Hello everyone,

I have a question regarding Scott & White. Do they only hire new grads into their internship positions? I would LOVE to do an internship; however, the next critical care one is available in January. I just became a licensed RN in Texas in March and I will be moving down there until May. I honestly cannot wait until January to get a job :( I have been trying to apply to other positions on their website that all say minimum/no experience but I am not having any luck and I have no idea why! Any pointers? I am a new grad with no nursing experience; however, I worked as a nurse technician for over a year. I know they have nurse techs in Texas. I figured that would make me more marketable but I guess not!

No, Scott & White doesn't only hire new grads into their internship program. I'm graduating in May, had an interview on Scott & Whites Med/Surg floor last Thursday and I got hired!!! I start in June and I'm so excited. The only tip I have is apply, apply, apply. I applied for like 5 jobs at Scott & White and only got a call back for the one I got. The job I applied for did happen to be on the career site for quite some time, so they may have been eager to get someone hired! Good luck! Oh and I also got two offers at Trinity Mother Frances in Tyler, TX. You may want to try them but hurry and it helps to hassle the HR department...just a little!

Ahhh I'll be living in Killeen...Tyler is too far (I will not drive 166 miles/day to work!) but thanks anyway! And congrats on getting a job :) I guess I'll just have to keep applying!

I just got hired in the ICU internship for June at Scott & White. I don't even graduate until June (they are willing to accomodate me with my graduation date so I'll start about 2 weeks after everyone else in the internship). I applied early (in February) and the deadline was the last Friday in March.

Even though the ICU internship won't hire again until January, they still have postings for other internships, particularly med-surg. That may not be where you want to start out at but just getting a foot in the door would be great. Also, I know they are having an internship on the Observation Unit (STC-2) start up in August so you should look for that. What I did was set up an email alert for the nursing positions and got an alert every time a new posting came up that may be interesting to me (I also checked the website religiously every day).

Also, are you out of state? I set up a shadowing experience at S&W last month during my spring break and I went down to Texas (I'm from Jersey). The recruiter K.B was very helpful -- I suggest you contact her. She asked what were my top 3 choices and I got 2 hours to shadow in the ER, 2 hours in the ICU and 2 hours on the Observation unit. I didn't get the ER internship (it was my 3rd choice), the Observation Unit internship doesn't start until August (it was a very nice floor -- a cross between ER and med-surg -- my 2nd choice) and I got the ICU position (everyone remembered me from the month before and I'm sure that showed how dedicated I was to getting the position).

I also have a year and a half experience as a tech/nursing assistant (nursing assistant on a cardiac and ICU floor for a year and 7 months as an ER tech) and that definitely does help.

All I can say is DO NOT GIVE UP! If you want something bad enough, you'll go after it relentlessly. I did and I got exactly what I wanted. GOOD LUCK!

Thank you! Right now I live in Ohio but I am moving to Texas in 3 weeks. I opted out of an RN license in Ohio and just got my license in Texas.

I got a call to set up an interview for the ICU internship that starts in June, but I had to decline because they wanted me to fly down there for the interview. I couldn't schedule during the available times they had because I was already working and I also couldn't afford a nearly $500 plane ticket to Texas (though I didn't tell them that). The guy I spoke to was very honest with me and told me that if I were to get hired in another position in the hospital, I can just wait until the January one starts up and that my chances were much higher into getting into the January one. Basically, he was telling me not to spend my money lol. That was the only call back I got from S&W, though :(

How did you set up an e-mail alert with S&W? I didn't see that option on their website. I'll also look for the STC-2 internship. I think I applied to that floor, but not to the actual internship. Do you know what exactly the STC-2 unit is? I know it is an observation unit, but is it more along the lines of psych patients or patients who are going through ETOH-withdrawal/DT's, drug OD's, etc?

I will contact K.B. and set up a shadowing experience. Would I be able to talk to her about job opportunities as well? (kind of like a mini-interview, then maybe she can alert the hiring managers to pull my application lol).

Thank you and CONGRATS to you on getting the ICU internship!!! How exciting :)

Thanks! But I actually decided to go for the other job in Tyler just because I fell in love with the area  The job pays significantly lower than S&W but I'm stoked that I don't have to move to Temple, lol. The job I was offered (Staff Nurse- 7 North Med-Surg (nights)) position should be opening back up pretty soon. One of you might want to try and snag that one up cause they seemed pretty eager to get someone hired! Good luck everyone!!!

