Thats it I give up!!!!!!!

I just can not believe it!!!! I give up!!!!! (long)

Not sure what is wrong with me, but I absolutely can find a job that I think is worth doing. I have s-----d myself more times than I can count.

I had accepted a job at a psych hospital only to be dissappointed in administration and how they cut us so short which put us in danger each and every shift not to mention ratios.

So I accepted another job at an ltc facility as night charge. The pay was excellent and after I started I found out why. They cant keep a nurse on that shift for the life of them. So I trained for 5 days, decided that the pay, the 38 mile drive and my license on the line was just not worth it.

So I called the facility I just left to see if I can come back. Why is beyond me! Did I really think anything had changed in the 10 days I had been gone? No, it only got worse.

I worked the night shift last night and what I was told by my fellow nurse floored me. I did not think administration could sink any lower, but they did.

Last week two nurses were injured. One was punched in the face by an adolescent. Then the other nurse was ambushed as she made rounds. Apparently two of the adolescents (same one who punched other nurse) waited for her to come down the hall and then threw a blanked over her, proceeded to take her badge and med room keys. She fought her way out of the blanket and the the two adolescents each took their turn slapping her across the face.

This only gets better, then the two adolescents could not sleep that night so at 3am administration let them stay up and watch a movie!!! Can you believe it, nothing was done about the attacks!!!

I am beside myself with frustration and anger over this whole situation.

I think I am through with nursing, there are absolutely no good places to work:(

I am very sorry for the situation you have stumbled upon. It is so frustrating to put yourself in danger to only find that no one cares or appreciates anything.

I would tell you to annoymously call the Board of Nursing and report the incident, also speak to your DON and discuss the issues at hand.

An RN should never do rounds by herself on a psych unit, there should be an aide, or fellow nurse to accompany. I have dealt with psych patients and I understand your grief.

as for you, i understand your frustration but there are many more types of nursing to choose from, lots more facilities to check out. are you free to travel? that might be of interest.

here is just a short list of nursing jobs for you to consider.

military nurse

school nurse (public, private, colleges) (tuition benefits, good hours

if you have kids)

summer camp nurse (take your kids with you for free, give you time

to think over the summer, see a new place)

insurance company nurse (i guess this is case management, qa,

qi,

workers' comp)

nurse at a company that has nothing to do with nursing; i can't

remember what you call this but you'd work in employee health, run

a wellness program (teaching employees about diet, quit smoking, bp

checks, on the job injuries or other emergencies)

nurse for movies, tv if you are in la or ny (hard to get these jobs)

telephone triage

md's office

outpatient (clinic dealing with psych if that is what you like)

np

instructor (bsn suffices for clinical instructor, i think)

home health

dialysis

correctional facilities (juvenile hall and/or adults, males and/or

females; you'd be safer because the inmates are not allowed to run

the show and there is still a strong component of psych about it, as

you might imagine - lots of mentally ill, homeless, dual diagnosis, etc.

folks in jail and prison; counties, states, federal and private prisons

are all possibilities for employments;

prison ward at a government hospital

va nurse (or, er, med/surg, icu, rehab, psych, outpt clinics) (va

pays the best of any employer where i am and you can work

anywhere in the nation and maybe overseas or in our territories

local or state health department

wound care/ostomy nurse

iv nurse

start your own nursing related business - a staffing agency,

home health agency, med transcription, legal nurse

consultant, scrubs store, work for the nursing journals, start

another nursing bulletin board (no, i didn't really say that)

do you like working with peds, ob, babies?

missionary nurse

i know there are more. go to the tab above here on allnurses called specialty and see if you don't get some ideas.

since the original poster is an lpn she/he would not be qualified for a lot of those jobs.

That's awful, I agree file reports. Also, I'll bet the facility is responsible to insure the safety of employees, it sounds as if they are being negligent in that regard. I would seek legal help.

Sometimes you have to give up a little to get better. A little less pay for a better environment. I think id look at going back to the GI lab or clinics you have been at before. Some people arent cut for LTC or psyc nursing. I know i wouldnt be. I love my med/surg/ortho and im not sure what state you are in but not all have stopped hiring LPN's in the hospitals. Keep looking.

I agree with others' comments to encourage you to keep looking for a nursing job which may be a better "fit" for you. Your efforts to work hard to complete an LPN program and earn your nursing license are important, so it would be a loss of your investment to quit nursing after apparently working only a couple of years.

Part of the "package" of doing professional nursing work is that there are some risks. I was kicked in the stomach by a post-op patient who started going in DT's, even though we had a doctor's order and had restraints on this big guy--thank goodness I only had a bruise from that incident but it really made me mad! Some nurses such as me can press on after negative work experiences, and some nurses throw in the towel. Some of us retired nurses wonder if maybe the reason there is currently a national shortage of nurses is because now there are more low risk professions open to women?

i feel you. take a time out. i'm about to go see a career counselor myself. i need to understand how i can make this bizarre profession work within my self-concept and expectations. nursing has been like a really bad marriage for me. you stay for the children but, there is a breaking point. find some time for calm reflection. do something unusual... get back in touch with you... river rafting, horse back riding, motorcycles, small airplanes, cliff diving, scuba diving, sailing, boating, nude sun bathing, bungee jumping, sky diving, traveling - thailand?

I love the thing about nursing being like a bad marriage, so true at times. My father who is now retired but had a great business career said he came to the conclusion near the end of his career that work is only part of your life and that you need to find things outside of work that you like to do because these days work is just really brutal a lot of the time. Just my thoughts.

I have thought about this and I can honestly say that I have worked many different specialties and nurses do not get the respect they so deserve.

I think I have had my fill of these types of positions. I really want out!!! I went back to nursing thinking well, I have this degree so I should use it. I am at my wits end! At this moment at this time I do not want to be a nurse. I have never been so miserable in my life. I admire those of you who have made lemonaide out of the lemons in your life.

I'm really sorry for the situation; it's certainly a toxic environment.

I agree with the poster who mentioned calling the police about the assaults. No nurse is under any obligation to be battered.

I've been unemployed for quite awhile recently as I felt much the same as you do, and I wanted time to explore the world of nursing to figure out if I could find something better than my previous jobs. I did a lot of reading of threads on AllNurses.com and a lot of internet searching. Interviewed for nursing jobs in new areas and finally accepted a job in a new area. Good luck to you.
