I am planning on getting my haircut just before I start classes. I am just wondering what people thought was the best sort of hairstyle to have

I have to ask...what is a plait? And a snood???

Plait is Australian/British for a braid.

A snood is a cloth or net than can cover the whole head or, like I wore it, capture hair at the nape of the neck. I tried posting a picture of it but apparently that brought my post to over 188,000 characters, so here's a link. Mine had black netting and a navy bow (to go with my navy and white houndstooth dress and starched white collar, cuffs and belted apron. Bear in mind that this was in the early 90's, and be kind!

reading all these posts makes me feel like the odd one out! my standard cut is layers-angles (above shoulder) - w/ side bangs that dont reach my nose when freshly cut. i dont like the way i look in long hair so i keep it shoulder length w/ cuts q3 months. to school i wear it down-ironed daily (my vanity) and to clinicals, i wear it (ironed cuz of frizz) in a pony, usually with scunci no slip jaw clips and some bobby pins. dress code in my school is longer than shoulder has to be tied back. i tie it back even if shorter just because i can't have it in my face when doing stuff.

i usually do something similar to this:

or a sock bun, or a low pony tail with a headband. (although we have a "no hair touching the collar" rule as well, ive never had anything said to me about it."

i have dealt with a lot of demented patients and have never had one wrap my ponytail around my hand in an effort to attack me.. now i HAVE been bitten, scratched, and punched-- but no hairstyle can really prevent that.

I have long hair that is almost to the mid of my back. The thought of cutting it is tempting, but at the same time I have been so patient with letting it grow out! I have gotten it cut up to my ears before, but always regretting short hair cuts. I think I am just going to keep my hair in a basic pony tail and pin my bangs up so that they don't pose any problems.

I say don't cut it! I do the same thing...grow it out to mid-back, get antsy, and then cut it off. ALWAYS end up regretting it. Currently I'm growing it back out from a chin length bob and it is just below my shoulders.

Short hair is cute, but for me it is more high maintanence than a long style that I can throw in a pony or bun. Short hair needs regular trims and time in the AM to style, and I get up early enough already :)

goodness my hair is so curly and i am a chronic migraine sufferer and i get a headache if someone even suggests a tight bun...ugh...good news is even though my hair reaches my bra strap when straightened...it never touches my shoulder when curly...teehee.

im gonna go with either the southern tease bun or the sock bun on clinical days

Yea I'm in the same boat as you I have nautural curly hair and there is only so much you can do with it... lol

There are 3 popular hairstyles at my hospital. One is to make a side part and then french braid your bangs, with the braid across your head, and then tied in a low ponytail. The other is to twist your bangs into a pompadour and pin with bobby pins, and then make a high ponytail with the rest of your hair. Obviously you need long hair for this. I also see a lot of ponytails with the tail looped around and tucked into the elastic so that no hair hangs down.

I am really tempted to chop my hair because it goes to mid-back and is thick/heavy, but the BF has been bringing up marriage (!) lately. So I am holding off just in case!
