The Movie and TV Thread

Updated:   Published

I started a thread here that I meant to put somewhere else,  and I erased it.  So what to discuss in the coffee lounge?

Have you seen any good movies lately?

Last movie I saw was "The Last Duel". Pretty good.

Anyone seen "Dune"?  I see it's available for streaming and might rent it.  It's up for an Academy Award for best picture.

Astroid City is a very odd movie but well done.   I think it's one of those movies you either get or you don't.  There's a lot going on and I can't hardly explain it so I'll include a professional review.

Stars, I did see this in the movie theater.  AMC has $6.00 movies on Tuesdays which is up $1 from their $5 Tuesdays they had for years.

"A Thousand and One" is a very well written and acted movie that spans several years of a mother who get out of prison and takes her son illegally out of the foster care system to raise him in Harlem.  She's a very flawed and broken character and there's a good twist at the end.

As I was writing this review, I started to wonder about the title and I'm not sure why it's called "A Thousand and One" and will have to look into that.

Edit.  Here's what the film maker said about the title.  It completely went over my head.

Quote

The title, "A Thousand and One,” Rockwell said, isn't just Inez and Terry's apartment number, "It's a play on words, about the group versus the individual. It was really about the uniqueness of New York, and the way it's lost its sense of individuality, and how that change affected its citizens.” When gentrification infringes on underrepresented communities after failing to prioritize them, homes are stripped away from them, consequently causing feelings of isolation in the very same places people grew up in. The meaning of the title reflects how people like Inez and Terry feel when the odds are against them.

Chevalier is an English language film set in revolutionary France and tells the story of black composer and musician Joseph Bologne who was born the illegitimate son of a plantation owner and his slave.

It's a captivating story, well acted with great costumes, set and cinematography.

I decided to watch "They Cloned Tyrone" on Netflix because it was getting such good reviews.  One has to get past the profanity and liberal use of the "n-word" throughout, but underneath is a really good movie.

I like this description "They Cloned Tyrone combines sci-fi, '70s Blaxploitation comedy, and caper elements. It shows the story of Fontaine (John Boyega), Slick Charles (Jamie Foxx), and Yo-Yo (Teyonah Parris), as they unravel a government conspiracy. "

Profanity alert in the trailer.

I went to see Barbie because of all the hype and that it's good reviews from critics.

It lives up to the hype with good acting, a good plot, and social commentary, along with a great soundtrack.

Another great movie that lives up to all the hype is Oppenheimer.  It deals with a lot of the politics of the time and after, the moral dilemmas, and some of his personal issues.

It has a stellar cast of A-listers and B-listers that give great performances.  Most notably the lead and the roles by Matt Damon and Robert Downey, Jr.

I've always enjoyed watching what I call random documentaries on amazon prime, Netflix, and YouTube ranging from anything to science, food, to even military stuff. I came across this documentary on the Anonymous group and the famous Commander X by the YouTube channel ENDEVR. I remember hearing about Anonymous while I was growing up in my late teens and early 20's, but it was interesting to see a small picture of what they were really about.

The ENDEVR YouTube channel is loaded with documentaries from anything and everything so if you're interested in that stuff, I definitely recommend their channel. Though, some of their videos are outdated and old ones, but they're great podcasts for one that has a long commute to work like me.

Documentaries are indeed an interesting genre.  I'm currently watching "Poisoned" about the food industry.

Polite Society is about a British Pakistani high school student with aspirations to become a stunt woman who tries to save her sister from a marriage with bad intentions.  It's an unlikely scenario, with cliche fight scenes, but it all works for a quite entertaining movie.

I saw "After Love" which is a devastating story of a woman who after her husbands death finds out she had a secret lover across the English Channel in France and even has a child.  When she is mistaken for a cleaning lady she plays that role to find out more about this woman.  Very well done and the lead actress Joanna Scanlan won a BAFTA (British equivalent to the Academy Awards) for best lead actress in 2022.

The Wonder is billed as a psychological thriller.  It's very well done and holds you to the ending.

"Peace By Chocolate" is a feel good true story about Syrian refugees in Canada that make it big by making chocolates.  It also is about family, particularly a son's obligation to his father at the sacrifice of his own ambitions, as well as loss.  The ending shows snippets of the real life people the movie was based on.  At the end of the movie I was sad to see it was dedicated to the actor that portrayed the father who had died after he completed the movie.

It can be streamed by Amazon Prime members at no extra rental cost.

A 2017 movie on Netflix based on a memoir about siblings that must fend for themselves because of their unconventional upbringing.  Lots of issues and family dynamics.  Very well acted and told.