Oh, and I think you had to set up the job status alert when you first applied for the job. It gave an option to create a log in with a user name and password, which allows you to log back in to check the status of your application.

No, I totally understand about not wanting to pay the $500 plane ticket. Mine was a little over $350 but that's because I made it right after they contacted me and I did it for the last interview date. But, you're on your way down there for good so no worries.

I definitely agree with whoever you spoke with. You should try to get hired into any position and then try to switch over for the January internship. And you only need 6 months...that's awesome. Most places want you there in that position for a year before transferring!

How did you set up an e-mail alert with S&W? I didn't see that option on their website.

You won't see the option right away. While Bridgette is right that you have to sign up to apply for a job, you don't have to sign up for an alert. You don't even see it right away. Sign in and then do a job search. In the "keywords" box, put in "Intern". Click on the "Nursing" category. Then, don't click on search. Click on SAVE SEARCH. Another page will come up that will say enter your email address to be alerted for these type of jobs. Now, anytime you sign in, you'll see the "Alerts" tab and you can run a search on those terms. I just deleted mine since I don't need it anymore:yeah:I also did one for "Graduate Nurse" in the keywords box. And now, you'll have an email every day with the jobs that fit those categories. But, I still went on every day to search. Just in case...:lol2:

I'll also look for the STC-2 internship. I think I applied to that floor, but not to the actual internship. Do you know what exactly the STC-2 unit is? No...no psych. It's mainly chest pain and those people who come in and just need to wait for test results to find out if they can be discharged or admitted. It's a really fast-paced floor, the patients don't really stay there longer than 23-48 hours. Check out some of my posts. I think I spoke with a girl on here who works there as an intern and she described the floor. K.B told me they aren't starting that internship until August so the position probably won't be posted until the summer.

I will contact K.B. and set up a shadowing experience. Would I be able to talk to her about job opportunities as well? (kind of like a mini-interview, then maybe she can alert the hiring managers to pull my application lol).

I can't see why not. See if you set up an informational interview with her and when you get there in person with her, ask about the positions and setting up a shadowing experience. They apparently have students and people all the time at S&W since it's a teaching hospital -- coming to shadow. So, it should be no problem. She was very nice.

Thank you and CONGRATS to you on getting the ICU internship!!! How exciting :)

Thank you!!! It hasn't hit me yet...maybe AFTER I pass my final tonight!:yeah:

Keep me posted!!

Actually, it won't be an alerts tab. It will be the SAVED SEARCHES tab. Click on that and the saved searches (alerts) will come up for you to run or delete.

Yeah, as much as it would be nice to have a job already lined by the time I get down there, it will probably be easier for me to find once I am actually there. 3 more weeks!

Sounds like something I would be interested in! I applied for a position on the STC-2 unit, but just for a regular position (not an internship because it's not up yet and like you said it probably won't be posted until the summer). The position said minimum/no experience so I'm hoping I'll get a call within the next few weeks or so. If I can get into the August internship for this, that would be great, but I really need a job. I graduated in December, became an RN in March...I don't know, I just can't wait that long I guess!

Maybe I'll do this when I'm finally there. Do you have her contact information by chance? If so, can you PM me her information?

Haha good luck on your final! And I will! Thank you so much for filling me in on everything :)

Hey Melosaur! Just got a notification for the STC-2nurse intern position! Don't know why since I thought I deleted my notifications! Lol! But, it's up on the career site so definitely apply!!

By the way, I got an 89 on my final! :)

Hi Bridgette j, I was wondering if you mind sharing what it was about Tyler that you fell in love with? Thanks!

Hi Rolliepolee...cute name by the way :)

I loved the atmosphere and the people at the hospital better at Tyler, when compared to my experience in Temple. I am from the city (Dallas, TX) and Tyler seemed more city-like, even though Tyler is still a very rural area. There was a little "traffic" on my way to do my drug screening and I was strangely excited. Tyler is also closer to my family...

That being said, I actually changed my mind and ultimately decided to go with Scott & White after all! I had already accepted the job at Trinity Mother Frances and had to call back and decline the offer. After talking with my family, classmates and clinical instructors I felt like Scott & White in Temple was the better place to begin my nursing career. My ultimate goal is to work in Parkland Hospitals ER and I think Scott & White will better prepare me to do so. I secretly wish Scott & White was in Tyler, TX instead of Temple though  Tyler felt more like home but I'm sure Temple will grow on me. I'm going to Temple this weekend to find an apartment!
