HI

Ok, I have been reading through all the other posts. Is it true I can get licenced in another state say Vermont or NM and then apply to california? I am an Australian nurse, and I have heard california is pretty tough to get licenced with an takes up to a year. If I get licence in vermont, what is involved to get licenced in california

thanks so much for your help.

Don't think there is really any quick states to go through licensure and haven't heard it is hard to get licensed in Ca. The issues are Ca will only issue a hard license once you are in the US with a valid work visa and have a SSN. Even if you get a license in another state when endorsing you will have to follow requirements for foreign trained nurse and they do their own evaluation. What visa are you looking at for the US. Even if looking at E3 there are a few more things you need which includes VSC which can also take up to 4 months and you need a pass with NCLEX before they will issue it.

Specializes in CTICU.

I got licensed in VT before endorsing to another state (not CA) and it took about 4 months for VT to issue permission to test, then I took NCLEX then got license within a week and endorsed to another state within another 3 weeks and received that license.

You need to check out CA's rules for Licensure by Endorsement

It took 3 months for all my transcripts to be sorted out and sent from New Zealand, 4 months for me to get permission to sit NCLEX from Vermont, another 2 months studying, so all up I spent 9 months in total to get my Vermont license.

I'm applying for a GC based on marriage to a US citizen.

I am currently on the E3, I live an work in the US, just not as a nurse yet. I have been here, 1 year, I am finishing off my nursing study externally now. My partner is american so I am not too worried about the visa situation. My main concerns is the wait time.

I am really worried that I will graduate at the end of this year, get my registration for queensland brn, then have 2 wait another year until, the board of california nurses tell me I need to take another class and then struggle to find a university of california that will accept me for one subject.

Is there any guidelines available to tell me what they are looking for.

thanks so much for your advice.

how do I find the rules for california licensure, the cbrn tell me it is not available to the public.

It can be downloaded on their website: http://www.rn.ca.gov

You will need to have your records evalutated to see if you meet the requirements for licensure in the US, and this includes having hours in all of the required areas including peds and OB, as well as mental health. Adn the clinical hours need to be at the same time as the theory hours.

Not sure what you have completed already in your country, do you actualy have the three year degree completed? Or what type of training are you getting here at this time?

Please be aware that CA will not look at anything until you have actually completed the three year program from there and then submit your application for licensure as well as transcripts. As a foreign grad, you are subject to the additional time for verification of credentials, the normal wait is about four months if nothing is missing.

Thanks again for everyone's advice

I have a 4 year undergraduate degree in Health Science and I am now working on my 2 year, graduate entry Bachelor of Nursing Science. It appears to extensively cover acute and community and even mental health nursing but I haven't really done anything in maternity or paeds, so I am taking 2 professional development courses offered through another university in australia that include theory and prac in both of those areas.

I now, won't submit anything until after I graduate. I guess it just all takes time. But after reading all the post I am confident with my studies I have the best possible chance at full filling the criteria.

There is nothing on California brn site that explains how the assess international application, I have looked and have asked C brn. They said the information is not available to the public.

As per the question on your other post, I have a SSN, I live and work currently in San Francisco. But I am currently on the E3, after the wedding I will swap to a work card, which is when I will be applying for CA Licensure, my green card can take up to 2 years. so I don't know if I will have it by the time they assess my studies. Must I also have the green card before I apply??? If it helps I am a clinical research coordinator and at the time of my application I will be working in a UC hospital.

Hi,

I have been hunting for information everywhere and I just had another look on the california board of nurses site and this forum:

From what I can gather the keys things that are essential for registration, I just wanted to get your impressions I am not missing anything:

Theory / Experience - clinical prac / placement in:

Microbiology

Anatomy / Physiology

Sugical nursing

medical nursing

Mental health nursing

Paeds

Maternity

- Completed degree in Nursing, deemed equivlant to a US degree.

- Licencing in you home country (optional but requested by california)

- the right visas / green card

Is there anything I am missing, from all my reading this is what I have determined is the most crucial.
