Takin' classes ...

I will be starting my pre-nursing next Semester (Spring '07), already registered for my classes. Out of curiousity, how many classes do you take per semester or do you think are doable?

It all depends on what else is going on in your life.

Some people have full time jobs and family and other stressors on top of school.

I have taken more at times and I have taken less depending on what happened in my life at any given time. All I can say is be prepared to spend much more time on your 4 credit hour science classes than on your basic 3 credit hour classes. Time management and multitasking skill is EVERYTHING. Good luck

I am doing really well even though I have three small kids also. Having a very supportive husband helps as well. I think it all depends on how motivated and desciplined you are. Some subjects come alot easier to some than others so A&P could be tough for you and it may come easy. Though it is my toughest class. I think if you put your mind to it you can handle any class load. Just depends on how much time you want to spend.

I'm currently taking Psych 101 and Microbiology. I thought this would be a piece of cake, but the work required for Micro has been shocking. I work fulltime which equals 60+ hours a week including commute and have DH and DD10 at home. There simply aren't enough hours in the day, but I'm learning a bit about time management and that small bits of studying add up to enough.

If you've been out of school for awhile I strongly suggest you brush up on your study skills. I've been out of high school for 20 years and knowing how to make the best use of my study time has been my single biggest problem.

While working, I have taken two classes/semester, always one lab science with one other class (government, soci, etc.). Depending on your schedule and how many prereqs your program requires, try to space out your sciences and not take more than one/semester unless absolutely necessary. Make sure you read up on all the courses you will have to take, and see if any are prereqs for each other too. You may have to take chem and/or micro before A&P, for example. Good luck!

I too am starting in January. I won't be working so I will start off with two or three depending on which courses I am taking. I will probably do microbiology and inorganic chemistry, then organic chem (or whichever comes 1st) and A&P. I am little apprehensive but can't wait to get started. I also need to take the GRE this year before applying to nursing school.

If I were you I'd take my chemistry classes before taking the Microbiology class....just a suggestion because a great part of the micro lab was about biochemichal reactions.

Yes, I did of course plan out a schedule that will work with my family. I have two kids and one on the way. I made sure that I can take my kids to Day Care and school before I commute to school, and that I will be able to pick them up after school/Day Care, which I know won't happen all the time. But then there is Daddy, right *hehe* :). He is very supportive!!!

Wow, that's a load. Remember you need to have competitive grades ( no lower than B, A is always better) in all of those to get into nursing school. Good luck!

Many of my credits from my BA carried over, so I only have to take A&P I & II, & Microbiology but since one is a pre-req for another, I will only be taking one class a semester. I have a 14 month old and a 14 year old and a DH who is a NYC firefighter. I wish everyone success on their new career path:)

good luck to you even one at a time with a busy schedule at home its a full load! you will enjoy it more though if your not cramming it all in, I have really enjoyed my AP 101 class I actually look forward to going to school on the weekend. Chemistry was a little different but I am nearly done now )

I've started off by taking one class at a time, on-line.

I'm getting ready for my Final in Algebra & have been happy with the on-line class.

I do believe I could have handled one other class....But I just didn't want to overwhelm myself right off the bat!

I work 50+ hours a week at my in-home daycare. I have a 6 year old who just started school this year & a 2 year old at home and like Mom2J&B, my husband is also a firefighter. Plus he has his own business he operates on his days off.

We have a lot to juggle...but I know there are people who juggle alot more.

My next class will be Intermediate Algebra & I'm going to take it on-line. I'm taking things slow due to the fact that my goal is to get into Nursing School when my 2 year old starts Kindergarten.

I agree with the others. It depends on what you have going on at home. Also if you have been out of school, for a while, I'd take it slow at first, to see how you adjust to school, it's better to go slower and get all A's than overwhelm yourself and end up with lower grades in everything. I just stated my pre-reques this past fall. I started with English comp., Bio w/Lab, and Psyc. At first I was like "oh this is easy I could have easly had a few more classes", but now with only 3 weeks left I'm glad I didn't. With finals, and papers comming due, it's a little stressful right now. That's another thing to consider, I had a paper due in English about every other week. Not hard, but time consuming. Good luck!
