I have several positive comments to make about being unionized and for myself, it is worth the 40 bucks that I pay each month. But I am not about to cram CNA down into anyones throat. I just simply encourage those who are interested to visit the CNA website. We benefit greatly as members and I am a content member. I'm getting ready to move to TX from CA and it is going to be different. Starting with the ratios and cut in pay. But all is good. I can adapt and I am looking forward to my new position. Being around family is more important.:wink2:

Maybe a cut in pay

But no earthquakes

cheaper housing

worse schooling

Ten dollars an hour cut in pay, No earthquakes here in Sac, much better enviroment for my daughter in TX and better schools there. I think I am more concerned about my work enviroment.

Have you checked out how close to the bottom, nationally, Texas schools are.

Having worked in both environments, you feel less afraid to speak up for patients and yourself because they can't just fire you without cause like they can in non union buildings. Even if they try you have major recourse and since they already KNOW that you have recourse they don't try alot of silly crap. IE Group One would have been stopped cold in a union bldg. Being from Fl (non union state) I never thought anything of it until I started travel nursing and got a feel for unionized nursing. I love it.

That makes good sense. I know a nurse here in Dallas that she and a couple of other ICU nurses stood up for the care of the patients - they thought the ratio was too high to provide quality care - they have really been blackballed from several systems it seems like for causing a stir about this. I guess a union would have helped them for sure!

Pageantnurse- I guess I haven't figured this whole thing out. I don't know how to reply to a private message, don't see a reply button anywhere???

Anyway, I do apologize this is the only way I knew how to reply to you...

I would be happy to send you the two books- if you want to send me another private message with your email address perhaps we can figure it all out that way.

ddooser, I think you will find that if you get on with the right hospital, you will like Texas. True, the heat is unbearable but there are many benefits to living here.

FYI- Texas is ranked 26th in terms of education. I'd hardly call that "near the bottom". Good luck!

Thanks LabCat. I'm looking forward to starting my new position and moving back home close to family. I am very impressed with the CyFair school district and the school my daughter is attending is an exemplary one.

I live not too far from there (at least by Houston standards :) )

I've heard good things about the area.

I would hardly call that near the top. And Texas is one of the top richest states in America, has to be. Look at all they spend on sports. Personally I would consider being halfway to the top or halfway to the bottom, as being rather sad. That does not make it in my belief system

Actually, Texas is only the 32nd wealthiest state in the union. In other words, 31 states are richer than Texas. Some people forget about the abject poverty in the border towns, which also happen to be exploding in population. The low per capita income of many of the border towns drops Texas' rank in terms of wealth.
