The start of the gender bias already?

Nurses Relations

Published

Well, the very first day that my nursing class came together as a group I was shown how male nurses "fit in" to our program.

It was uniform fitting day for my class and the line was about 50 people even though about half of us had scheduled a time,we all stood in line anyway. Once I finally got up to the part where everybody was fitting thier uniforms, or rather, the females were being fitted and measured, I was handed a zippered smock to try on. I of course, declined the ugliest style ever invented for a man. The smock didn't even have any school colors on it like the female uniforms did so he was quite obviously dumping an excess of bad stock on the guys and giving the females the traditional uniforms.

I didn't want to buy a plain uniform of any kind. The female uniforms were made for the program and the male "uniforms" were just a bunch of crap they couldn't sell anyway. There was nothing special about them.

When I turned down his plain white zippered smock from hell, he started ignoring me and started helping the students with uniforms. He didn't say anything to me about what else he had, he just started ignoring me like I wasn't there. i had to pry the fact that he had some patches I needed and white pants. Of course he didn't have my size of pants to try on and they needed to be measured to length,so I am sure they won't come out right because he just kind of eye-balled the length.

An hour and a half after my appointment that I had for two months and $65 later, I have 2 pairs of pants and three patches to show for it. I now have to spend the next year in school in a different uniform from the ones that my classmates wear.

I am positive that this is only the beginning of the seperatism though.

Any male students want to correct that notion?

The guys in our program had to wear a zippered smock with a collar. It had a small half-belt in the back and a kick-pleat that allowed for easier bending. It was white, with a patch on the upper chest to the side. The kick pleat was functional, but we used to tease the guys about their 'butt ruffle'. ;>P The girls, on the other hand, had uniforms designed in the 1940's!!! Our tops had mid-length sleeves, puffed PUFFED, I SAID! shoulders, piping over the chest like a medical cowboy, and tiny pleats running down each side of a zipper. The bottom flared out slightly so it gave us a nice, wide-hipped appearance that we all adored. The uniform was non-breathable material and was hot as all hell. At least the guys got short sleeves! We sweated our BUTTS off and looked absolutely ridiculous, while they were cool and stylin'. Talk about gender differences!

The guys in our program had it better than the women. We had a stupid uniform with pintuck pleats down the front, and a fabric belt, full skirt. Horrible.

And we were better off than even the year before us - until our year, they had to buy very similar uniforms that had been hand-made by some old lady! They cost like $100 each. Okay, maybe that is apochraphal (or at least wildly inaccurate) but the guys just got white pants and shirt.

My school has nicer uniforms now - pants suits!!! but the pockets are WAY too small. I was noticing that the last time I had students on the floor.

OMG!!! That's the biggest cat I've ever seen!!

Almost as big as my St Bernard!

OH SH*T!

I thought that person was holding a calf !

"Don't give me any crap.........or my cat will eat you!"

Do they clean out the frigging cat box with a snowshovel?:roll

Thanks for the nursing uniform horror stories..........I'm feeling better about looking like the milkman.

Maybe they buy the catnip from 3 mile Island?

Wow Dennie...what DO you feed that beauty?:p

Peeps, you didn't mention what the female uniforms looked like. Could you not wear trousers or shirt of the same colored fabric that is in the females' uniforms?

If the uniform is all white and the females wear smocks, how about getting the color the smock is or the piping on the smock?

If everybody is wearing all white, why don't they let the men get together and choose an outfit that is acceptable to them?

Darby,

If all the uniforms you were offered have the same school colors as the women's do then at least you were considered. The uniforms that we have, or rather that the females wear, have the school colors(maroon stripe and gold trim) and they are obviousely specialy made for them as well as measured and fitted.

Are your uniforms "special order" or can you get them anywhere? [/b]

Man, I'm with you on this one Peeps! We have to order our uniforms from the same shop, so we don't have much choice. I would never wear some kind of zippered "smok" or anything with a zipper! Even if the color was O.K., they won't wash up good because of the zipper running the length of the garment. Also, them suckers are cold against your skin! Not to mention pulling the hair on my chest:rolleyes: I don't like getting a bad start, but I will have something to say! Guys need something cool to wear, so we can stand out in the crowd:D I'm cute enough to where I can probably convince some of the women to change their mind about my clothing choices. :p Anyway, I still don't like it, and I'll surely cause a stink before it's over! We may have to sue somebody Mr. Peeps!(j/k) I'll let you guys know what my "panty waist" uniforms look like on Wednesday. You guys better not make fun of me, of I'll tell on ya'!!!:( I AM OUTTA' HERE! DARBY

P.S. Oh Yeah, PEACE;)

The piping on the female uniforms is a special order. It is not a common uniform. They are in school colors.

Apparently I can choose any 'ol white uniform that I want, but that is not my gripe.

Males will be dressed in white, which they will order themselves instead of having one available and the females get a choice of two types of uniforms that were ordered for them.

The men are simply left out. Judging from the above nightmare uniforms, I guess it's not an issue with all males(puffy sleeves?....yuck!) but in this case I think it's a snub.

It also makes me feel kinda left out:sniff: like the little brother they're all trying to ditch.:crying2:

Let me tell you something Brother Peeps. We are NOT going to be treated like some substandard punks! You and I both have really good GPA's, and have proved that we can do the work! I can understand how your feelings have been hurt, and I feel badly for you. I may be ranting after I see my uniforms Wednesday. My friend, who's a male also, said he was ashamed of the smok that we have to wear. He said maybe we could leave our lab coat on over it to hide the ugly thing! Maybe we could get two of them, so we could crap on one if them, and cover it up with the other one:roll I guess I better stop while I'm ahead. Anyway, we'll figure something out Mr. Peeps. They haven't heard the last of this subject! I'll be back. Darby

Hehe.... good for you guys; I sense a support group in the making...

But really, in our school we realized that the guys kinda got short shrift, and we were pretty protective of them, and made sure we included them-- not unlike the board here, even though they looked a little nervous the first few days out.

I only have one thing to say and it's really not uniform related, BUT after all my pre-reqs with the females in my classes......I pray to have the guys from the classes in my nursing class because I don't know if I can deal with the women I have seen,LOL

Make waves, Peeps....get a dress!:chuckle
