Things you'd LOVE to be able to tell patients, and get away with it.

Just curious as to what you would say. Mine goes something like this: Nurses Relations Video Nurse Life

Updated:

Hi, my name is AngelfireRN, I'll be your nurse tonight.

I am not a waitress, nor am I your slave.

Yelling and hurling obscenities at me will not get you your pain meds any sooner than they are ordered. Nor will having your family member or entourage do the same.

Threatening lawsuits and having umpteen family members camp out in the halls or hold up the nurse's station will not get you preferential treatment.

Physically grabbing me as I go down the hall is NOT a good idea.

I do not give the orders, but I do have to follow/enforce them. This is something that you should take up with your doctor.

No, I will not call him again to ask him for more pain medicine. He has been called twice and has said no both times.

No, I will not give you his number so you can "straighten him out".

No, you are not my only patient, and I highly doubt that you are single-handedly paying my salary. On the off chance that you are, let's talk about a raise.

NO, NO, NO, I most empahatically will NOT come get you when it is time for your next pain shot while you are having a smoke break. I also will not bring it to you in the smoking room. (Have actually said that, I am allergic to cigarettes. I did it once, had an asthma attack, desatted to 83, and turned blue, according to the patient and my charge nurse, after the patient had to help me back to the floor).

No, I don't really care if your family has not eaten all day, they drove here by themselves, they are not sick, and no, I will not call for 6 guest trays. (This of course, is if the patient in question does not need all 6 family members present, and is not at death's door).

No, you may not have 3 six-packs of soda from the kitchen, there are other people that would like a snack, too.

No, they will not open up the kitchen up just for you, at 1 in the morning, because you don't like the snacks we have on the floor.

I could think of hundreds, but those will do for a start. I know it sounds mean, but this is why I got out of bedside nursing. When a hospital becomes the Hilton, I'm gone!

Have fun!

I did actually say this one night after 2 previous nites of being "the ***** in the box" as we refer to triage. Had a FF who had chronic back pain, pain was always 12/10 scale. Allergic to everything except dilaudid and percocet. She was going on and on while i was triaging her how I didn't understand pain like she was having, that I was not grasping the severity and depth of her suffering, blah blah. I finally looked and her and said Ma'am actually I do understand, I have a herniation in my back at the same exact place you do and I am here working for 12 hours while taking Motrin, so yes I do get your pain. She of course continued to tell me that my back could not be as bad as hers, tell finally I said well heck want to compare MRIs? She shut up after that. I was wrong to lose my cool but it was a bad night.

No you cannot sleep with your baby in the bed with you. Yes I will remove the baby from your bed everytime I come in here. You might not care if your baby busts his/her head open on this hard floor, but I do.

Mister, I know you can't find your member to place it in the urinal. I can't either, I just look for a hole in your enormous scrotum and hold the urinal an inch below it. But when I say CALL FOR ASSISTANCE when you have to pee, I mean it. You are too big and immobile for me to continually change your bed every time you urinate all over the place trying to use the urinal on your own. And if you say "okay, now pull me up in bed" again, I will laugh and cry at the same time. What makes you think I'm capable of doing that with no help from you? You're twice my size! I didn't do it the last four times you said it, and I'm not going to start now. You need to pull your own self up in bed, you're supposed to be getting mobile and GOING HOME at some point! And when you do, I am going to dance up and down the hallways!

"No, ma'am, just because you gave your daughter a dose of 'pinkeye drops' and her eye didn't magically get better doesn't mean she doesn't have pinkeye."

"Ma'am, I understand that your brought your friend here because it was within walking distance and you have no car, but your friend is out of her head and complaining of s/s that could be fatal if she's not taken care of. She needs a hospital, and I'm calling her a bus to get her there. No, they won't take her back home. No, we can't just 'dose her up' and 'see if it works'. This is a no-kill shelter. Thank you, door's that way."

And the clinker of the week....

"Yes, ma'am, I can sew. Yes, I can sew a lip. No, I will not sew your son's lip. It's got a chunk missing that's the size of my pinky finger tip. It's also split clear to his frenulum. I could try it, but I'm no plastic surgeon, and the result will probably be him bearing a striking resemblance to an old lady who's just bitten a green persimmon, and definitely hating my guts for the rest of both our natural lives."

And that, boys and girls, is why you LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER and DON'T walk behind someone swinging a ballbat.

Boy, what a week it was.

No we do not have any juice! Does this look like a ******* cafe? I will get you a cup of WATER though.

If you ask me how much longer you have you have left 1 more time!

No we will not call in a refill for you because at the rate that you need refills we figure you are either an addict or making good money selling the pills.

Stop hitting on me! I take care of sick people all day what makes you think that I want to do it in my personal time!

LMBO...I love it! Especially that last one! So true. OMG, not even if it is only a family member. After seeing how they act and carry themselves, I would gnaw my own leg off before even considering going out with any of my patients' family members, let alone my patients.

"No ma'am, we do not have a magic pill to cure all your aches and pains. Maybe if you got out of bed and stretched/sat on the chair and got some of the kinks out of your joints you might feel better." to a lady who had been refusing to leave her bed for a couple of days.

(Oh, yeah...I did tell her that, then stripped her bed so she would not sneak back to it while I went to get her a drink. Miraculously, an hour later she said, "OMG! I feel so much better! I haven't felt this good in days!" Surprise, surprise -.-

"Hmm...no, I do not care that you want a coffee right now and a soda and some graham crackers (for the 3rd time this morning). You see all these meds on top of my cart? They are due and I am not allowed to leave them and go fetch for you; so please, go back to your room, use your call light, and stop stalking me down the hallway."

"Oh...you are leaving AMA? Thank you. We need the bed for the STEMI waiting in the ER who will not refuse all treatments except dilaudid and ativan (I hope). And no, I will not give you an extra mg of ativan for the road."

It was a long week.

Sorry the flank steak was not cooked to your liking.

As an 18+ year old adult, you checked yourself into a pediatric hospital. You have a choice to go elsewhere, so if you're not happy with your care, take your adult butt that's currently using very adult language and go to an adult hospital.

Thanks for noticing that I use gloves. I realize that your last caretaker did not use them and therefore you are insulted that I use them while providing care on you. So put a lid on it because I am going to continue using gloves.

Maybe next time you decide you want to go to rehab for your drug addiction it would be a good idea NOT to say you are planning on killing your self with an overdose to get into one. By saying those magic words, when no bed was available at a rehab or dual diagnosis facility they have to keep you safe, which means, you are stuck with me ( and unfortunately me with you) until either the doctor decides you are safe to go home ( which he will not do since you are refusing to see him) or a rehab bed is found.
