Hello Everyone! My name is Kelli and I would like to introduce myself to the allnurses.com community! I am taking my TEAS exam on Jan. 28th and I need all of the advice I can get regarding the TEAS exam. I am taking the exam at Cal State and I need a score of 70 percent. How can I do this? I am worried because it has been about 10 years since I took a standardized exam. I am a straight "A" student with a 4.0 GPA. How have you all passed the TEAS and got into the school of your dreams? I am trying to get a BSN degree. I have been studying the ATI testing manual and I took the practice exam at ATI and scored an 80 percent. What else do you suggest I can do these final few days before the exam? What were your experiences with the TEAS exam? Thank you SOOOO much. This information you can share with me means the world to me.
PS-I am studying for the TEAS by myself. Nobody I know is taking it yet!
Ladyoj-How did you do on your test? I am taking version V next week so I was wondering if any of the newer posts were helpful. Thanks for your help!
All I can say is just study the ATI study manual. It is the BEST source out there. I wish I would have studied the science portion a bit more. I was going through the manual and remembered a sufficient amount of questions from the TEAS exam and, of course I got them all wrong. Sucks. I won't know how I did until MONDAY Feb. 1st. I will let everyone know then. The manual is great. That is all you need for the whole exam. I promise.

Re: Teas Study Skills Sticky
Hello, I just finished with my TEAS exam, Thursday, Jan. 28th! I will not get my scores until about Monday when they will be on the TEAS ATI website. I am so excited. I will let everyone know how I did when Monday comes. Please keep me in your prayers. I wanted to post to everyone what I thought of the TEAS exam and what worked for me. I definitley studied the ATI book for the most part. The set-up was the exact same for the exam as it was in the ATI study manual. I also used the McGraw Hill study manual for only the past two days because that is when I received it from a patron on all nurses.com! Thanks, aquizzle! The first part of the exam was reading comprehension. They had short paragraphs with 2-3 questions following each paragraph. Then, they had very simple questions about a speedometer-reading how fast you were going, ex: 90 mph. All you had to do was read it and mark your answer. Reading was probably the best part of the exam for me. I struggled on just one question, and I had to guess. The question was a string of letters with directions telling you to cross off the first and third letters, then add C's to the last two letter, etc. etc. etc. I could not for the life of me figure out which one it was. I think that was an error on the exam if you ask me. I also found another error on the science portion which I will tell you about later when I get to the science section. Anyway, reading was just like the ATI book. They would also have you compare two cars and then pick which one was the better deal, etc. Something like that. Also you had to read a measuring cup and tell the number of ounces of liquid in the cup. Again, very simple and basic stuff.
Math, was pretty simple for me. But again, I have been studying the ATI manual for the math over and over again. The math was just like the ATI manual for me. There was one question that you had to find the probability of a nurse and I could not figure that one out. That was the ONLY one that I got stuck on. Once I calculated the answers, all my calculations were a possiblility. I did not have time to go back and check because the adding and other stuff does take awhile. You have to know mean, median and mode, know how to add up account information, and I=prt, A2 + B2 = C2, those were the only two formulas that you had to know. I can't remember but, I think the Celsius to Farienhite was in the math portion as well. You had to convert one to the other. Again, math was just basic stuff, if you can follow directions and read well, you will not have any problems. I brushed up on my math from the ATI book and that was very helpful.
Science was the third part of the exam. Before we tackled the third and fourth sections of the exam, we had a ten minute break and we were allowed to go to the restroom anytime, but it does cut into your test time. My test was on a scantron and in a booklet. So we were timed by our proctor, not computerized time. Anyway, the science section was the hardest for me. I did guess on a few, but I also studied this time from both the ATI book and the McGraw Hill book. I used this forum for helpful hints which was really the best bet to study from-this forum. The science is so random and I really was freaked out when I saw some of those questions, but the science section is the shortest of the four, so I hope I did not screw up to much there. They asked questions on energy, force, rocks, one on hydrologic cycle, independent and controlled variables, tectonic plates, specific heat, and astronomy. Very random. Stuff that either book really doesn't cover. If you want, you can PM me or post and I will try my hardest to remember exact stuff, but do it quickly because I don't want to forget. I think this was the worst part of the exam for me, but I am still hoping to score in the nineties, and that is how I feel about the exam. Low nineties or high eighties, that is how I feel right now. I will know in a few days and I will post more about that then.
Lastly, the English part of the exam wasn't too bad. I had great English professors so I must give the credit to them and this forum. The exact things that were on my exam were posted right here in this forum. I had to spell foreseeable, average, synonyms for impel and arduous, antynonms for superfluous and vigorous. The ATI book did a great job on covering alot of the areas you had to know. There were context in the sentences and questions about if the sentence was proper or not. Also you had to know simple subjects and proper wording for sentences.
Again, I wish all of you the best of luck. Without this forum, I don't think I would have done as well as I think I did. Also, I don't know what would be the best place to study for the science. I thought that was the worst of the exam. But, only thirty questions and let us say if I missed half, which I don't think I did, I could easily still get in the high eighties. Also, you can miss 17 questions and get a 90 percent.
Oh, I almost forgot, I took the online practice assessment from ATI. That was really interesting. I scored a 79 percent the first time and an 88 percent the second time. I am thankful I paid for these exams as they were really helpful as well. If you can afford to, I would at least buy the ATI study guide because that is what really worked for me. My exam was the 3.0/4.0 version with the purple cover with the lady sitting by her computer. I also must say this forum has been a blessing for me. I would not have done it without all of you helping me out. WHEW! I feel glad this is out of the way, but still patiently waiting for my exam score. I need a 70 percent to just pass, but the higher the score, the more chance I have to getting in to Cal State. I don't have much more to say, except GOOD LUCK and keep up the posts! This is what worked for me!
Oh one more thing, The science question I thought was incorrect had two of the answers the EXACT same answers. C and D were worded the exact same. MUST HAVE BEEN A MISTAKE. That really upsets me becuz this science portion was very hard, but not hard where you had to calculate or anything, just random STUFF all over the place. THE ATI study manual was great though, even for science. I found about 10 questions from the TEAS exam itself right from the study manual from ATI.
Aquizzle,Do you remember what version did you take? Where did you take the test? i checked the teas web, they hv a new V version. The V vesion online has 150 qs compared to the 3.0 version just has 100 qs.
I just purchased McGraw book 2 days ago. thanks for you offer. Which section in this book that i should focus on. Thanks:bow:
so is the McGraw book good enough to use? i found it as an ebook(NETLIBRARY.COM) online from my school's library. i'm trying to avoid paying for a manual since i'll be paying for the ati online practice test.

