Supposed to register for classes tomorrow... BUT they are already FULL!!!

Published

I am so upset... the classes I want to register for are already full!!!!

I know I could show up to class on the day of the class and request to be added, but I have never had to do this before...

Has a professor ever turned anyone away if they request to add after the class has been filled? I already have all my Gen Ed classes done, and everything else I need except nursing pre-reqs... and I have to take them in a certain order (due to being pre-reqs themselves for other classes)... ugh.

I am kinda down because class doesn't start until January... so I have to wait for two more months before I can even find out if I can get into the classes... I am bummed out!!!

Anyone else had this happen to them?? What was your situation?

professors always refuse students. you should email the prof. and show up on the first day early. at my school, seniors get priority then juniors, etc. or if you have some circumstance that breaks the prof's heart. it's their decision ultimately so just make them feel bad and let them know your situation :) hopefully your school is not as bad as mine right now! i had at LEAST 50 people trying to add in each of my classes but at my previous college i got in every single time i crashed so i guess it really depends on your school but good luck!

Just keep pursing a spot, most people drop at the beginning of the quarter. I wanted to get into this one class pretty badly, and I just kept checking for seats every day until the start of the quarter. If you can't get in, maybe take the time to augment your resume before you apply to nursing school. Do you have your CNA? Do you have volunteer experience? Try to network and establish a rapport with nurses, especially the ones in management. That way, you'll be able to call upon people to write you a stellar letter of recommendation.

Good luck!

My boss is the director of nursing at a surgical facility...It has nothing to do with any of that.

Besides... I just found out from the department heads of the classes that I just need to arrive on the first day, and they will allow me to add the class. They don't have wait lists, so that's just the way it's done.

There are NO other available classes that I can take. And if there were, they are all day time. I am the only income right now in a family of 3 so there is no way I am able to change my schedule at this time. Nursing school will be different, because I will be living on student loans and working nights as an EMT.

My BF was able to register for the classes first because he has credits and was able to get in... so I am just going to go to class with him. He's also pursuing an EMT certification (although mine is just a re-cert... I have experience as an EMT already), and the Chem class, we both need. I need it for nursing and he needs it for Paramedic school.

Thanks anyways. I guess our colleges here are a little bit less strict.

Hmm, it does sound like they're less strict. For my classes, it really depends on three things: how nice the prof is, how big the classroom is, and whether its a lab. Now, the niceness of the professor is self-explanatory, but I found that if the classroom will hold more people than the admins in registration thought it could then the prof will let extras in. However, if it is a lab then the prof can only let in as many students as there is room for in the lab. I once had a microbiology class that only had room for 30 students, and about 60 people showed up the first day of class. The prof said "If you aren't registered, then leave. I won't be letting in any more people" and that was that. Sad, yes, but it was already crammed to the walls with 30, I can't even imagine twice that many...

The same thing happened to me a few times and here's how I managed to get in.

Go to the department chairperson and ask to be let in. Go back again if you get a NO the first time. Be persistent.

If that doesn't work, and if your college allows you to register online, check that class repeatedly and see if a seat opens up.

Check repeatedly whenever you're near your computer. Especially check the day tuition bills go out and for a week after that.

My college automatically de-registers people if their bills aren't paid.

See if there is an online class you can take until a seats opens up.

If you have any college credits from another college, transfer them to get a higher registration priority.

Good luck!

For me, I was closed out of A&P 1, and I emailed the Biology Department Chairperson to allow me to get into the class. I even showed up on the first day of class (which was completely packed). He refused to write me an override. It didn't matter, end of story. I even showed up at his office to plead and beg, but he happened to have left earlier in the day, so I missed him. But, things happen for a reason, because I had a pleasant conversation with his secretary who told me he has never written an override for anybody, but she reassured me that I wasn't out of luck...

She said I could look for another college who offers A&P and take it over there. All I would need permission from the director of Registration to give me a signed form that says I don't have to pay out of county fees because I got closed out of the class here. I got the class at the other college and I'm getting an A for the course! The grade I got from the other college will be converted back to my original college as if I took it there all along. Glad it worked out good for me.

Whats so frustrating about this is by the middle of the semester the class is almost half empty.I know in my anatomy class people were turned away but in the middle of the semester almost half of them had dropped. Good luck, I hope u get in. It seems like everybody is going back to school in this bad economy. I have never seen it like this before. At my CSU last quarter some people had to drop the whole quarter because they werent able to get any classes.

I have noticed in more than one case, that the instructor gave preferential treatment to students who emailed or called them ahead of time and pleaded their case. That might work for you. Since you already have everything done and you need the classes, that would be a good thing to tell the instructor in your email. If it puts you ahead of one prospective student on the first day of class, good. You might be able to add the class. Good luck.

I absolutely agree with you. Everyone is going back to school.

I tried adding anatomy last semester and there were 60 people crushing the class. I've NEVER seen anything like this. It was so sad.

i think you should go prior to the start of the term & talk to the professors.let them know you really want to be in their class.

Yeah, ours are about half-full right now and I don't register until tomorrow morning, ulp! But we have a provision here that if you get in to a lab, you can get in to whatever lecture you choose. So I'm shooting for my lab.

Also, if you don't get in, but you show up the first week of class, the professor drops the no-shows and "lotteries off" the open spaces.
