The film: Vaxxed.

Published

At first I wasn't going to write this post since I believe that a film that appears to be (at least in part) based on thoroughly discredited, fear-mongering nonsense should get as little attention as possible.

Then after browsing several anti-vaccine and conspiracist websites I found as I suspected, that this has already exploded and whatever I write here won't make matters any worse.

The film 'Vaxxed' is directed by Mr Andrew Wakefield, a former physician who lost his medical license after research that he had authored, was found fraudulent (containing as I understand it, both methodological and ethical flaws).

Vaxxed: Tribeca festival withdraws MMR film - BBC News

Just watching the trailer for this film elevated my BP into dangerous territory. How is it that this man keeps promoting the same debunked data to this day? Hasn't it caused enough harm already?

Vaxxed From Cover Up to Catastrophe TRAILER - YouTube

It seems that anti-vaccine proponents span the entire spectrum from sadly misinformed to clearly unhinged. However, no matter what their individual motivation happens to be, they are in my opinion dangerous. We have fought a hard battle against diseases that today are vaccine-preventable. Millions of children have died in the past and some still do, to this day. We don't see much of it in first-world countries due to the success of vaccines. Anti-vaccine proponents seem to believe that the "olden days" were better. I think it's deeply worrisome.

In my escapades around the internet, I've found all sorts of scary blogs, clips and opinions relating to childhood vaccines.

This YouTube clip rather amusingly (in a sad way) has 90 likes and zero (!) dislikes (probably because no rational person would even click on it in the first place). (I'm not sure what this says about me :lol2:)

Doctors Who Discovered Cancer Enzymes In Vaccines All Found Murdered. - YouTube

Anyway this women thinks that nagalese (an enzyme) is added on purpose to vaccines in order to induce autism, cancer and type 2 diabetes in vaccine recipients. And the doctors who discovered this were subsequently murdered  to cover this up. This vaccine tampering seems to be a part of some nefarious population control plot.

(It seems that alpha-N-acetylgalactoseaminidase (referred to as nagalese in the YouTube clip) can deglycosylate vitamin D binding protein (DBP) and DBP plays a role in the immune cascade response. So it seems that alpha-N-acetylgalactosaminidase can interfere with the immune response. While some cancer cells can release alpha-N-acetylgalactosaminidase, I've found no proof that injecting them into humans induces cancers, never mind autism and DMII. I will however admit that I didn't spend an inordinate amount of time researching her theory).

I admit that this last video is a bit extreme. But this woman and other "anti-vaxxers" have one thing on common. They are willing to accept something as true, even when there is no supporting evidence available.

Serious questions:

* Why are some people so vulnerable/susceptible to flawed logic and poor research?

* What can we as nurses/healthcare professionals do to ensure that our patients base their decisions on sound evidence-based facts or at least have the opportunity to do so? Or should we just reconcile ourselves with the fact that a portion of the population will base their decisions on questionable or outright false information, misconceptions and fear?

This has gone beyond the point of ridiculousness. Some posters seem unable -or unwilling - to absorb actual facts. Frightening that some of them were supposedly practicing nurses.

I agree, and I'm taking a break.

It's been proven that he falsified information. Why would he need to do that if he really thought he was on to something? He is a man who was stripped of his license...of course he's going to continue trying to prove his side; of course he wants a following.

There are many people who go against the status quo. This doesn't make them right. He may even truly believe what he's preaching. It doesn't make him right.

And he *still* has people who like him.

Guess there is no helping some people.

The frustrating and frightening thing is that the rare occurrence of a vaccine injury seems to be more important then the many people who are STILL dealing with the effect of diseases contracted before the vaccines for them were developed. They've been forgotten about and pushed to the wayside, because they don't fit the agenda. It's like they want these diseases want to return to their former glory... that or they mistakenly believe they don't have to worry about them, because in their mind they don't exist anymore. People they exist. They still exist in under developed countries. These people immigrate or visit the US. The more people who go unvaccinated, the more there is a possibility of return of these diseases. And while I will continue to vaccinate, as a healthcare professional, it's tough to see people suffer from something that is so unnecessary and that could have been prevented.

