Tattoo's on Nurses

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hi all!

Finals are over and I can breathe again! Yipee!

I have a question. I have 4 tattoo's any of which could possibly show in scrubs. None of which would show fully.

1 is on the back of my neck and I have long hair, but even with my hair pulled up my shirt covers most of it.

The other 3 are on my upper arm area where my sleeve would cover it unless my sleeves came all the way up like a tank top almost. Like, if I wear a top with cap sleeves you can see a little of it.

The one on my neck is a sun, moon and stars.

The ones on my arm are 3 Kanji symbols.

So, finally, here's my question, is this something that a hospital will flat out not hire a nurse over?

In all my hospital stays I've never seen a nurse with a visible tattoo, or at least never noticed it.

Does anyone have any experience with it?

Thanks!

hospital I work in does NOT allow piercings in the nose. Ears if one or two is fine. Sadly they are viewed differently now...the profession is going down the drain...If the nurse taking care of me came in with a nose ring..hahaha. I would be complaining to the CEO of that hospital. And you know what...It would NOT be OK with the CEO either. Very unprofessional. Go ahead, wear that during your interview..haha...

Well, maybe you should have chosen to be a tattoo artist...instead of an RN...My daughter came home at age 18 with a tongue stud. She had asked at 16 to have one and I refused to allow it. Told her if she got it I would hold her down and pull it out...So, she waited until she was 18...haha. After about 4 months...her teeth got chipped and she took it out...Just what I told her would happen...But moms never know......haha. Glad you would rather have a job than a tongue ring...YOU, have grown up..unlike the other poster...

You are absolutely ridiculous. First of all, please give me a SPECIFIC example of how a nose ring would affect a nurses skills? If YOU came in to take care of me, with all your ridiculous beliefs & generalizations, I'D complain to a CEO about YOU! (I have no piercings btw)

And as for the tattoos. I have many, all able to be covered.

. Do you judge your patients the same way when they come in with tattoos or piercings ?

If I came into the hospital I would be much more concerned that my nurse was competent than whether they had any body modification.

You can't equate tattoos and piercings with drug use.

I HAD a nose piercing until I got bopped on the nose, the stem cut the membrane of my nose; it bled a lot and became badly infected very quickly; the infection spread to my orbital region and the entire right side of my face. Have not worn it since.

Nose piercings are cute and infections may not happen often, but when they do, they can end up severe.

There are patients who move erratically and I always worry about my co-workers who have a nose piercing who help calm these patients.

I used to think tattoos were unacceptable in the work place, but I've changed my tune because so many people have them and they are permanent; unlike piercings. I still don't like them, but as long as they're not sexual or related to death in a grotesque way, then they should not have to be covered.

Not a fan of piercings other than in the ears. To me, it appears very unsanitary JIMHO.

I am a fan of good tattooing. I don't have any tattoos, but always thought if I hit the lottery and had the cash to pay for a most excellent artist, I'd be inclined to get someting that ran organically from the shoulder or bicep area down to my wrist on one arm only - something serpentine, and not necessaerily a snake, could be vines or something mysterious. I do know I'd want it to be very colorful.
