SUNY-Stony Brook ABSN Class of 2020

I looked around hoping to find a thread but only found previous years. I applied early September for the program and have seen been playing the waiting game. I'd like to hear from others who applied, maybe I can help answer some questions and we can all offer each other support.

Yes for the people who have gotten an interview can you post your gpa/ prereq gpa and all that stuff? So nervous. I submitted it October 3rd

My undergraduate gpa from 8 years ago was a 3.42. My science prerequisites was a 3.94. I think a lot of it has to do with your essay and recommendations though. I submitted the maximum 6 recommendations. I have no healthcare experience. I have been working in finance for the past 8 years. I wouldn't lose hope guys. I have heard they send out emails in waves. Maybe they'll send out another round this Friday!

Hey guys, I graduated from this program in May. Let me know if I can help anyone! Good luck, it's worth the wait I promise.

Hi @EileenC! Thank you for taking the time to help. Would you mind sharing your experience in the program? How intense are the 12 months? Did you find it got easier, or the workload lighter, towards the end of the program?

Hi @EileenC I had a question. I know they say you don't have much of a life during the program which is very understandable but do you know if clinical days are flexible? Like if someone had a wedding to go to one weekend? Thank you!!

It is very intense I'm not gonna lie. The summer is the worst semester with getting used to the program itself plus the 21 credits you're taking in 10 weeks. I wouldn't say it got easier or lighter as it went on but you get used to it, I promise. Good advice our professors give us is take it "one day at a time." It's doable but it's a lot and then it's over! It goes so fast, sometimes I wish I was still in school!

Hi! Clinical days are not flexible, you get assigned one day of the week in the summer for clinical and that is your group, your shift your day. In the fall & spring it's two days a week. They make some exceptions for make up days if you're sick or for family reasons (for instance, a death in the family) but they really don't like you to miss clinical. This is because the number of hours you complete in clinical is required for graduation from the program. You would have to talk to your clinical instructor and the course professor to see if they thought you could miss and make up.

But honestly, it's worth it to put your entire life on hold for a year and trust me the people around you will understand! I know it sounds crazy but you won't succeed if you're juggling other obligations, it's just too much work and an entire weekend is A LOT of study time to give up trust me.

Hi Eileen,

I was wondering if you know how often waves of email interviews get sent out? The first wave was sent this past Friday I believe, I've been checking my e-mail but still nothing yet. Also, how was your interview? Is there anything you did to prepare? Thank you!

I'm not sure specifically how often they sent the emails out. If you scroll through some old threads that might be a better indicator. But if the last wave was just on Friday and they haven't interviewed anyone yet (I think I saw someone say the first available date was October 29th) I would think that it would be a week or two until they send more interviews. If it helps, the faculty that interviews you guys are the same faculty that teaches both the accelerated students and both years of the basic students. So they have to schedule things to fit around everyone! They also interview everyone who was selected for any interview before they make decisions. The professors make recommendations to the dean of the nursing school and she has the final decision.

In hindsight I loved my interview, when it was happening I was a nervous wreck! But the two professors who interviewed me ended up being my favorite professors. They really try to make you comfortable, they're not trying to trick you or make you feel that you're not good enough.

They conduct interviews in groups of 5 or so. Two professors usually and 4-5 of you. They ask you several questions and you take turns who answers first (they pick.) Afterwards you take a math test and do a very simple writing sample. The only thing I did to prepare was brush up on some math. It's simple math but you don't get a calculator. I would practice multiplying and dividing by hand, fractions to decimals and vice versa, adding and subtracting decimals and fractions.

Hi Eileen, do you remember what wave you got your email for the group interview-early, mid or late October? Any idea of how often they send out the invitations?

I got mine with the first wave. For timing I would look at some of the old threads! I know there were three waves but I'm not super sure of the timing and I don't want to mislead you guys!

@EileenC thanks so much for answering our questions, and congrats on getting through the program! Can you shed any light on your weekly schedule? You mentioned clinicals were 1 day per week throughout the summer, and then twice a week for the rest of the program. What hours were you in classes and clinicals? Is it 12 months straight through or is there a little break during the holidays/new year's?
