The "Real" Problem With Nursing

Is people who recognize the fact that there is a problem, and instead of standing up, doing the right thing about it by galvanizing their colleagues whether they be fellow nurses, instructors, or students, they insult their colleauges. They come on forums like these to incite arguments, whine about how they don't get respect, insult everyone by calling them names, and do absolutely nothing to boost the team morale. I think we all know there are a few things that need to change when it comes to nursing. There is no profession out there that is perfect, every profession has its share of issues, but I think if we continue to support each other as well as those entering the field, we may see the dynamic change. I think it its impossible to think we can change everyone's attitude but if each individual takes some accountability and tries to spread a good attitude, maybe it'll become infectious. Lets not bring down the standard of nursing by bashing our own. Lets uplift each other, respect each other, and help each other. Take it upon yourself to say I won't be the one bashing my own colleagues. No change happens over night but I do think until we stop complaining about how people complain too much then maybe, just maybe the dynamics will start to shift.

Personally, I believe that an awful lot of forum responders take offense far too easily. They are incredibly quick to cry "nurse-bashing" when someone offers a critique of the state of nursing, even when some/most/all of the critique is transparently true. Some responders even cry foul when a poster mentions a problem and offers a potential solution which, in my book, is the definition of constructive criticism.

Hear, hear. Someone posted a news item not long ago about a patient playing Sudoku who stabbed his nurse with a screwdriver when she came near him. I posted a comment (something to the effect) that it I had finally figured out why I couldn't figure out Sudoku was because I didn't have a screwdriver.

I can't remember how many people jumped down my throat and made comments about nurse bashing/lack of respects, etc... without one single one of them looking at my profile to figure out that I wasn't some nutjob off the street who wandered over here to troll. Been a nurse 21+ years with 10 of them in the ED and have myself been punched, kicked, spit on, more than once (and bitten one time) over the course of my career.

I was in no way condoning violence in any form against anyone, simply acknowledging the existence of it and letting off steam as well as commiserating (in my own odd way) the shared experience. I never responded to the disgruntled - why? I haven't yet found the key to open closed minds or the right way to deal with the easily offended. Let 'em get it off their chests and let he who 'gets' it, get it. I don't tend to take many things personally, and can't help those who do. :yawn:

Thanks so much for the laugh, I haven't tried a screwdriver either! Not sure about the original post. I find venting helps alot. Often I vent about what are really minor things just to get it off my chest. I know that we're all unique individuals who bring our strengths and weaknesses to the job. I LOVE nursing, I think I have a good attitude, yet I still LOVE to vent on this site!

i agree with you. in all type of professions, there is "whining", backstabing, etc. not just in nursing. and nurses or future nurses should support each other and not bash against each other. and like someone in another post said: "actions speak louder than words"

In my view, the "real" problem - at least one of 'em - is considering "nursing" to be some monolithic entity when the reality is that it's such a broad field with vastly different requirements in terms of education, skill, knowledge, and experience.

Although I'm as apolitical as one can get, I am a member of my state's advanced nursing practice organization as well as being a member on the government relations committee.

Its important for nurses to be politically active so that we can influence the laws that affect our practice.

IMHO: Amen brother!

I had the displeasure of doing my clinicals in a hospital in which the management blatantly kept the staff at each others throats (incident reports up the whazoo) to avoid getting a union. Fortunately a new hospital was built to compete and suddenly the managers had to suck up to staff to keep them.