Are you taking the TEAS or NET exam? If you are taking the TEAS, I would strongly recommend buying the ATI book. I wish I could help you out, but that is your best bet for sure. I have the McGraw Hill book, too. It works well for science and science only. Still, the ATI book covers alot of what you need to pass the exam. I promise!

I agree with Kelli. I would use McGraw for science only and the ATI book for other stuff. But if you just get the online assessment and focus on studying the parts you got wrong, you can google the topics and find elementary explanations. And do all the practice tests in the McGraw book for your weak sections. That's basically what I did. I used the online assessment and googled info i didn't know for science and math. I didn't have time to buy the ATI book before the test. You can also study the rationales from the online assessment to get a better idea of how you should be thinking.

Very good assessment aquizzle. That is exactly what I did. I used the McGraw book for the science and I studied the exams at the end of each section of the science and and the end of the book! If you don't have a chance for the ATI book, then don't worry about it. My friend's friend didn't even study and she got an 82 percent! WOW! So no worries, alot of the stuff is common knowledge. Study the science for sure though becuz that was the most difficult for me. I am hoping to just pass the science section! I HOPE!

Dont worry about the ATI BOOK. It is no biggie. I promise. Have you taken a test like the ACT before? The teas is similar to a standardized exam. You are not supposed to get everything correct, I promise. You are not supposed to know exactly how everything works. Although, I would encourage you to totally use the posts on allnurses. That was the best bet for me. I got an exam similar to another girl on here who posted! And just like my friend who took her's last saturday! We had the same exact questions and our exams were different, meaning hers was on the computer and mine was a scantron! WOW! It pays to pay attention to these posts becuz they are worth it! Also, the MCGRAW HILL BOOK is awesome! They go in depth for people that don't know anything. So if you are really on the basic level of learning new stuff, that is a great book, just like ATI's book. Also, for the MCGRAW book, you can step it up a notch anytime and start timing yourself to see how you are doing, etc. I did that as well. Time was of no matter on test day! The only part I didn't get to review was the math section. But, I am pretty sure I calculated everything appropriately. I am hoping so, at least. I will know my score on Monday. WHEW, can't hardly wait!
