Nurses at St Vincent’s in Massachusetts are in their eighth week of a strike against the Tenet-owned hospital, demanding safe staffing and better working conditions. Tenet, which made more than $90 million in profit in the first quarter of this year,  is putting a huge amount of money into travelers because they know nurses in their other facilities will do likewise if the St Vincent’s strike succeeds. The St Vincent’s last strike in 2000 resulted in improved pay and conditions.

Thanks to the California Nurses Association and the Massachusetts Nurses Association for donations to the strike fund. Especially appreciated since the nurses are not represented in their negotiations by the MNA.

Update: Tenet has responded c a new staffing proposal, details not specified but reportedly reflecting similar contract language at  nearby UMass Hospital. Negotiations resume tomorrow (Weds May 5) with the union saying they are pleased that the hospital is coming to the table.  Stay tuned.

Tenet left Philadelphia market in 2018  -- nurses  had unionized with Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals.  Next owner, American Academic, closed Hahnemann 2yrs later and sold St. Christopher's Childrens last year.   Hope things workout better for this nurses union.

What does "sued of existence" mean?

Sorry, I meant to say sued OUT of existence, bankrupt due to the negligence they showed in their New Orleans hospital

I don't get it. Hospitals would rather pay exorbitant amounts for travelers than pay the staff that's there. It's a control issue. Let me also add, Tenet has a track record of being trash.

Today’s (5/10/21) Boston Globe has a huge full-page ad from St. Vincent’s whining that they have made repeated concessions and the big bad MNA keeps turning them down. Experienced nurses will know that the “concessions” they are touting don’t amount to much and give Tenet waaaay too much wiggle room to still screw the nurses. For example, they say they will OK ratios of 1:4 and 1:5 “in med surg” ....but dollars to donuts that’s counting charge, supervisors, and others, leaving the bedside nurses still at 1:6-8. And nothing there about safer ratios for critical care, laboring mothers, etc. And golly, they say, the nurses say this strike is all about staffing and imagine, these nurses want more money too! And other benefits! A shocking concept, eh?

It’s a blatant attempt to undermine strong public support for the nurses. Yes, Tenet’s reputation precedes them. They continue to pay huge money for travelers to break this strike because they know their other hospital nursing groups will go after them if this succeeds. As well it should.

This is what gets me. They are willing to spend the bucks just not on their proven employees. Screw them.

As of today (6/2) the strike is still on. The hospital has begun hiring permanent staff to replace the strikers, who will not get their jobs back later. Still has a lot of travelers earning huge money. The community is behind the nurses and mist nurses will not take those jobs until the strike is resolved.

The community needs to not go to that hospital. Only when their bottom line, money, is affected, will they do better. But then again, Tenet will forever be hot garbage.
