There probably aren't too many of us Vermonters here on AllNurses, given the overall population of the State. Still, it's good to have our own special forum.

I'm wondering about working at FAHC. Anyone out there have opinions on the work environment there? (You can PM if you prefer not to post publicly.)

Thanks.

M.

Believe it or not, I actually am looking for some relocation information. I'm currently in my junior year of my BSN in Tennessee and plan to move to VT after graduation in 2005. Any suggestions on the best places to live/work? Thanks!!!

Hello maybe my post was not clear. I am looking for relocation info not offering it. All I've been able to find out on other chat boards is: in the icu triples aren't uncommon but the people and locations are great, especially in the winter (but I suppose it may be different from a tennessee winter.) Small population too. Good luck. if you've got anything interesting to add please pass it on.

I spent a good 12 years in Northwest Vermont. Could tell you a little about it. What do you want to know?

Vermont only has a few hospitals, NMC, FAHC, Rutland, Central Vermont, Copley, am I missing any? There are a lot of PH nursing agencies.

Did you like living there? How were the working conditions? Where did you work at while you were there? I've been looking into the Rutland and Burlington areas. Does anyone know anything about either? Thanks!!!!

Hey! I am a Vermont native, who moved away for over 10 years-England, Arizona, California-and then moved back a bit over two years ago. I do not work in the nursing field-yet-but I can tell you that Burlington is a very cool, laid-back place to live as a 30 something. People here are very real, which was a change from some of the other areas I have lived in. PM me if you want any specifics about living here.

Hello,

I am relocating to Bennington in June. I currently work as an ICU nurse in Pgh, PA. Do you have any suggestions as to where I can apply for a job. My husband will by working at Southwest Medical Center, but I haven't had any luck finding a position there in the ICU. Any info?

Bev

Welcome to Bennington and SVMC. I live in Hoosick Falls, just across the border in NY and have worked twice in SVMC [it was called Putnam Memorial then]. Right now I am in LTC. It seems that you could get an ICU job there. What about the ER? Of course if Evening Supervisor looks OK, I see an ad for that. Have you checked out North Adams in Mass? It is pretty close. Otherwise it is Albany where you could just clean up with that speciality, especially in the Nursing Agencies. It depends where you are going to live.

For me Albany is a possibility. Here it pays to have licences in many states since NY, VT, Mass are so close. Good luck!!

Hey Vermonster! I'm thinking about applying to nursing school in Vermont. Do you know how the nursing schools are there? Are they difficult to get into? Are there a ton of people applying to them like here on the West Coast where there are just hundreds and hundreds of people applying and it's nealy impossible to get in? What is the cost of living like there?

I am originally from Maryland but I live out in Oregon now. My mom was a camp nurse at a camp in Vermont so I spent a few summers up there as a kid and I remember loving it. So, I've always had Vermont in the back of my mind as a place I'd want to live.

I did research University of Vermont and it seems pretty expensive but I think there's another nursing school-Southern Vermont College maybe ?

VTC has a LPN program in Brattleboro- and has an RN program at its main campus.

NH Tech in Claremont is just across the state line- they have LPN ADN, and BSN programs

UVM is a 4 year program- has mostly fresh out of highschool enrollment, most tech colleges have a higher ratio of "older" students.

There are many more hospitals in VT than was listed above, also if you live in the mid part of the state, DHMC is just across the state line in NH. DHMC also has Cheshire Medical Center, just over the MASS and VT boarders in NH, Springfield, Brattleboro, they have hospitals, there is a VA hospital in White River Junction..

Cost of living is pretty low, but property taxes are high, fuel oil for heat is high, and pay isnt the highest...
