Has anyone seen tit? First I thought it was about nurses. There was a smiling elderly man in a scrub gently handing a baby over to a new mother, as soft background music played. Then I thought something was weird. The man was older - much older statistically than an average male nurse. Turns out, it's a doctor. A doctor! I've NEVER seen a doctor hand over a baby. I have nothing against doctors in general, with all that economic/work backlash against nurses, one of the only thing it seems, that we can still possess and identify with is our bedside care and compassion we give our patients - and this ad just bothers me because it's elbows the last shred of territory we call our own. Not because doctors are not allowed to do something like hand over a baby for the first time, but because they simply don't!
And the fact that they used someone that's demographically less likely to be a nurse, I think is intentional, and evident that they realize how people could immediately identify that gesture as belonging to a nurse. If it had been a woman or a less elderly man, you would think it's ad from the nursing association.
Has anyone seen this ad? What do you think, am I crazy?

I saw it.
I've never seen a doc do any of the things in that commercial.

I'm not a nurse yet, still a student...but when I first saw the beginning of the ad I was proud of the nurses being shown in such a good light....and then, after finding out it wasn't an ad for discovernursing.com but for AMA I became confused. So far in clinicals, that's not exactly the type of MD's I've come in contact with...when I do come in contact with them

I have seen this ad several times and I agree with the OP, I have never seen MDs do what the ad shows them doing.
At some point a child hugs a doctor around the knees... around here, doctors are running too fast to get out the door for a child to catch them to hug...
And at first I thought the man handing the baby wa the grandfather.

So True!!!! It is us nurses who are there after the MD gets his 15 minutes of fame to pick up the pieces or reexplain what the MD meant by cholelithiasis. :)
I saw the commercial and the first thought that came to my mind, "Oh my, the AMA is planning something and are buttering up the public... probably gonna screw the nurses and healthcare workers!!!"
LOL.
I have a very suspicious nature!

I admit I got a kick out of this article:
The AMA once represented two-thirds of the nation's doctors, but its influence has suffered because of.....the perception that it is a trade group more interested in its own well-being.
Precisely.
the AMA has hurt patients by resisting universal health care and focusing on malpractice reform rather than the "grossly inadequate disciplining of doctors."
Right again.

Same here! I got teary eyed and thought it was some Johnson and Johnso nurse promotion thing then it was an MD and got very confused. Then I felt guilty b/c why not have an ad that supports their work but previous post are correct. It's mostly the nurses doing that not the md. Jeeze! I guess it just sucks b/c I rarley see stuff about nurses! Unless it's on A&E talking about some psychotic nurse who killed her husband! And I get so annoyed with tv shows everyone wants to see the people perceived as more influence or is it power although it isn't but seems like that. I have wanted and will write a letter to MTV about nursing issues and promoting younger people to get involved. I want them to do one of there shows "True life, I'm a nurse" shows! But then you have to deal with pt confidentiality but there are so many medical shows it can be worked around.

I don't wish to upset anyone ... but I've read numerous vitriolic complaints here at allnurses.com about the warm, fuzzy Johnson & Johnson ads.
Now we're upset about warm, fuzzy AMA ads.
Is it the warm, fuzzies in general that upsets some people ... or just anything that makes physicians look positive?

Well, some of the scenes aren't typical, but indeed, I have seen many physicians listen to patient lungs, as is portrayed in the ad. Obviously AMA is trying to buck up the image of the physician...
I've always maintained nice relationships with the physicians I've worked with...and felt they were actually trying to help their patients, so I didn't really have an issue with the Ad.

I have NOTHING against physicians. I guess I'm more jelous b/c it seems they are more established through the media and tv shows and I just don't see it much with nursing. It's just there is all this medical programing but I do not see nurses and it stinks.
