The Worst Hospital Visitor I've Ever Seen

Not every family who visits is there to be supportive of the patient. Some of them are even downright unsupportive. Here are some of the worst visitors I've ever seen -- how about you? Nurses Relations Article

There are so many . . . . how to choose?

There was the woman who'd had an aortic dissection repair, and things didn't go well. She had a perioperitive MI, a CVA and sepsis. All told, she was a patient in our ICU for six months. I didn't hear much about the patient's life from HER; she was confused and mostly nonverbal.

Her sister, however, sat at her bedside for hours and wanted to chat with the nurse. The sister, Katie, was a nice person and since I had just moved to the area, gave me a lot of tips about restaurants to try, where NOT to get your car repaired, and the like.

The HUSBAND, Milton, rarely showed up and when he did, he was the type of man who bellowed about "his rights" rather than understanding that when the patient is in CT (or having a line placed), the patient is unavailable for visitors, even of the spousal nature.

Katie put up pictures in the patient's room -- a smiling picture of her and her sister together, and multiple pictures of the patient's beloved dogs. "They're just like her children," Katie explained. "Milton never wanted children." Tellingly, there were no picture of Milton in the room.

He and Katie barely spoke and Katie told us that when Milton married her sister, he quit working and expected that she would support him, do all the cooking and cleaning and take care of his mother as well. As for the patient, she lit up whenever Katie arrived, but shut down whenever Milton did.

One weekend afternoon, Milton showed up just as I was helping the patient's nurse finish a bath and linen change. Without waiting for the two of us to finish up or get the dirty linen out of the way, Milton leaned over the bed and whispered (loudly enough for the patient and both of the nurses in the room to hear) "I killed your dogs. I said I would do it, and I did." That man has to take the prize for being ONE of the worst hospital visitors I've ever seen.

Years ago, when I worked in CCU, a 58 year old woman was admitted in cardiogenic shock. We placed a balloon pump, lined her, gave her multiple doses of morphine and finally, scheduled surgery for the following day. (The surgeon wanted to do it immediately, but there was already an emergency surgery in progress and the on call OR team were already in that OR.)

At six the next morning, I'm filling out the pre-op check list and a woman breezes in with two toddlers in tow. As I tried to explain to her that visitors under sixteen weren't allowed in the CCU, she told me that she had "just come to drop off her kids for their granny to watch."

Then there was the visitor who injected the patient with some street drug, right through the conveniently placed central line, because "Y'all don't give him none of the good stuff in here."

He rounded up everyone he could including our dementia residents in particular.

I tend to put these topics on mute as I pass on by but not this day.

The gentleman was extorting them that if they prayed hard, their dementia would be gone along with the devil who caused it.

I had to censor that topic and notify the TR department on his topics.

He never returned fortunately.

Strong work.

Oh my Lord!!! it just amaze me how humans can be turned into that... Anyways... I agree with you all... is difficult to choose.

I started working in the US about 2 years ago, I was a nurse in Mexico for about 4 years. It was a shocking experience in differents ways. But what it really suprise me is how the hospital tries to mantain a patent satisfaction level, but most of the people that complain is because they arent receiving "the good stuff". Like really? I've seen administratives moving like crazy because the patient is making a big fuss, just because they aren receiving the "correct medicine" or the " correct amount". Just because they want a number of patint satisfaction to rise... geez!! FYI!!! the will continue complainig of everything!!!! It makes me so mad... mean while there is people awaiting for treatment because we are so full, or as we say code purple.

Ive seen cases where is an obvious case of abuse, or even sometimes the patient doesn't seem that relax while a certain person goes and visit them. I try not to get involve, but is just impossible not too, What I do is I wait until they are alone, and start asking questions about how they feel at home. if they are hesitating, i call social workers, and some ocasions we had to call APS. Is just makes me sad and mad at the same time.

I have to tell you guys, since i move to the states I have encounter so many situations that I just cannot believe. One day an old woman appeared in our unit, it was the middle of December and she was wearing shorts. she was an elder woman, you could see she was cold and that she didnt shower for a few days, or more. She asked for her paperwork, because she was discharged 3 days ago and she starting saying that all the paper were given to her daughter. The way she was saying to me this things it just seemed odd. I asked her : are you cold? she said: yes, and I think my blood sugar is low because im feeling dizzy, So i gave her a cair and a blanket and I started asking all this questions, she told me her daughter kept her in the room, that she wasnt allow to go out side, and that she had to go to the bank to request another card because her daughter was taking her money away, of course we call APS, and she was admited. she had signs of physical abuse. We tried to contact the daughter for more than 5 hours, when she finally answered our calls, she said she wasnt aware of her mom not being at home and that we shouldnt believe in what she said because she was demented... I remember the lady telling me that she didnt wanted to go back with her daughter. A demented patient wont have the capacity of going to a bank and do all the paper work for a new card and saying all this things in such detail. When the daughter finally arrived, she said she didn't want her in her house anymore because she was tired of taking care of her. I wanted to slap her so bad!!! My God, her own mother!!. Anyways the patient was taken to a nursing home. While the daughter is facing charges for elderly abuse. At least this patient was able to be saved from that monster called "Daughter".

I am a Christian and would have done the same thing! This type of thought is quite prevalent on religious TV, but the Bible doesn't teach this!!! It's an abuse of Scripture and an abuse of hurting, ill people!! That makes me so angry I could cry.

Not the hospital and not technically a visitor, but in the same flavor and spirit of the topic.

Have you ever had a patient with chest pain and S. O. B. while the family members are very mad because you didn't give them peanut butter crackers? Oh yes ... mean while you are busy with the EKG's and drawing labs, calling the MD, etc, etc?

Just wow... I bet you wanted to tell her... excuse me "madam" this is not a hotel!!!

While I can appreciate the thrill of sex in a public place, there is something about doing it in a hospital room or waiting room that just wreaks of "no class".

I think doin it in the bathroom would've been classier.

Who wants to hook up in a hospital restroom?? eewww I guess ignorance is a blessing sometimes...

We had a pt who was middle aged man with various complaints. He was from an eastern European country, spoke little English. No clear diagnosis, malaise, N&V, change in mental status that came and went. Female visitor who came every day, all day, constantly complained in poor English about the poor care, we didn't know what we were doing, what is that drug, what are you doing now, etc. After a few days she was caught giving the pt "some medicine" from her purse. It was some kind of herb concoction, not a pill. She was told politely but strongly that this would not be tolerated- of course she complained loudly, but we thought that was it. She was caught two more times (we figured she was dosing him regularly) and finally escorted out by security. She put up quite a fuss, but was barred from the hospital permanently. Slowly the pt got better- poisoning him? as far as I know, the police were never involved.

Just...WOW.

oh my... what the hell is wrong with some people? Sometimes I wish I could read minds and just figure it out if they are faking it, or that's the dumb what they really are?

No, no wonder- overall the human race is pretty pathetic, I am convinced.
