Terrible interviewer, what the...?

Published

I just had an interview and it went terrible!

My interviewer never introduced himself/herself. This person walked through the lobby and said "Follow me!", walked me to a public area where he/she asked me a few questions and text messaged on their phone while I answered. He/she also talked to "friends" across the room while I was answering his/her questions.

This person obviously isn't interesting in hiring me and wasted both of our time.

Has anyone else encountered this while interviewing?

Hi KATRN78,

Sorry you had a bad interview. I had a similiar experience. I really was looking forward towards getting a job at this particular place and I had gone there every week for two months. I finally got a call for the interview and I started preparing since I researched and knew they did PBI interviews. Well I arrived at the hospital and went to the area where I was told to meet the nurse manager. I saw a couple of nurses on the floor and one stated she would call the nurse manager, that she was in the hospital somewhere. I was told to have a seat in the breakroom, I waited 30mins and no one came in to say anything. One of the CNA's that I saw when I came in for the interview walked in to the breakroom and stated you are still here waiting???? I just looked and smiled and stated yes, she stated I would be mad, and I was upset because I was prepared and saw this as a complete disappointment. A little over an hour the nurse manager shows up and invites me to her office, she stated she was with a patient. OK I understand , we have to do that sometime. The kicker is she stated that she didn't know she had a interview today and that she wrote it down wrong on her calendar, she had wrote it for tomorrow. Anyway she was totally unprepared, she had nothing out to go by as far as asking questions and scoring them.( FYI I had gone on another interview and knew she was suppose to be scoring.) After she asked her questions she called her RNs in to meet me and they ask some questions. Scenerio questions, again totally unprepared and I felt like it was a waste of time because I had already made up in my mind that I wasn't going to get the job, by the look the RN gave me when I walked in for the interview and the way the NM let her take over the interview... ***. I really feel if the NM was not prepared she should have rescheduled the interview.. I really don't feel that I had a fair chance for the position due to her lack of prepardness.. However I still sent out a thank you email and note... I just don't think it's fair to us nurses who are prepared and ready for these interviews and when we get there shh like this happens... The only thing you can do is when you make it to that point be a better NM and treat others how you would want to be treated. I think some people forget that along the lines somewhere... Smile it will be ok. You probably don't want to work for someone like that anyway...

You're totally right.

And you make a good point, I do not want to work for someone like that anyway. However, I do want to work. Ugh.

I am pretty annoyed. Its an hour away. I drove one hour each way just to stand in a lobby for 30 minutes and then be ignored for another 10.

Apparently in "nurse manager school" (haha) they didn't teach this person professionalism.

Yes; I also had the same experience. Went for an interview and the Director of Care kept me waiting for 45 mins. She went through the interview as fast as she could, meanwhile I was in my mind saying --- I do not want to work with disorganized people like this ---. She offered me a job but I turned the offer down, moved on

Oh, my personal fave (not in nursing, BTW) was the one where the interviewer introduced herself and said (dead serious here) - "Well, let's get this over with...".

Yeah.

Guess she figured she was doing me a favor having me drive for an hour and a half (round trip) plus prep time for a "practice" interview.

And, I'm the one that was out of work for 2 1/2 years?!? :icon_roll

Hello, glad to say something on your question.

that's really sucks for the interviewer, if you are confident enough, and feel unfair for the result, go and talk to their big manager, and ask for the interview.

once i had a similar or worse experience, i was called at 2pm, i was earlier , i was waited there 45 minutes, i was sooooooooo bored sitting in the public area staffs looking at me. Finally, interviewer came and said to follow her, she did not applozise for wasting my time. Finally she said me whether i have certificate third in aged care, I said I have higher qualifications. She said wait a minute, i will go and check your resume. She left the room and came back after another 15 minutes. She brought application form too. she said me to fill up the form and left the room again. After another 20 minutes she came back and asked whether I have finished , she said if so i can go. I really wanted to tell her to go to hell, as she wasted my money, time.

Specializes in critical care.

If they can't treat you right in the interview, they sure as hell aren't going to treat you right as an employee. The interview (IMO) is the first impression that sets the stage for the entire working relationship. We work our tails off to nail that first impression as the job seeker. They should work to nail it as well, if they truly want you as an employee and respect the efforts you made to be there. If the employer can't even respect your time, they clearly won't respect you as an employee.

Update:

I made a complaint to the person above this nurse manager. He took the complaint seriously. Today, 2 other people called me and asked me questions about the interview. They were both very apologetic. One of those people was the ceo of the hospital. He offered me another interview with someone else but for the same unit. I thanked him and stated that while I appreciate that offer, I am not interested in working under this same nurse manager. The ceo gave me his direct number and told me to call him in the future if I am interested in another position in another unit.

My jaw hit the ground. I did not expect anyone to give a darn or believe me.
