The spouse and I are finishing our first year in nursing school. We love it! We will be graduating in May 2005. We are finding it hard to get by financially. We have taken every loan and grant out there and we have been awarded academic scholorships, but it is still tough. My question - Does anyony know of any hospital scholorships for a commitment of employment?? We are pretty open to go anywhere. If you know any, post them here. Thanks.

I think that's pretty common. Have you tried contacting the hospitals local to your area and asking them first?

Scholarships are very common and usually require a 2 year committment once you are out of school. Some pay all and some pay a little. Here in Columbus, OH they pay all and will send you for your BSN too. A great deal!

If you are currently employed in health care you probably already have that benefit. Have you considered a work study position? Or an nurse aprentice position?
Most hospitals love to hire nursing students as aprentice as they will usually stay past graduation. This could not only supplement your income while in school but insure a job after.
Thanks everyone. I am in a small cow town with very small hospital so aprenticeship is out.

You essentially have your choice of any state in the US and almost any area. Sorry that your area doesn't have it. Most of the larger hospitals have some type of program set up.
Good luck....................... :balloons:

Are you currently working at that hospital?
Does it have tuition reimbursement? That is a great way to have your schooling paid for. You work at the hospital (maybe 2 16 hour shifts on the weekend? That would 32 hours a week and if you and your spouse both could do it it could bring in enough money to significantly help ouit with your living expenses) and they reimburse you for your college hours.

May also be a source of paid-for health insurance.

There's an uban hospital here in town that pays a $700 a month stipend during your second year of nursing school, and then you contract to work for the either 1 or 2 years upon graduation.
Good luck!

Two sources--
1) check with the military. They love nurses. The commission is automatic and you don't have to do the regular full blown boot camp or basic training. (Nurse basic training is mostly "military manners.")
2) the VA hospitals will usually pay off your student loans, etc. over the course of two years.
Either way, the benefits are very good, and you become a government employee. Talk about your job security.
Good luck to you!

Check out the nursing on Indian Reservations. Often, the government will forgive loans for service to underserved populations.

Actually, that's a very good suggestion. I've had to forego my dreams of becoming a nurse for financial reasons; however, I live in Oklahoma and we'd probably need nurses willing to work in the Indian hospitals.
