The HRSA Nursing Scholarship

Updated:   Published

The HRSA nursing scholarship is available now. I just submitted my application although I'm probably a long shot.

How to Apply for a Scholarship

If you're interested in pursuing a career in healthcare, you may be eligible for a scholarship through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The HRSA Scholarship Program is designed to support students in various healthcare disciplines who are committed to serving underserved communities and helping to address the shortage of healthcare professionals in those areas.

HRSA offer scholarships to help pay for health professions' education.

All Scholarship awardees will provide a one-year service commitment for each year of scholarship support received.

The application cycle typically opens in late Winter or early Spring and closes in late Spring or early Summer, so be sure to check the website regularly for updates.

Scholarship requirements:

To be eligible for the HRSA Scholarship, you must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited program that leads to a degree in one of the following disciplines:

  • Nursing (including RN, ADN, BSN, and graduate-level nursing programs)
  • Nurse Practitioner
  • Certified Nurse-Midwife

You must also be a U.S. citizen, a national, or permanent resident.

Have no federal judgment liens and service commitment.

If you meet the eligibility criteria, you can apply for scholarship through the HRSA's online application system.

Scholarship award covers:

  • Tuition and Eligible Fees
  • A monthly stipend for living expenses
  • An annual other reasonable costs payment

If you have any questions about the program or the application process, the HRSA offers resources and support to help guide you through the process. Don't miss out on the opportunity to receive financial assistance while pursuing your dream of a career in healthcare and serving those in need.

If I get an award drinks are on me!!!!!

Just kiddin HRSA! :p

I applied and sent in my paperwork. I was reading some post on here from last year, and they are saying there is a credit check?? Is this going to determine if you get the scholarship. I have an EFC of 0, but I don't have that great of credit.

I am wondering if I should apply to this, I am in the Bay Area and am not sure if there will be hospitals in my area with a nursing shortage.

Hey reebles, I'm from the Bay Area too. From what I've been told if you get the scholarship you are most likely going to have to move out of the area to an area that really need nurses. This could even mean that you might have to leave California and go to another state.

I think from what I've read it's just to establish that you're not in default on any federal financial obligations... it seems silly to base the scholarship, which essentially requires you to have no money (zero EFC), on credit scores. ;) But you definitely need to be in reasonable financial shape when it comes to any federal student loans or other public financial dealings.

Yeah, and this is not an option for me. My fiance bought our house last year and we want to stay in California. Thanks for the reply.

I wonder how many applications they'll receive this year. I want to feel like I have a good chance at this (I'm solidly in the first-preference group) but I don't want to get my hopes up either. July 31st seems like an eternity away! :-/

I am curious about this also. I read other people posting elsewhere that they received 4000+ applications but their website said last year only 480 eligible applicants or something. If they are giving out 500 this year, chances should be pretty darn good for eligible applicants. I wonder if the people they considered "ineligible" were people with an EFC above 0? I read that they would take people starting with their lowest EFC if they filled the funding groups....so they technically wouldn't be ineligible!

I've been reading through last year's thread and I'm curious how the application process has changed. Several times in last year's group it was mentioned that the final recipients were selected at random from the group of eligible first-preference applicants, but surely that's not still the case, otherwise what's the point of the essays, the letters of rec, transcripts, etc etc? Did last year's (or earlier) applicants have to do the essays/LoR/transcripts too?

This what I got via email. I don't think I will get it if based on EFC. :crying2:

hey vincent,

is this similar to whats listed under your required supplemental document page?

supplemental documents:

unofficial transcript, letters of recommendation, good standing report, and essays are the only documents need to be submitted at this time. if selected for an award you will be contacted for additional documents.

When I logged in I saw this message " Required supplemental documents- Make sure we have all of your required documents (including the on-line banking portion) to make your application process complete." and then when I clicked on the "Required supplemental documents" I saw all the forms and essay questions.

I don't even know why I bother this because my EFC is $21233.

Wow....the anticipated notification period is getting later and later! First they said July 31st...the email said August/Early September....and now the message on the NSP website says September/Early October. Bummer!!!

My fall tuition is due in early August. If I get the scholarship, will they pay the school and have the school refund me? I think I remember seeing something like that...
