Tattoo's on Nurses

Published

Hi all!

Finals are over and I can breathe again! Yipee!

I have a question. I have 4 tattoo's any of which could possibly show in scrubs. None of which would show fully.

1 is on the back of my neck and I have long hair, but even with my hair pulled up my shirt covers most of it.

The other 3 are on my upper arm area where my sleeve would cover it unless my sleeves came all the way up like a tank top almost. Like, if I wear a top with cap sleeves you can see a little of it.

The one on my neck is a sun, moon and stars.

The ones on my arm are 3 Kanji symbols.

So, finally, here's my question, is this something that a hospital will flat out not hire a nurse over?

In all my hospital stays I've never seen a nurse with a visible tattoo, or at least never noticed it.

Does anyone have any experience with it?

Thanks!

are there any nurses out there that have sleeves or other large tattoos that are visible to patients and coworkers and the hospital is ok with? or do you guys just cover up before working?

maybe somebody in a administrative power of a hospital can answer to this, i am curious to know what the employers of nurses feel about this.

I have two full sleeves and a chest piece, both of which I will have to cover with long sleeves and a turtle neck for school. Absurd really, but it is what it is.

Does this apply to employment as well? That I don't know. I would imagine that it depends on the hospital, as I'm sure every one is different.

As tattoos are becoming more accepted these days, i would assume a hospital would be lenient enough to at least tell the person to cover up rather than firing or not hiring someone due to their appearances.

Oh good! When the time comes where tattoos are more acceptable, I can't wait to get my hands done! :D

haha ditto on that, i also hope to get my neck tattoo(s) when i am a lil older.

I have one on my lower back that I guess is referred to as a 'tramp-stamp' as well, but I wanted it there so I could cover it up in my everyday clothes. The only time is shows is in a swimming suit. Our facility doesn't seem to be too strict on tat's, but then again I have a hard time finding anyone who has a visible one. We are not allowed any visible piercings except our ears.

Im thinking of have a tattoo on my right wrist, its just a name in arabic, but it means alot to me, im going to uni in Sept to do my first year of nursing and then hopefully onto Midwifery. Do you think this tattoo will sto me achieveing my dream job?

When I did my CNA clinicals at the nursing home, nearly all the aides and nurses had tattoos. To my surprise, so did plenty of the residents. One elderly lady even had multiple ear piercings and a labial ring! When I started work, my administrator had a tongue stud. The other aides and I talked about how care of piercings should be added to what we learn, since more and more people would be coming into the nursing homes with them. Times they are a-changing. :D

i am a level 2 traditional program nursing student in michigan state, i got 1 full sleeve, 1 half sleeve(full forearm, 6 kanji tattos on the upper arm), my back of neck/treps is fully tattooed, both of my lower legs are tattooed with big kanjis; i am going to get my full neck tattoo this spring break. you will be fine compare to me, ha ha, does this encourage you?? all my tattoos are polynesian tribal and chinese kanjis, artistic. dont get offensive tattoos thats a key. i am not allowed to show my tattoos in the clinical, i wear turtle neck and long sleeve shirts under my scrub... also i see so many staff nurses with big big visible tats.

you be fine, as long as you are competent as a nurse. but am i gonna be fine?????????????????

I do have a 3/4 sleeve that I do cover with an undershirt out of respect for my patients. I don't think I'd be fired for having tats but I want to be seen as a professional at work without the stigma attached. I have many tattoos but none that are visible in scrubs.

I'm in the process of getting the words DEAD SOUL removed from my fingers. Didn't matter as an EMT - but something tells me in patients wouldn't want to see that when I'm performing care ;)

I would say best word of advice is to cover them for your interviews, so you look as polished and professional as you can. Once you are hired they can't legally fire you for having tattoos. It is now considered to be part of a culture and to fire you for such could be brought up as discrimination.

Just dress professionally and if you are that worried about it you can modify your scrubs. I have a half sleeve to my elbow and during my degree had scrubs with extended sleeves. The school was across the board against visible tattoos but the hospital infection control made issue of wearing long sleeves.
