So I had a thread on here talking about the taking of 'massage devices' from female residents before I started working at my facilty...I found it to be stealing, and inhumane!
Well...since I made it clear that I am all for sexual health of concenting aged adults, that practice is not even walked on! (IE the removal of any personal massage devices from rooms, unless medically contraindicated by an MD!)
So the Admin threw me a doozie today! I have a patient, cancer of the cervix, lady parts, and privy parts! Most of the tissues were removed, the privy parts totally removed.
They found that she was using a rather large massage aid to achieve sexual health..and it was hurting her. But despite the hurt...she continued to use said device nightly.
Now, I am not a 'device' salesperson...so I can't really tell her the type more appropriate for her anatomy...but I did suggest sufficient lubrication and got an MD order for said lubrication! The admin was shocked! But the patient was very very happy!!!!!! (and PRN pain meds too).
She told me that despite her cancer and "loosing my feminity at the highest level!!!" she wanted to experience the life she knows, and since she doesn't have a 'partner' she would do it without no matter what we said!
Now, if I wasn't there advocating and giving nursing suggestions, she would damage herself, but I looked at it as "well if she is going to do this...lets lower the risk of harm". Very odd to my admin!
Question....now as I would never advice a 'device', can I advise a catalog where she may find a more appropriate massage device??? But those catalogs are..ummm...well...I thought of Adam and Eve? I don't know...not like there are too many medical or reg catalogs that...well you know!
Suggestions?????????? I am treading in the gray here, and really want to be a good nurse for her, but where does nursing and sexual subjects end/begin?????
Thanks!!!!!!!!

I have such firewalls that I can barely get to the sites...but I have done my research...
There are large, medium and small devices..and hers is LARGE!...I think a medium to small (small since her operation) would be appropriate and more anatomically correct...but how do I broach that??? I can't be a 'Media' seller!!?!?!?!?
Adam and eve seems to be the more mellow (if you can gauge the subject mellow???), and it is just www and adameve.com Oh I feel so dirty typing it...it is a mellow site..just get past the videos!
I feel so.......ummmmmmm...but again..she needs some education, as well as others...but I need to know what I can suggest and let them find on their own, vs helping?!?!?!
Oh man...so my DON teased me today..saying her KY expense just went up thanks to me...the FIRST time I have ever blushed! I feel so torn..it is healthy for people to explore rational healthy sexual satisfaction..it is our job to advocate it...but where do we say...'can't help any more than this"..... Isn't that nice...we learn in school that is it what we do...but nothing more than that! NICE AND THANKS! LOL!!!!!
UHGGGGGGG...I always get the challenging cases huh?
I don't think adameve has pop ups or e-mail recongnition..but I have such fire walls they won't go through anyway...but thanks hon! I appreciate your trying to help..and Lord knows I need it!!!!!!! LOL!

God bless you for being so incredibly compassionate! This poor woman is so lucky that you're looking out for her, and letting her know it's okay to still want to feel like a woman even though the outer trappings are gone!
Does your facility have access to psychologists/therapists? Maybe a connection there to a relationship or "sex" therapist who can make recommendations? I bet their firewalls would allow much more of the type of content needed to get the info. :chuckle

They have a sexual health section that presents products in a non-Mediaographic way. Check them out.

i want to echo and reinforce what penguin said- i am soooo impressed with your dedication and sensitivity to your patients' needs.
if the agency/facility's psychologist doesn't have any referrals, the social worker should and if they don't, they are the ones who should be trying to get hold of a sex therapist and explain the situation for a dying woman.
triage, i am truly impressed. you are something else.

I'm not shy...LOL. I'm pretty open to talking to patients about things like that...I don't really like the idea of cleaning the devices after use, but what the heck if it makes people happy... :)
I like Adam & Eve...they have all sorts of toys in all shapes and sizes and textures...

I wonder if you could contact or email Sue Johanson? She is the nurse who has that sex show - I think it's called the Sunday Night Sex Show. Someone was talking about her, and she gives legitimate info to people who have problems. Since she's a nurse, maybe she would be helpful?

Hmmmm, this is an unusual thread....
Now, you are talking about some sort of masturbation device for someone whose genitilia has been mutilated by cancer surgery? I can't quite picture what you're talking about, forgive me...

Don't rehab folks deal with these issues for other disabled folk? Maybe they would be able to help...

Xandria's site has no pop ups and no spamming. They also offer phone consultation for people with disabilites or special circumstances, although I don't know how good their reps are (never tried it).
I wonder if you asked a urology doc, or a psychiatrist if there's anyone known for being up on sexual health nationally? They may know a name, and you could go from there. I know there is a woman's sexual health clinic somewhere out there run by sisters, a psychologist and an OB/GYN but don't remember their names or the place (I saw it on Oprah)

I think the sisters names that you are referring to are Berman and Berman. They also had a show on Discovery Health Channel on Direct TV.
