Hello to everyone! I'm brand new to this site, but already finding lots of great information. Are any of you familiar with or applying to Tarrant County College ASN program? I'm in the dreaded wait until the first part of May. I took my TEAS exam last weekend and did really well so I'm hoping for the best! I look forward to getting to know each of you better.
I am being pinned tomorrow night at TCC and graduating on Friday! It was the toughest two years of my life, but I did it! TCC is a great program and all I ever heard from nurses during my clinicals is how much they love TCC students because they were much more eager to "do" rather than "observe." While both UTA and TWU are fine colleges, it seems the BSN programs put more emphasis on management whereas TCC students get more clinical exposure and are allowed to do more things. In my five semesters (summer Psych), I was in five different hospitals, and everyone agreed that TCC students are better prepared for the clinical setting upon graduation. With that many nurses already out there all saying the same thing, there must be some truth to it.I'm also proud to announce that my daughter will be starting in the fall!
I'm proud of you for your accomplishment, but please don't carry your misperceptions about BSN programs into the workplace.
When I graduated from UTA ten years ago we spent 12 WEEKS, two times a week in critical care areas at hospitals like BUMC working with heart transplant and liver transplant patients. Students at TCC ROTATED THROUGH critical care areas for a few days. So please don't go on about management. It was a one semester class. Our students had whole semester electives open to them like Emergency/Trauma (I spent 300 hours one summer at JPS in the ER) or Neonatal/ICU. We spend one freaking class on management and suddenly everyone thinks we are all focused on management. I don't have enough eyerolls for this post.
I will agree that there are sometimes students (in ANY program) who don't put anything into their education and who get an even smaller amount out it. But please wipe your smugness off your face before you enter the workplace.
I knew there was a reason I never posted on bulletin boards. No one can hear your tone of voice or see the expressions on your face.
I never made my post with any degree of smugness and anyone who knows me will tell you that smugness is something that has never been used to describe me. I was really just replying to some of the assorted posts already in this thread about the quality of TCC. The comments I made regarding the BSN program were not meant to sound like I thought I was better than that. They were based on things I had heard and I was simply repeating them. I work with both BSN and ADN nurses and they are all just great. I personally plan to do the bridge program at UTA in a couple of years. I went to TCC not because I thought it was "better" but because I was approaching 40 and it was quicker and cheaper. It was a better fit for me at this late point in my life.
From the tone of your post, it would seem I owe UTA students an apology. If so, I apologize for how my post may have sounded.

After I posted, I realized I *was* in a TCC string of posts so I am in the wrong there. You did come across as very smug. You are probably a wonderful student and will make a great nurse. The comments you heard from the staff should be taken more as a compliment to you in general and not as a kudos to the whole school. I'm sure there are a few in your class who will be barely getting by...just as there are some at UTA.
I get tired of the whole ADN/BSN debate....especially when one side hasn't taken the time to actually examine the course load and credits of the other, know what I mean.
You don't owe anyone an apology. But just make sure you understand where everyone is coming from and you have examined all of the facts.
I just had to bring this post back one more time to say how proud I am of myself for making it through summer microbiology!!! :)It was a very tough five weeks but I somehow managed to make it out with an A.
Katy - you were right, Mr. Matthai is a riot. Brealynn - I'd love to hear all about how you're getting ready for the fall if you have a chance.
I've applied to UTA and should hear something from their "first cut" in Septmeber. I will go ahead and apply to TCC again just to be safe.
Congratulations, Mom! I took Matthai's Micro class 3 summers ago and he was excellent.
I just transferred from El Centro College to Tarrant County College's nursing program and will start with Psych on Tuesday.
Is there anyone out there who will be taking "Adult" in the fall with me? If so, I'd love to chat with you. You can send me a PM.

Congratulations on your A!! That's awesome!! Yeah, he's a kick. He thinks he's a real comedian. LOL!! I get a kick out of people who love their own jokes, especially as much as he does. He's great!! I'm glad you enjoyed his class. When will you hear from UTA? I hope it's soon. I'm so glad to hear from you!! I think about you often. Thanks for posting an update. Take care.
Love,
Katy

I'm starting psych tomorrow too!! We'll all be together for the first three days. If you want, pm me and we can exchange info. Unfortunately, I'm going into OB/Pedi in the fall but I'd be glad to give you a heads up on Adult. Welcome to TCC!!!

Katy - thanks for asking about me. From what I understand UTA will send out letters to their top 200 in September (applications were due June 1st). From their those individuals are interviewed and asked to submit a writing sample. I think the final notification letters go out late October. I will go ahead and apply to TCC again for the spring just to be on the safe side. I've never heard a word from the alternate list.
Twinpumpkin - congrats on getting into the program! You should definitely be very proud of yourself!!!

Do you mind if I ask why you transferred from El Centro to TCC?
do you mind if i ask why you transferred from el centro to tcc?
it's a long story. basically, the el centro program is an integrated program and tcc is a block program. what that means is el centro mixes topics together and tcc divides them up.
for example:
at ecc during my ob/pedi semester, we had ob/pedi lecture all semester but clinicals were: ob - 1 day; pedi - 1 day; nursery/nicu - 1 day; postpartum - 1 day. if there was no lady partsl delivery the day you had ob/l+d clinical, you just didn't get to see one. the rest of the semester we did med/surg clinicals! why you would do that is beyond me.
at tcc during the ob/pedi semester you have 8 weeks of ob lecture with 8 weeks of ob clinical followed by 8 weeks of pedi lecture with 8 weeks of pedi clinical. you get to actually see what you are studying at the time.
same for med/surg: when you study respiratory you get respiratory patients at tcc; whereas at ecc you get whichever patient is available even if you know nothing about their disease process(es).
other reasons: the faculty; location (tcc is closer to my house); reputation of school's program.
i have been in class at tcc now for only 2 days but it's like night and day compared to el centro. i really love it!
i don't mean to scare you away from el centro if you're thinking about going or already go there. some people like it but none that i know.
you can send me a pm if you want more info.
