Hello,

My Nursing class has to read a whole bunch of really boring Sociology chapters for the exam. People have stated that they are not going to read it because the class lectures are enough, and It would be a waste of time.

A bunch of us are still going to do it- it is required reading after all, however there is a debate within this group of whether we should provide this treasure trove of notes to the whole class or just keep it to ourselves.

There are basicaly two things to consider:

1. Some people will spend hours on this, while some will get it instantaneously if it is shared.

2. If it is shared, it fosters a feeling of much needed unity among classmates.

What's your take?

I'm sorry. I'm not really sure what you're asking. Are you saying that those of you who are planning to read the chapters are going to create some sort of study guide or notes that you will share with each other? And that you are wondering whether you should share those notes with those who didn't read the chapters?

Your classmates are adult learners and should be able to accept the consequences of their actions. If they don't read the chapters and the test covers some of that material, it's their loss. If you choose to read the chapters, regardless of whether you feel they're a waste of time, that's your choice.

Frankly, I would not share the notes that you create based on the required reading with classmates who choose to not read the chapters. That's enabling behavior. It isn't academic dishonesty, but it certainly gives the message that it's okay with you if your peers don't do the work.

ETA: There are many ways to promote class unity. Doing the work for people who aren't willing to put in the effort is not one of them.

I don't even understand why anyone in your group wants to share this with the class. I know of two different study groups in my class that have 4 or 5 people in them and they meet every test week. I am not interested in spending my time sitting in one of their study sessions because I don't know that they know how the questions on the test are going to be asked and I go through my own thought process. Some of those groups have shared their notes and I have not found them useful at all. I wouldn't spend anymore time hemming and hawing over this one. If someone wants to join your study group and do all the required reading, then I guess they are more than happy to share in your notes.
