5th take but cali board is asking for requirements

Published

i'm on my 5th try. sent out a re-application for the exam and was waiting for my letter saying that i can retake it already. received a letter from the california board of nursing yesterday but it wasn't the usual letter that i get that says i can take it instead it was asking me to submit a copy of my clinical rotation schedule 5 assist deliveries, cord dressing. major minor. i had sent this out way back when i had first applied and now they're asking me this again..i am really confused. its been 3 years since i last applied. graduated in overseas. has anyone encountered this?

I think they have a certain time period within which you have to pass or they may require you to repeat some content......

really?cuz i thought and also heard it from some people that in cali you can take it as many times.. thanks for replying.

California has started enforcing certain requirements recently (Such clinical being completed concurrently with classroom/theory). Frankly I'm surprised that a state permits so many chances to keep taking the NCLEX. Some states it's 2 or 3 tries then you need to go back to school or at least take a nursing refresher course.

A quick search shows that there are a few threads in the international forum discussing this very situation:

i have the same situation.... i graduated in the philippines 2009.. i did not take my local board cuz my visa is goin to be expired. so after graduation i came here in cali, i first took my nclex rn exam august 2011 failed. i reapply november received the letter from BRN dec 19 asking for another requirements.. scrub for cord dressing major minor and delivery assisted. i was so disappointed! =( so i ask my mom which is in my country right now having vacay to go to my school i fax them the clinical cases copy that i completed during the school days but did not submitted them bec i did not took the local board.. so my mom came to school today and the told her that i need to have those copy signed by the nurse supervisor in every cases and the chief nurse of the hospital!! OMG!! i dont know what to do anymore.....my mom need to come here soon and no time for them to fix it and besides its been 4 years now i dont know if those nurses are still working on those hospitals where i took my clinical duty......:crying2:

i am exactly in the same boat as u. its been 4 years since those assists and i didn't even do that part where u have have the chief nurses sign and all that stuff.. and i think just doing that will take probably months i mean who is going to go to all those nurses and have them sign especially from assists or deliveries that happened so many years ago and plus ive been here in the states and those records are proly gone by now or if not they have to go searching for it.. i don't understand why they are doing this. so now, i am looking at other states which do not require that kind of requirement, also no cgfns or toefel. man, this is hard.

Yes, as it was previously provided on the two links above of the concurrency rules being strictly enforced now in CA, with the recent request of updated transcript information, your re-application stands a very high chance of being denied to re-take test, as you can read the frustrations of others who had this happen to them. You're not alone, so sad to say.

Again, this is NOT a new rule(s), not a new requirement, nothing new about it other than it's been in the CA BON policies since 1987 and recently being enforced (as in several other States). It's their law and regulations and as such, they are able to do whatever they feel fits as long it's in writing and simply must comply with them.

This is irregardless if the BON's granted the ATT even with the policies always there. We should all feel lucky they didn't enforce them so strictly just a few years back or many kabayans would still be likely at home and still waiting for some backer to get them their first hospital job.

Kabayan, you do other have another option at this present time, while nothing wrong with going after the NCLEX-RN again, many rejected applicants are opting to take the NCLEX-PN exam to become an LVN, then hope to pass that, then enroll in an LVN-RN school.

While you mentioned possibly looking into other States, go to the World forum site and under the Nurse Registration, you will find a good read on the other States with the same concurrency rules enforcement.

As just know, that while you may be able to get your RN license from another State, there stands the same very high chance that you'll not be able to endorse (transfer) your out of state license into CA. As you will be asked by the CA BON the same exact documentation that will be reviewed by the CA evaluators, those same docmentation that will lead right back to your courses not meeting the concurrency rules.

With regards to the various English proficiency exams, most of the other States will require some kind of exam and a separate process to have your courses evaluated by an outside agency, so plan on several months of that process.

With that in mind, what State do you want to start your nursing career besides in CA? This will help narrow down chasing which State is "best" as there are really no better state other than the one you will want to raise your family in.

One other thing is that while you may submit the requirements asked of you the CA BON will require you provide them with a copy of the local PH license, it's a new requirement of the last year or two. It's been noted others submitted ALL the requirements asked, only to have the CA BON ask for the local license copy, as they will verify such a license exist.

Also just know that just when you think you now have submitted ALL the requirements, you may be asked at the last minute: asked to submit copies of your passport with ALL the pages and ALL supporting stamps. It's a spot checking measure so they check some not all applicants from the Phils area.

This is partly as the CA BON has been finding damaging evidence (it's been in some CA BON reports) that some PH nursing applicants have cheated and lied into getting a license granted, as they found those that submitted false documents (from the streets of Recto), never went to the PH schools and were still in the States when they claimed they were in the Phils, so you partly blamed some of our greedy and cheating kabayans for this mess.

Hi! Came across your post. I just took my 4th time nclex this 01/17. Still waiting for the result. Getting anxious day by day. I stopped t 265. Im stil hoping and praying for a good outcome. Im debating if i should submit a reapplication now. I heard stories about your current situation. So whats your plan? Goodluck in all of your endeavours.

Did you check online? If you pass, your name should be posted by now.Good luck:)

Are you referring to me? If yes, I did checked it. Its not there. (California BON)

Keep your hopes up!!Keep praying.Good luck:)

Thanks for the uplifting words! BTW, i scrolled on your posts and saw that you applied for LVN and recntly passed. Congrats!! I believed you are pinay and graduated bsn over there. My question now is have you tried applying for nclex rn and got denied? The reason being I heard stories about the CA BON getting stricter for foreign grads. So thats one of my fears if I have to reapply again. Thanks for your time!
