Texas Women's University

Did anyone attend TWU for their nursing program, specifically the BSN? I am looking into nursing school and I wanted to know how people liked it.

I think it's up to you. The only reason I would get it is for simplicity...and then get the books from Amazon later on. There are all types of things in that package that you have to buy. For example, we had some skills videos and all types of codes for various things. I can't say I really used them...but they are required. Just know you're going to get a really bad deal as a Jr I. I sold a bunch of my books from Jr I to buy books for Jr 2.

fyi, it's texas woman's university -- maybe someone can get the moderator to change the name of this group.

i noticed that, too. i dont know how to get someone to change it

I have a question for everybody at TWU already. I will be starting in January and was wondering it was completely necessary to get a dual headed stethoscope, like a littman. I have tried ultrascopes out and I like them better. Thanks!

They are pretty much required. There are various reasons as to why you need the stethoscope with a bell. As a J2 you'll be in an OB rotation, and you have to use the bell to listen to the babies heartbeats. In assessment, you'll learn about auscultating for a bruit with the bell, too. No, I honestly very rarely use the bell, but I have had to use it in the past.

I will be a J1 in January - i currently have a ADC stethoscope that came with a BP cuff for about $50. I am hoping this will be sufficient. I do not plan on buying another one until this one proves to not be good enough for my J1 assessments and such.

I don't know anything about brands (I just bought what they told us to), but I think as long as it has a bell and diaphragm, you should be fine!! It does make a difference if you can hear or not, but half the time we never knew what we were listening for anyways :smackingf

How did your orientation end up going? I thought I heard it was last week!

Yes, orientation was last Thursday. It was great! BUT it was very overwhelming to me also. SO much information and so many things to get in order before classes start. The instructors/professors told us to be as ready as possible because we are going to hit the ground running from the start and won't stop till its over. I am scared and excited at the same time. I have been told by so many that if i can make it through the first semester - especially since i am having to take patho and pharm together - that the rest should fall into place. Not that i won't have to study and work hard- but maybe less stress load.

I'm just excited but trying to take advantage of the holiday season with my kids and boyfriend. I am looking forward to a Merry Christmas - i already got my present....admission into nursing school :-)

I know! I remember our orientation. I was SO confused. There are a million things to buy/get done within just a few weeks! It also sucks away any money you have.

That is totally true- you do need to get ready. It really doesn't stop. Ever. "Breaks" are no longer breaks. You are only expected to study during the breaks...not actually do what you're supposed to be doing (spend time with family, relax, etc). Jr I and Sr I are by far the hardest semesters. If you can figure out a good way to manage time, you'll make it through the semester!

I will be a Senior 1 at the Dallas Campus in the Spring. Do you have any advice or commits for me? I was wondering about how many clinicals are there for each class. I think I may be stuck with a Saturday clinical for Adult 2 and was trying to figure out a schedule for my kids. I know I am so glad to have a break. I wish you the best of luck for S1.

much easier to hear murmurs w/ a bell, too!

I graduated from TWU in 1978. received a great education there and felt very prepared after graduation. But I also worked at one of the hospitals in the Texas Medical Center in Houston as a student nurse during my last year of school.

I am not sure what goes on at the other 2 locations but in Houston it was great and being in the Texas Medical Center our education opportunities were limitless. Diane
