An employer can get rid of a bad nurse , they simply have to prove " just cause ",this means that managment has to follow it's policies and applicable law , surely even a bad nurse ( BTW who decides who is a bad nurse ) deserves to know what they are accussed of , then answer the allegation.

Its easy to get into a union , the hard part is getting your employer to agree with you that a union would be a good thing, for you ( if they agree with you , I would look more closely at the union your looking at). If you are in a union hospital you can arrange for your dues to be paid to a charity ,if you meet the legal criteria for opting out of paying dues to the union . Which only seems fair , if you expect to have the same pay and conditions as the rest of the employees at that facility.

Effectively if you are in Texas , a nurse and in a union you do not work ? You would be blackballed .

Why would I want to work for the government ,when I can work for a facillity , that cares more for it shareholders than ensuring safe staffing for its patients ?( irony)

Well if your in texas, and get fired your going to be blackballed anyway by group one.Depends on where you worked.(dallas area)

Do you think unions will be able to stand up for us against the government? Have you ever been to a VA hospital or heard the stories of why vets are paying for care when the VA will supply the care? While I have never been to a VA hospital, there are many news stories and a few clients that have shared with me about the level of care the government has provided for them. Why would they treat us better than the men who fought for us? :twocents: for what it is worth now days.

Yes , I have lived and worked in such an enviroment .

The best places to work , in my experience are those in which management and labor respect each other and work harmoniously for the benefit of each other . NO that is not Utopia , it is possible and where it happens , you have found a great place to work . If you can achieve this without a union fine , but my experience is that when the managment ethos changes the work relationship changes ( rarely for the better , of the employee's ).

Would really love to work in such a place. Time will be the true tell of how all of this works out.

Here, Here!!

I have worked in non-union hospitals for the last 6 yrs. I have enjoyed my time in them. But.......the economy has changed and budgets are tight. Hospital systems are forced to make some "hard choices".......And this is where Unionized systems have protection.

I would have NEVER thought a hospital would be allowed to reduce an ENTIRE team of RN's wages with ONE days notice. And that is exactly what just happen last week....... And what could we (the nurses) do? Jobs are very few and far between in Portland Oregon right now........hence I am relocating in the coming months to Texas. I know I won't be able to be a Flight RN, but there are a number of ICU jobs. And my family will be able to find work......hopefully. My co-workers are stuck. They own homes here.........

I have learned a hard lesson in union vs. non-union. :) It is my belief that until you and your co-workers are subjected to horrendous changes, you do not truely appreciate what "organized negotiation" can do for you............it's all about protection, "life insurance" you could say.........yeah, and you have to pay dues.
