I started a thread here that I meant to put somewhere else, and I erased it. So what to discuss in the coffee lounge?
Have you seen any good movies lately?
Last movie I saw was "The Last Duel". Pretty good.
Anyone seen "Dune"? I see it's available for streaming and might rent it. It's up for an Academy Award for best picture.
In the theater I saw the movie "Bros" which I guess is a big deal because it's the first gay rom com put out by a major studio.
It's bombing at the box office so it might be the first and last. That said it's getting great reviews and widespread support in the gay niche market.
Personally I loved it. Lots of romance and comedy, but also some good social commentary.
Saw Wakanda Forever in the theaters where a movie of this magnitude should be seen. Not as good as the first one but nonetheless excellent movie.
Rented "Triangle of Sadness" from Amazon and it was one of the weirdest stories I've ever seen. It was really good though. On a side note one of the starts is the first Filipina actress to get a Golden Globe nomination (best supporting actress).
Saw this in the theaters as well. Well worth the hype and award nominations it's gotten so far this award season.
In the theaters, I saw "Babylon".
It was a bit over the top, but very well done. Obviously had a big budget. The acting was top notch and I would expect a Screen Actors Guild Nomination for best ensemble. Which actually come out today so we'll see if my prediction is correct. Maybe a best supporting nod for Brad Pitt or actress for Margo Robbie. It was a stunning movie over three hours long but held my attention but for a nature call. LOL
Because it got a high rating on Rotten Tomatoes and showed up on the Independent Spirit Awards for Best First Feature and Actor, I had on my list to see "Aftersun". It finally became available for streaming so I rented it on Amazon. I see also it showed up on the BAFTA (the British version of the Academy Awards) for "Best British Film" and "Best Lead Actor".
Honestly it was a slow burn and didn't seem to have much of a plot other than scenes of a father and daughter on vacation. This is one where you had to dig deeper into the subtleties of what was going on with the two main characters and it was really brilliantly done if you paid attention.

The Woman King was getting such good reviews and I like Viola Davis so I thought I would see it. It indeed is a very good movie, with great acting and scenery.
There is some buzz that they glaze over that the tribe depicted were involved in the slave trade, but it is mentioned and part of the movie. But it's only a movie.
