Ugh the impending doom. I could never sleep at night because of it when I did days. How is this one: I'm up now at 5:30am because work just called asking me to come in at 7. I literally got home from work at 1am this morning. After having 9 pts on a med-surg floor. Yeah. Thanks but no thanks. Good luck at work today.
wow they have some cojones lol...
my goals for the day.....no codes, no falls....
beyond that they will be getting minimal care.....sad.....but what can I do
i have realized that in todays hospital atmosphere i will have to resolve myself to often times providing the most basic level of care and not the world class care that I had envioned as I took the stage on graduation day....
reality shock?
yep.......but management obviously does not care...so...why should I let it stress me out?

In nursing, I've learned to expect EVERYTHING...nothing is off the table
Seething oneself up for the "ideal" can lead to disillusion and burnout.
Go in there, give your best care...believe in YOU give the "world class care" that YOU can give today, and survive the shift!

It just is amazing how supervisors can call nurses in with no regard for patient safety. How would they expect you to function on four hours sleep and would they stand behind you if you made errors? Nothing seems to change as it was like this in the 70's! Bad thing now is everyone is on duty 24/7 given the advent of cell phones (unless you remember to turn the darn thing off!).
i tell all my bosses straight up...if I do not answer my phone consider that a respectful no thank you.......

Some days, it just doesn't pay to chew off the leather restraints, amiright?
Seriously, there are times when all you can do is punt. No one is going to die because they didn't get a bedbath. Hit the high spots only... focus on priorities & don't feel guilty. Always look at Caller ID before answering your phone!!!! Short staffing is not your problem.
