Talky Nurse

Why does working with a talky Nurse wear me out? I am sure some patients enjoy the conversation, but I find quietness acceptable. Why does the talky Nurse have to fill every second with non stop chatter? Is there no self control?

Perhaps the "talky" nurse finds your lack of conversation to be unnerving.

We all have our own personalities and ways of interacting. Tolerance of others' qualities makes for great teamwork.

Some would call it "the gift of gab." They can't talk to anybody and everything, whether people are listening or not. To get a word in you may have to talk louder and look them in the eye when you do it.

I completely agree with this. However, I can also empathize w/ the OP. I can chat it up w/ the best of them but when I am busy and trying to get my charting done I find conversation very distracting. To avoid the distraction, I wheel my computer to the end of the hall I'm assigned to and pull a chair out of a room and sit there and chart. If people comment on my self isolation, I tell them I want to keep an ear out for my patients (true). It also helps me get to the call bells quicker.

When I am done w/ my charting I am more than happy to participate in the chit chat. It helps those long night shifts pass a little more quickly.

Off topic, but what distracts me even more than chit chat are the people who hammer on the keyboard like they are trying to kill it. DRIVES.ME.INSANE.! I have to self isolate for that one, too.

Even if I do have something to say I can't get a word in edgewise.....

I can't even think straight when we're stuck in office together!

I have worked with nurses who have to say every thought that runs through their head. Usually it is a symptom of a psychiatric problem. You don't have to be a captive audience or listen to the same story 5 times.

Do not feed into the grandiosity but do have a some compassion for this nurse who is struggling to function. Just say can we talk later, I need to get my charting done.

Maggie you hit it on the head. I will definitely take your advice. Thank you.

Some people are hyper-talkative to the point that they don't seem to pick up subtle social cues, such as the yawns and overall disinterest of listeners.

I'd rather deal with a quiet introvert than a coworker who's got verbal diarrhea.

I get really drained by chatty people in all aspects of my life. I like modest to moderate conversation.

I work with a talky nurse as well. When she's distracting me I ask her for help with something. This seems to do the trick because then she gets distracted with the task:) I really don't know how she finishes everything and still finds time to chat:)