Hi BCgradnurse,

You wrote: "Jenny McCarthy is not a medical professional and I don't know what her claims are to "healing autism". I'm sure she is a loving mother and cares deeply about her child, but I'm doubtful she "cured" his autism. She has no credibility with me, and with many in the world. I don't know who she got to praise her book, but I'd have my doubts about their credentials."

When you wrote that you didn't know what her (Jenny McCarthy's) claims are, to healing autism, I would think you don't know what her claims to healing her son's autism are, because you haven't yet read her book: Louder Than Words: A Mother's Journey in Healing Autism.

Let's both see the film "VAXXED", and let's both read Jenny McCarthy's book, Louder Than Words: A Mother's Journey in Healing Autism.

THEN, you'll know what her claims are, and you'll be better able to attack her claims, if you end up not agreeing with her. On the other hand, what if you end up agreeing with Jenny? Would you say so...?

Are you receiving any compensation for constantly repeating the name of the book and the author over and over again? because it sure looks that way to me. Otherwise wouldn't you just say Read the book or something like that?

Are you trying to increase the number of hits a search engine gets on this book by finding the phrase you are carefully using exactly each time?

It seems that those who oppose vaccinations put their fingers in their ears and sing "la la la" when examples of vaccine preventable disease or deaths are brought up. Do they they think it can't happen to them or their children? Sadly, the liklihood of the unvaccinated acquiring a vaccine preventable disease is going to increase as vaccination rates go down. I truly feel for those children who are being put in harm's way. I also am very saddened by the lack of compassion I'm seeing towards those affected by diseases that could have been prevented with a vaccine. It's the epitome of self-centeredness.

Hi Extra Pickles,

Wow. That's a great idea! Never thought of it before! Thank you! (Just being facetious here).

But, nope. I don't get compensation, period for anything I write, because speaking "truth to power" is reward enough for me. I guess I'm just not into making money that way.

I can't wait until "VAXXED" the film, comes here to Colorado! I'd like to judge it myself, not from heresay. And, no, I don't get any "kickback" from "VAXXED", either.

A vaccine injury is terrible. It is. And I feel for those effected. But federal law does mandate that we provide documentation warning people of this before they get the vaccine. If you do not read that documentation, then that's on you. Everyone wants a 100% guarantee, but that is absolutely impossible. Human bodies are WAAAAAY too complicated to give that kind of guarantee. Human bodies continue to do things no one could've ever predicted. No one knows how one of going to react to anything until they try it. One won't know if they have a peanut allergy until the eat a peanut butter sandwich or a doctor conducts an allergy test which not a lot of people seek out on a regular basis. The only thing they can do is make them as universal as they can.

Good idea, but nowhere near "sexy" enough for Hollywood. Many people don't want the truth. They want something to shake their fist at.

I hope all those who are listening to "heresay", will be brave enough to see the film "VAXXED" for themselves, instead of taking the easy way out--listening to rumor mongering. I also hope the film will be free, to encourage nurses, doctors, parents and parents of vaccine injured children, and others to see FOR THEMSELVES, what the film has to say.

I also want to read Jenny McCarthy's book, entitled : Louder Than Words: A Mother's Journey in Healing Autism.

According those familiar with the movie on both sides of the issue there is no new information on the subject being presented in the film, so what is it that you feel people are avoiding by not seeing the movie version of the well debunked propaganda we're already very familiar with?

I am convinced that we are dealing with a troll here, who has nothing useful to add to the conversation but delights in stirring up trouble. Perhaps we should just close this thread for good. It's a shame.

Dear Munroe,

Nobody on allnurses.com has said that they have seen the film, "VAXXED", so it seems (correct me if I'm wrong) that you are basing your opinions on heresay, --unless you personally HAVE seen the "VAXXED" film. Have you?
