The Mockery of Nursing

Published

Just a bit ago the top three threads involved:

1.I have a DWI. Can I be a nurse?

2.I am stupid. Can I be a nurse?

3.If it takes me five times to pass NCLEX, Can I be nurse.

Not much left to add. Says it all.

It's gone now. I didn't initially realize it was OP's first post so more than likely, someone was bored this afternoon.

You're right, the willingness of others to jump in and defend is amazing. As perpetual student pointed out, this wa not something in someone's past, it was current and there was nothing said to suggest any sense of remorse.

If/when that nurse makes a med error, you can bet they will not own up to it , even if it places a patient in significant danger. That is what is so scary.

what scares me even more is the number of posters who pat the poster on the head and say "there, there, you can still be a nurse." i'm a convicted axe murderer. can i still be a nurse?

there is never any shortage of posters who jump into a thread and say "there, there -- that preceptor was just mean" or "hold your head up because you're a fantastic nurse." it makes me wonder about their assessment skills. seriously. if you don't know anymore than what is posted on these boards and you're still sure the preceptor was mean and the poster is a fantastic nurse, clearly assessment skills are lacking.

Yeah, I loved how one poster immediately pounced on those finding fault with the current shoplifting. As if anyone who doesn't steal from others is practically a nun.

Is thievery really so common place now that it's expected rather than aberrant behavior? I'd better get a mean dog and a better safe.

It seems the thing most of these "mockery" threads have in common is an unsettling lack of self discipline, integrity, and work ethic.

much like on another thread where i had to ask how the heck people can keep saying "hang in there, i just know you'll make it (nclex pass, that is)", or "i am sure you can do it" or "i know you'll be an amazing nurse". really? how the heck do they know this, when it seems glaringly obvious that the opposite is true?

Come to think of it, I imagine that to some people a Certificate of Participation for Nursing School should be good enough to land a job in any ICU in the country. Who needs those pesky minimum passing standards?

I think I read that same post. I tried to take the NCLEX X amount and this in my Nth time and I HAVE TO take it because my ATT expires in five days. Can anybody help me? Oh and BTW I haven't studied at all.

Yep, exactly. Post was less than 24 hours from testing time, ATT expired at that same day/time, and OP admits to zero preparation after an insane amount of fails. Never, actually, have I even heard of that many fails. It was ridiculous, and absurd for people to be feeding into the fantasy of a possible pass. But we'd better be careful here; that's a closed thread now and we wouldn't want anyone getting testy. ;)

That was the point of my "flying" post. I was waiting for someone to tell me to just believe in myself and pray because if I did those two things I surely would be able to fly!

I also am amazed at how much and how often the Almighty is invoked when it comes to the NCLEX. Guess "put your trust in Kaplan and It will see you through all things" doesn't have the same panache, eh?

Do you remember the thread about the nurse who had money stolen from her, and she was trying to decide if she should press charges? There were so many posts saying she shouldn't, she should put herself in the thief's shoes, etc., etc., etc. Unbelievable. Now, if Jean ValJean stole from me, perhaps I might be more forgiving, but as far as I know, he's a literary character.

i love the ones about how the preceptor is mean to them and hates students. they admit that they never actually talked to the preceptor about the plan for the day, their learning goals and objectives or anything else at all because they can see that the preceptor hates students. they just avoided the preceptor all day. now, if they get a bad evaluation on that clinical, they'll be whining about how unfair it is, that they wouldn't have gotten a bad evaluation if the preceptor didn't hate students.

i don't know why i engage . . . advice to talk to the preceptor is met with accusations of rudeness. "i just wanted to know how to handle the situation if it happens again. no need to be rude." ummmm -- if the situation happens again, talk to the preceptor rather than just assuming that she hates students. and no, i'm not being a negative nancy. i was trying to give advice, advice that would actually be helpful. instead, it seems we're just supposed to jump on the thread and agree with them that the preceptor was mean and they were correct to hide from her all day.

Wow, I missed that one. The only reason I might not press charges would be out of convenience to me. But odds are it would be plead out and at most I'd have to give a statement.

We had a patient the other recently who had an outpatient surgery and was caught emptying everything out of the cupboards into her backpack and belongings bag. How hard up do you have to be to steal used hospital linens and slipper socks? Yet that same patient has enough money for cigarettes, of course. I just cannot fathom that attitude of entitlement.
