things you'd LOVE to be able to tell patients, and get away with it.

Just curious as to what you would say. Mine goes something like this: Nurses Relations Video Nurse Life

Updated:

Hi, my name is AngelfireRN, I'll be your nurse tonight.

I am not a waitress, nor am I your slave.

Yelling and hurling obscenities at me will not get you your pain meds any sooner than they are ordered. Nor will having your family member or entourage do the same.

Threatening lawsuits and having umpteen family members camp out in the halls or hold up the nurse's station will not get you preferential treatment.

Physically grabbing me as I go down the hall is NOT a good idea.

I do not give the orders, but I do have to follow/enforce them. This is something that you should take up with your doctor.

No, I will not call him again to ask him for more pain medicine. He has been called twice and has said no both times.

No, I will not give you his number so you can "straighten him out".

No, you are not my only patient, and I highly doubt that you are single-handedly paying my salary. On the off chance that you are, let's talk about a raise.

NO, NO, NO, I most empahatically will NOT come get you when it is time for your next pain shot while you are having a smoke break. I also will not bring it to you in the smoking room. (Have actually said that, I am allergic to cigarettes. I did it once, had an asthma attack, desatted to 83, and turned blue, according to the patient and my charge nurse, after the patient had to help me back to the floor).

No, I don't really care if your family has not eaten all day, they drove here by themselves, they are not sick, and no, I will not call for 6 guest trays. (This of course, is if the patient in question does not need all 6 family members present, and is not at death's door).

No, you may not have 3 six-packs of soda from the kitchen, there are other people that would like a snack, too.

No, they will not open up the kitchen up just for you, at 1 in the morning, because you don't like the snacks we have on the floor.

I could think of hundreds, but those will do for a start. I know it sounds mean, but this is why I got out of bedside nursing. When a hospital becomes the Hilton, I'm gone!

Have fun!

I actually DO say this: No, I cannot help you get out of the bed and take you to the bathroom. I will get you the nurse (while you scream at me not to

note: i'm not a nurse.

I'm so sorry that your stubbed toe will have to wait, we are very busy.

"Well how long of a wait will it be?"

Me "I'm not sure sir, but we will get to you as soon as we can."

Patient "this is ridiculous, it's JUST A STUBBED TOE"

Me: "Exactly my point sir, would you like me to take you ahead of the cardiac arrest, or the patient having an active MI?"

Patient "I'm going across town to xxxclininc" me: No problem sir, don't let the door hit you in your orifice"

*************************************************

Me: what medications are you on? Patient : gives long list

Me: do your have any allergies? Patient: Yeah, Tylenol, MOtrin, Toradol, Compazine, Nubain - the only thing that works for my Migranes is Demerol, Morphine or Dilaudid"

Me: Yeah okay, so what your telling me is your drug seeking again!!

Never said these things, but sure would like too

OK here is a story. When I was in nursing school, during our community health rotation we were assigned to a group of patients. Most of our work was centered around the usual assessment and helping patient achieve the best quality of life possible. We were also responsible for reporting saftey hazards to our instructors. Our instructors were the administrators...they ran the place. Well....my partner and I had a very friendly women as our patient. She was usually plesant. Until one day (which I will explain). She was 63inches and weighed 600lbs. She was only 46 years old. She lived at the top of the apartment building on the sixth floor. Needless to say a lot of time and effort was put into how to get her out of the building in an emergency. On top of that she had urinary stress incontinence, which produce an unbearable "stink" in her apartment. She was so big that she couldn't make it to the bathroom during the night, so most of the time...she confessed that she would just urinate on herself. She figured that her aide would be in during the morining and she would get cleaned. Her situation made me very sad. I felt sorry for her, how could anyone live like this...she most feel horrible about herself. So my partner tried to do things to cheer her up and offer suggestions to lose weight. Things were getting bad because this lady coulnd't keep up after her apartment or herself for that matter. Well...one snowy day, we came to clinical and it turned out that the ladies aide called out sick. Subsequently, she had no one to help her bathe. So my friend and I volunteered. First off...we had a hard time getting her out of her chair...mind you both my friend and I are small girls. Then we had to walk her to the bathroom, which was tooo small. We finally get her into the bathroom, now comes the hard part. We have to get her legs over the side of the tube. The hardest part is that she did not help us get her leg over the rail....The story ends with both of us struggling to get her legs over the rail of the tube and her "cussing" us out because we couldn't do it like her "aide". I was soooo upset!!!! I'm thinking: "You mean to tell me that we took the time to help you out and you couldn't even thank us" We didn't have to do it. We were sooo angry, I mean how could a person be so ungrateful.

Sweetie, you've been a nurse less than a year, wait, you will see so much more ungratefulness before your career is over!!

Im an Acute Dialysis Nurse first off...

Here is goes:

First, when you decide to OD on cocaine, for the 3rd time, and skip 2 days worth of dialysis, at least wait till a decent hour to go into the ER, so I wont be "the ****** dialysis nurse" you keep calling me.

Well when you eat an entire watermelon and consume an ungodly amount of fluid, it sends you into fluid overload and it will be hard to breath. Oh and btw, I cant turn the O2 up anymore, 2L/min is the most without a MD order, but it doesnt help unless you are breathing through your nose...

Eating a bowl full of tomatoes, will make your heart race, mostly bc your K is 7.8 and you are struggling to breath...

Go away. Please, just go away. I am sick and I am sore and I do not have the patience nor the inclination to deal with you tonight. I'm so sorry that that microscopic piece of metal that I have to have a magnifying glass to even see is paining you to the point of distraction. It's called being careful. Look before you grab that part, and wear your racking-fracking gloves!

OK, I'll admit it, I really should NOT be here tonight. I have pharyngitis, sinusitis, I have a torn muscle in my back, I can not take my meds because half a blamed Flexeril puts me on my rump, and I still have an hour's drive home. I'm febrile, and I feel lousy. Thank GOD it has been relatively quiet, and I only have 1/2 an hour to go.

But, in spite of my bad day, the kid my age that I worked on in the wreck I barely missed on my way to work, that had to be life-flighted to a Level 1 trauma center, had it so much worse. Restrained, ejected, airbags didn't deploy, found him face-down in a parking lot. Paralyzed on his left side, point tenderness in his c-spine, likely a fx. I beat the ambulance there and was late to work, but I did not care, and I prayed for him all the rest of the way. So for what I'd like to say to him....get well, hon.....please, please, get well.

For crying out loud.. when I tell you to stay in bed, STAY IN BED. I don't have time to run into your room every 10 minutes to make sure your sorry butt isn't on the floor. I have 18 other and sicker patients that need help that I can't help because I'm too busy running into your room. Go.To.Sleep.Right.Now.

And a BIG Thank You to the VA for dumping him on us. We're never going to get rid of him now.

Trust me I'm a nurse

Clear the way, I'm a nurse

I'm not cleaning that up, am not a nurse aid, I'm a nurse.

Hahaha... I'm just kidding! : )

Why do we always assume it is about drugs? (asked by a patient to me after I ask if he takes illegal substances)

Well, possibly the urine that I saw ejected from your member-we actually *gasp* did a tox screen. Yep, it gave it away. All those positives make us "think its about the drugs".

Honestly, I'm just happy if they know what medicines they take. Most act like I'm stupid- like they should really know the medicines they take everyday!

Also pt's will tell you they almost died when they took some ABT. Of course they don't know which one- that's irrelevant.
