I am communicating with others, to communicate with ones self gets you a psych evaluation where I work. Did I say that to you or to myself. Now I am confused. Or maybe I know exactly whats going on.Hmmmmm

I do, it makes perfect sense to me. I understand completely what I am saying.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch. . .

Texas nurses are unionized at a Houston hospital. . .

I wonder what type of feelings those nurses have about unions given that they have worked in both environments? It would be interesting to hear their thoughts after a year or so on board with the union.

I was in California a long time ago, working as an RN. Unionized Hospital with SEIU. I was even an Union Representative. It was in this position where I found how little unions thought of nurses and nursing, they thought strictly of the power and finances they controlled.

I currently live in CA and enjoy the benefits that the CNA as afforded us. We just received a new contract last fall and I received back pay, our retirement remains protected, the ratios are awesome and I make a decent wage. The CNA is contiuously bargaining on our part and here is an example. GO CNA. I really hope that Texas RN's pull together and unionize. The info that I received from someone that was at the conference, is that TX has strong and determined RN's and unionization is inevitable. Here is the current email that I have received from my union. Most of the time, we do not have a dedicated break RN in my unit and if we do, it is a float from an outside unit. I feel that the dedicated RN should be a member of our unit. The are many other bargaining points. This is just one of them.

Sorry, guys for some reason it is not showing the full document. I'll try later. But please visit the website. I feel that the CNA represents us well and we have certainly benefited from their efforts on our behalf.

This is only my opinion and not worth much, but I am opposed to unions on many levels, and one is that it smacks of unprofessionalism to me. I am a Texas nurse who will change jobs if a union comes around. They have all but ruined the CA nursing community - look how many contract nurses they have to get to come in! Also, there are a lot of foreign nurses in Houston who feel alienated from the general nursing population anyway. That may account for the union acceptance there. Thank goodness Texas is a "right to work" state, which means that employees are not required to join the union even if it represents some of the other employees.

Question- when you work for a union hospital, who pays the union dues? Is it the nurses? How much does that typically cost per month?

I can get some decent golfing in for that, or save it up and do some sky diving.

I recently had a situation that demonstrates my love of unions in nursing. HR was "looking" for money in the budget and decided to cut the OT for anything over 8 hours in a day rule. AFTER we had worked our doubles (8 doubles in a pay period for me personally). So all of our checks were short (mine by 500 bucks). The union rep called and all of the unionized nurses were issued handwritten checks by the end of business and the pool nurses who are NOT in the union were just screwed. Moreover, they CAN'T change the OT policy mid contract so the union nurses will continue to get their OT money. Gee, I wonder why the facility now tells applicants there are NO FT positions but tell you come on pool, I can give you FT hours. Some pool nurses get 96+ hours per pay period. Hmmm. The 60 bux a month are well worth the money saved and the 5,000 per fiscal year for school of any kind and unlimited free CEU's and CPR. :D Viva 1199C !!
