Taking a sick day after giving notice

Hello there, I have a question. I gave notice to my current position a week or so ago, and I gave 4 weeks notice l together. I am actually sick tonight with a fever and I vomited twice. I feel horrible. My concern is calling in sick after I've given notice. I am in good standing at the hospital and with my unit and supervisors. I was asked to stay on per diem as well. I am also concerned bc I am not sure if the hospital will refuse to pay me out on my pto if I call in. But I am legitimately sick. I can't even peel myself out of bed. I would prob only need one day because I have a few days off in between my next shift. Does anyone have any input about this? Thank you I'm advance.

Honestly, the best source for your answer is your HR department, since it's your facility's policy that governs this.

In most of the places I've worked, I was not allowed to use PTO during my notice--if I had to take a day off, it would be unpaid.

Hope you feel better soon!

With my employer, I've seen nurses call off with pay, during their notice time. It may depend on your employer.

Thanks for responding. I do not at all care about getting paid for the day. That's not important at all. I can't go in vomiting with a fever, that's my only concern. I appreciate you answering my post!

If you're vomiting, febrile, and can't peel yourself out of bed...does it matter what the PTO policy is?? You need to stay home--for the sake of yourself, your colleagues, and your pts.

Feel better soon!!

Perhaps you can tack on whatever days you miss onto the end of your notice? Or at least offer?

If you were always reliable it would be unfortunate if people weren't understanding. I'm surprised some said they couldn't use their PTO because doesn't that get paid out when you leave anyway?

This would be my suggestion as I have done this. I offered to do an extra weekend day for them - they jumped at the idea.

hello, i came upon this post, and have a very similar issue. I would like to know if possible, what was the result of your issue. You called out because you were legit sick, did they end up paying you all your PTO ?

You should do as the OP was advised to do. Check with your HR department. Whether she got paid or didn't has no bearing on your own facility's policies.

You need to check your facility's HR policy. I have worked somewhere that stated that during your notice period you couldn't not take leave of any kind. I don't know if this included sick leave but I wouldn't think so. I do know that as an employee in good standing HR waived this rule for me so it seems to me that the answer is not always black and white.

In your first post, you specifically said that you were concerned that the hospital would refuse to pay you for that sick day. That's why people responded the way they did.

ETA, except that this post is two years old and you likely no longer care. Gah, I hate zombie threads.
