teenagers and pot

Published

I had a worrying interaction a couple of weeks ago, which fits in with a disturbing trend I've noticed with teenagers.

A 16yr old boy was in trouble because of marijuana, and I got chatting with him about it. He genuinely believe it's harmless, but it got worse. He has a cousin and uncle who have battled cancer, and lost. He then said pot helps fight cancer, and he then told me that marijuana is actually good for you.

For all those pro pot people out here, surely you are aware of the dangers of pot and young minds - there is plenty of research to prove that. But what worries me is the growing number of teenagers who feel it is harmless for them. I have also had a couple of other kids say it is actually good for you as well, although this was the first time someone had linked it to fighting cancer.

I often ask the seniors about pot and other drugs, including alcohol, and quite a lot see pot as a healthy alternative to drinking.

I lost the love of my young life due to drinking and driving. Unfortunately, HE was the one driving after consuming a whole lot of alcohol. It was not his normal habit, but was nevertheless a bad decision made while celebrating acceptance to his dream medical school. Thank God he didn't crash into another car; that would have been doubly tragic.

I'm so sorry.

You can think MADD for stuff like that.

We used to be able to drink and drive in Texas and it was never a issue, and this was also back when drinking age was 19. MADD has put so much pressure on police and politicians that drinking and driving has now become a bad thing.

I remember in the mid 80's being able to easily to buy drinks for my wife, age 17 at the time I was 21 never was an issue. BS that restaurants not wanting to serve a underage person with a legal guardian in site, I would tell the restaurant to pack sand........

What an idiotic thing to say. I can't tell if you're actually for real and BELIEVE the asinine things you write, or if you're a caricature a la NOADLS

Omg--- I just don't know what to say. I am a Texan. I was of drinking age in the mid-80s and it was NEVER considered ok to drink and drive. I never saw underaged persons served alcohol

I'm beginning to feel like it's my Texas duty to follow your posts and let everyone know that all Texans aren't like this. Not many, not even a few. Please think! Before you post

I was saddened to learn a few years ago that the teenagers in my area are doing heroin since pot is detectable for so long on a drug test. Much prefer them smoking pot than shooting up heroin. Also have had a few near death in the ICU because of synthetic marijuana. Of course it is not good for youth, but better than these alternatives.

Thank you for pulling out accurate research. Posting articles about lung damage that "may" be true is different than articles explaining the science behind cannabis benefits. Does it make sense that inhaling something into your lungs may cause damage? Yes. So what about those of you who live in NYC and inhale those delicious exhaust fumes on you hour walk to work each day...or San Fran where the pollution is a beauty? I understand the resistance from older generations about marijuana. It is a drug. It can cause cognitive impairment. It may have long term health effects. But its time to turn off the blinders and educate yourself on the benefits that the medicinal properties offer the public. Imagine if we still bled people to rid them of diseases! That daily soda you drink? That fast food stop you just can't resist? Yep, health risks are there! I was closed minded to marijuana because of its reputation. Once you see that child with intractable seizures cut down to one a month and that cancer patient able to take one last trip because his nausea and vomiting is finally controlled you may be more inclined to look further into this schedule 1 drug that appears to terrify the nation. Just make sure you research both pros and cons before you cast judgment.

You beat me to it!

We also use leeches. ;)

I don't know where they are getting this information. I think because it is being termed as "medical Marijuana" they automatically think it is a good thing. Regarding cancer it is just for nausea and aneroxia and helps patients with that; and it is truly amazing for them in that regard. My sister smoked it every day while going through chemo, she was much more able to cope with them chemo side effects.

It's teenagers and pot. Not MMJ per se.
