Theory and Reseach

Anyone agree that this puts the BS in BSN?

I am a BSN Student and find that research and evidenced based practice should be the corner stone of practice. From my experience, nurses should embrace research a little more than they do and there should be a direct link between research and practice standards.

I can agree that going through a research class can be a pain. But, the practical need for nurses to undestand research and be able to integrate the knowledge gained from research into their individivual practice is very important for the delivery of up-to-date and relevent nursing care.

So, to answer your question, research is important and in my opinion, does not put the BS in the BSN. :)

Good point. For example, evidence base research is very important especially in the area of alternative medicine since there are things in the alternative medical world that works, that does not work, that we don't know yet, or just plain scam. Knowing what evidence and the quality of the evidence help one to do the critical thinking invovle in evaluating a treatment and thus communicate that to the patient.

Excellent post. I doubt anyone could have said it better.

Excellent post, Patrick. Nursing education is never BS or irrelevant. Even though I teach ADN's, I agree that research is very important. I encourage my students to continue in their education and get their BSN and beyond.

Excellent post Patrick.

I particularly find nursing "theory" to be tedious and mind numbing reading.

Hopefully, the original poster realizes the values of theory and research and was mainly making a tongue-in-cheek comment.

But as I go about my running around with my 8 patients, providing for their every need and barely making it through....get out of my face with your research and theory and put on some scrubs. :) :rotfl: :p :chair:

I agree with you Tweets..... My UoP program has Orem's Self-Care Deficit Theory as their foundation. Most all of my classes are focus on this theory and I find it very frustrating. While this theory had its place .... we need more up-to-date theorist to study in nursing.

I tried to implement Orem's theory one day while I was working and I found it totally impossible. Perhaps I do not understand the theory well enough (doubt that!), because there is no way in the life of a normal nurse, that we can take the amount of time that would be required to respond to her theory.

I think the study of nursing theory is very important, but have to agree that it can be mind numbing.

I did not mean to hyjack your thread or post. Please come back and play.

I am an ADN student. I hope to go on and get my BSN.

During a recent paper I wrote, I started to see how nurses can use research to improve patient safety, our work environment, and avoid adverse outcomes. We cannot wait and hope the system does it for us. With the proper evidence and data, nurses are armed with greater power when it comes to passing legislation and changing hospital policy. I admit, I am still pretty green behind the ears when it comes to the medical world and nursing, so I hope I am not too far off the mark.

I think that so called "Theorists" are people who don't want to work in the hospital. Rosemarie Porifice was at my school not long ago and she is full of it.

Devil's advocate here, but medicine is built around evidence-based practice. Nurse theorists try to encorporate the environment, the person, society, and health, and that requires alot more than evidence-based research studies and practice. The mimicking of medicine is one reason we have a hard time defining ourselves as a separate profession. I am not suggesting that there is no place in nursing for evidence-based practice, I'm suggesting that it is not always the best way to nurse.

Exactly my point...it is important in medicine.
